9.7 million isn't unprecedented
It was free for everyone to play. Star Wars Battlefront also got nearly 10 million people in their open beta but nobody's even talking about it anymore.
Also, if you look at the average playtime and divide it up, the average concurrent players would be somewhere in between CSGO's and DOTA 2's. And this was when it was free.
It got some decent numbers, but nothing amazing, like when WoW beat the MMO genre to record of 200k subscribers by millions

HOTS is slowly dying
Hearthstone is their only successful game currently that is streamed almost as much as CS:GO and League. Really the only reason OW is beating any game in twitch is 1, first day release. 2. Big streamers were specifically paid by blizzard to stream this game. Similar to how OW has NO competitive scene or way to have a fair balanced competitive scene and apparently had teams like liquid and cloud9 recruting for the games. It's all just publicity to sell more, of course a game thats hyped is going to sell well into the millions but its the question of, what'll happen to make blizzard realize the game is no longer profitable.
In its current state it can only last a few months before players decline significantly and people just forget about it, theres no way they can keep adding heroes and maps and keep them balanced like what they do in HOTS. Blizzard has either set them selves up to get profit or to fail. Only time will truly tell with this title.
