Why do all companies stop making good games once they go big?
Why do all companies stop making good games once they go big?
For example?
By good you mean what?
You mean games that don't cater to your individual taste right.
Squaresoft
Blizzard
Fromsoft
Paradox
I mean square and blizz were always big players, but you know what I mean.
>I liked them before they sold out and went commercial
You mean games that catter to so many people that they lose their original fun factor?
somewhat, but instead I'd say it was a personal touch that was lost
it becomes about profit and appealing to as many people as possible
Once you have shareholders the game changes entirely. It's no longer about the love for what you do or the passion for the platform. It's all about bottom lines and keeping the people funding you happy.
All that leads to sterilization of your product to meet the lowest common denominators and cutting as many corners as you can to save money and get the products out faster.
this so much.
Investors want security and predictability, not higher-quality products.
Profit-seeking is the way all industries go once they start growing.
This desu. A company that doesnt grow is a shit company.
And growing means mass appeal in videogames.
Which also means casualization, casual friendly games and incorporation of mass media shit, such as microtransactions, live action characters, simplified storylines, pop culture references, etc
i've been playing postal 2, turok, and serious sam. why were western games good and when did they go so wrong?
There's still good games out there.
You have to look for them though.
Studios a decade back were mid sized as opposed to the current state of things where they're too big for anyone to have any personal input.
To this day I blame the PS3 and Xbox 360 for the mass casualization of vidya.
-DLC became the norm
-cinematic experience over gameplay
-multiplayer focused games
-paid online became acceptable
-games became more easier and homogenized
In that generation alone, more game dev studios were closed down than in any previous generation.
Wasn't it Microsoft who jacked up their budgets or some shit and forced the competition to do the same or die out
this raises a good question as to which studio was the first one to go for the gargantuan budgets
was it EA that paved the way? I honestly have no idea
It may have been Rockstar since their games always had a massive marketing budget.
Because at that point they focus primary on sales, they try to follow trends and appeal to a broad a market as possible rather then what they as people enjoy. They try to spread the game as thin as possible to have something everyone can enjoy, but in the process it loses depth.
>this company is well known now so therefore they are bad and don't make me special for liking them anymore
I'd blame id or Ion storm. People like John Romero who acted like rock stars and demanded the same hollywood treatment for their games.
