Never owned a GBA so I'm emulating this now and holy fuck it's actually excellent. I've only played one other handheld Zelda, ALBW, and personally I think this outshines it quite a bit.
Why does no one ever seem to discuss this in the pantheon of good Zelda games? Also, is ALBW perhaps a bit overrated?
>Why does no one ever seem to discuss this in the pantheon of good Zelda games?
Outshined by GB/C Zeldas.
>Also, is ALBW perhaps a bit overrated?
By who? Everyone agrees it's mediocre.
Elijah Thompson
I think it's the "worst" Zelda by a pretty large margin. Cool you're enjoying it, though, I sure had a hard time.
>mediocre I dunno, to me it's like the 3rd best Zelda.
Christopher Hernandez
>everyone agrees it's mediocre what, it's had great reviews by both critics and users, and for ages after it came out people on Sup Forums were saying it's the GOAT handheld Zelda
It's definitely a pretty "hard" game in comparison to most other zeldas, there's only a few moments where you actually know exactly where you're supposed to go, but I'm finding that pretty refreshing to be honest. It may be because I've just come off my first Souls playthrough so I'm used to what would usually frustrate me, but yeah definitely not the worst for me at all.
Tbh I'd say Zelda 1 or 2 would have to be the "worst" by default just because of how they've aged. I've never played 2 and only tried 1 for a bit but they just don't seem that enjoyable to me.
Ryder Jones
>I've never played 2 and only tried 1 for a bit but they just don't seem that enjoyable to me
That's what I thought until I actually sat down and played them. Zelda 1 hold up fantastically well, especially if you've just played a Souls game.
Zelda 2 is also a fantastic game in its own right. You just have to judge a game by the time it came out, and I know that shit's hard for a lor of people, but I LOVED both of the first Zeldas when I played them.
I've made a top list of all the Zeldas a while back but I can't find it for the life of me, otherwise I would've pasted it here.
Dominic Ortiz
>I think it's the "worst" Zelda by a pretty large margin. I do respect your opinion, but I will present mine which differs largely from yours. I believe that The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is the best game in the Legend of Zelda series, and that the worst game in the series is The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
Elijah Adams
Fair enough and a totally understandable opinion, I believe Phantom Hourglass is pretty far down on my list aswell, but higher than Spirit Tracks and somewhat on the same level as Oracles.
Lucas Ortiz
>I've only played one other handheld Zelda, ALBW
Holy fuck OP get your shit together. Minish Cap is amzing, but you really need to play LA and the Oracle games
Luis Butler
Huh, wouldn't have thought. Idk I just found 1 a bit TOO hard/convoluted. I think a big part of the problem was that I was trying to play it emulated on a smartphone. If I'd at least done it on a pc with some sort of controller in my hand, I'm sure I'd have had a better experience. I fully believe that it'd be interesting once you committed and got into it, a bit like Souls I guess.
Phantom Hourglass being low down is a pretty common opinion, but I've NEVER heard anyone rate MC that highly, any reasons why?
Yeah the Oracle games look great they're on my checklist. I think I have another Zelda sin that takes priority though I've never beaten OoT. I've never even gotten more than couple hours in.
Lucas Fisher
It's the best Zelda.
Julian James
That's pretty bad, but in a way I can also understand, especially if you're playing the 64 version in the more recent age.
Chase Myers
I plan on finally playing it through via Virtual Console on Wii U. I'm guessing the best possible emulation would be to play it through an actual nintendo product. I only know one guy who owns a 64 and he doesn't have OoT so playing it on the actual console is a no go
Oliver Reed
I really don't know. I found the game to have the right level of challenge The gameplay and puzzles were always fun and interesting I really liked the game's artstyle Ezlo was a cool companion
Brayden Hughes
Basically all the Zeldas are good games in their own right, to a certain extent.
Ocarina of Time is my personal favourite along with Wind Waker and ALBW, but you should totally play the ones you find interesting.
If you find OoT hard to get into I'd totally recommend you try the 3DS version instead. Both versions are good but the 3DS version is probably a better entry point since it improves much, specifically the frame rate.
Leo Martin
Because skyword sword exists. There's no need to talk about other good Zelda games.
Leo Rivera
I agree with you in regards how great Minish Cap is. The game is pretty short though in comparison to the other LoZs, so there really isn't much to discuss.
Noah Howard
I thought about borrowing the 3DS version but honestly the appeal of console>handheld would probably sway me enough to enjoy the console version more. Plus I'm generally ok with "dated" games so the remaster wouldn't mean much to me. Loved WW, definitely going to play OoT. ALBW was cool too but it just felt really shallow compared to other Zeldas for some reason. I didn't REALLY care, can't say why.
I think the challenge makes up for the overall length. Like even though it takes less time, I feel like I'm putting in the same amount of effort. Plus the side missions/kinstone stuff keeps me pretty occupied as well. It's a small overworld but it's dense, every few steps there's something to do or investigate
Joshua Anderson
>the remaster wouldn't mean much to me
Then go with the N64/Gamecube/Virtual Console version. I personally prefer that one but I've also played the game a gorillion times. It's a great game.
Aaron Flores
>NEVER heard anyone rate MC that highly, any reasons why? Fun gameplay Good objects. Tons of them are useful Entertaining story, villain and for once the comapnion is cool as fuck. The stones minigame is fun, and it gives you something to collect and put in treasure chests beyond rupies Good dungeon and enemy design Imo Capcom zelda>>>>>Nintendo Zelda. Capcom are amazing at gameplay, simple as that. The only nintendo-Zelda that I enjoyed as much as their game is link's awakening
>for ages after it came out people on Sup Forums were saying it's the GOAT handheld Zelda Who said that? It's probably one of the weakest 2D Zeldas ever made, barely superior to the DS ones. Weak dungeons, dumb gimmicks, easy as sin and it rides in the neonintendo "nostalgia for the past" trend.
Aiden James
Wind Waker is the best Zelda.
Easton Phillips
Second best in my opinion.
Lincoln Stewart
It was just all over Sup Forums, legitimate hype and adoration for the game
Just as an aside, Fallon confirmed (although we already knew it) to be a pleb, states LoZ is his fav game without specifying which one. Probably only played one and thinks it's the only one there is. Probably didn't clock it, either. youtu.be/kIdCaJdWsiY

Argument: Phantom Hourglass is better than Wind Waker.
Reason: Wind Waker had shit tier pacing, poor characterization that didn't develop far enough to be worth anything, dungeons were completely awful which was compounded by the fact that the overworld was basically just a hub world with travel time and like 3-4 islands apart from the temples out of dozens and dozens of islands that weren't worth ANYTHING, and finally everything in the game felt unfinished/incomplete and unpolished.
Further reasoning: Phantom Hourglass did not have these issues. It had an extremely ill-advised control scheme, and due to system limitations the graphical capabilities and music library were extremely limited, but the dungeons were decent to good, the puzzles had great variety, fewer islands meant what islands there were were more important and even often worth revisiting for secrets or collectibles, and over all the game had a great feeling of progression. Additionally, the boating was just significantly better. Faster, more complex paths, didn't have to constantly change the wind, touch screen aiming of the cannon felt good and responsive, treasure hunting was more involved (and more enjoyable) with better rewards overall, and you could actually fish.
I do believe that Minish Cap is better than Phantom Hourglass, considerably so, and would mark it as one of the best 2D Zeldas. It may not be as long as other games, and not everyone may like the kinstone system, but it allowed for a LOT of side quests, secrets and collectibles, plus world and dungeon design was top notch and had great pacing as well as variety. The combat system was fun once you started learning techniques, the characters were written well, the game had strong and consistent pacing throughout as well as phenomenal presentation, two unique and well-used gimmicks, and I thoroughly appreciate the variety and implementation of the tools as well as their consistent use.
Carter Johnson
I guess my only counter to this would be the "eye test"
While what you say on paper makes sense, and certainly seems to prove your point, it just doesn't feel like that when you actually play the game. When you play WW and then PH WW just feels more fun. Ihave no science for this
Ryder Russell
It is the exact opposite for me. Wind Waker was horrendously disappointing and the number of times that I actually enjoyed what was happening in game could probably be counted under ten. Meanwhile I thoroughly appreciated a lot of what Phantom Hourglass did, although the presentation and controls could have been significantly better.
I would be ecstatic as hell if they remade Phantom Hourglass for 3DS or Wii-U or NX with the option for movement at the bare minimum to be tied to analog/circlepad/d-pad, bumped up the graphical quality, and added new tracks for a lot of the game. More unique boss and dungeon music, minimum.
Jonathan Evans
last zelda i enjoyed enough to finish, but only just. after the series went 3d it just became terminally boring.
Lincoln Richardson
Damn man, I can't imagine how you could hate so many great games like that. Personally, I've never found a 3D zelda that wasn't an 8.5/10 or better
