Yeah there was a story and NPCs. It was turn based and grid based. You had stats and everything. Not a lot of quests that I can remember you mostly did fighting, conversations, and found passwords in terminals.

Fun fact: this game sucessfully combined Wolfenstein, Doom, and Commander Freaking Keen together as part of the same universe (we already knew of the Wolf3D-Keen connection but this game re-affirmed it).
BJ fights a summoned Demon, whose leg he severely damages, resulting in the first Cyberdemon (its leg is replaced), the same one featured in the original Doom as one of the commanders of Hell's armies. The Nazis started the cycle that led to Doom. As for the Commander Keen connection, BJ is Billy Blaze's grandpa.
