Other than best level design, which belongs to Doom or Blood, this is the greatest FPS of all time. Imagine if the FPS genre had iterated on the standards set by this game, instead of following Call of Duty 4.

really sad that even 10 years after FEARs release no shooter is even trying to reach the same standards.
The spooky stuff in this game was retarded.
This. Fantastic gameplay, but the sections where you aren't shooting stuff aren't too great. Last 30 minutes was really cringe worthy.
Still worth playing tho
I found it pretty boring desu.
And all the guns except the pistol felt like shit, I don't know how the shotgun ended up with a good reputation.
Most overrated FPS game of all tiem behind halo
Boring ""horror"" game with terrible level design and competely linear corridors
Fear 2 is one of my favorite games of the last gen
The shotgun literally allows you blow people into clouds of red mist. It is also, unlike most games shotguns, effective at moderate ranges. Name one game that has a better shotgun.
Yeah I really wish the game took itself less seriously a funnier / less grounded game would have been better imo.
Quake's level design is leaps and bounds above Doom's. Don't know about Blood, I'm still holding out for a modern port, BloodXL or Blood EX, whatever comes first.
>terrible level design
Level design is more than just aesthetics
Although I thought the Alma stuff was ineffective I don't think a less serious tone would have benefited the game at all. The atmosphere of industrial decay was very effective, they should have just had the spooky stuff be more subtle, in the background.
The first Halo was a solid game. Can't blame it for the misguided attempts by the industry to copy it.
Will any FPS ever match Quake's sheer AESTHETICS. I loved that hyper gothic style. Now days every FPS seems to favor that boring, sleek Apple look.
I came in this thread to say
HOOOLLLYYYY SHIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
HHEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS TOOOOOO FAASSSSSSSTTTTTTTTT
AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
MAAANNNNNNNNN DOOOOOOWWWWWNNNNNNNNNN
Off the top of my head, Blood and EYE have better shotguns.
Enemies reacted well to being shot but I mean the sounds and animations of the guns themselves made them appear weak.
Best shotguns:
FEAR Combat Shotgun
Halo 1 Shotgun
Quake 2 Super Shotgun
what else?
>he didn't play the new DOOM
Also: Underhell and Left 4 Dead had some swell shotguns.
I liked the Painkiller shotgun. Looked cool and blasted enemies away real good.
I was actually talking about the new Doom. The weapons all have that sleek look, as well as the designs of the Mars base. I don't personally care for their portrayal of hell either.
Obviously.
I don't know what you're trying to say though. There was nothing memorable about the actual "form" of the levels either.
I don't get why people hate on the level design in this game. Given the grounded (other than spoopy ghosts), modern setting of the game it's not as if they could have built fantastic, elaborate levels. The office environments were well utilized by the AI, knocking over desks, hiding behind corners, shooting at you from upper floors, etc. Only way I could see it being improved is if the level design had been more vertically oriented, if that makes sense, like the way the levels in Thief or Thief 2 were designed with some measure of freedom instead of linear corridors.
uh... so you didn't go past the first 2 or 3 levels then
there is clearly an increasingly demonic look and feel to the bases just like in the original game and while the guns might look 2scifi4u, the game itself feels like doom.
>those embarrassing weapons
FEAR 2 had a lot of shit wrong with it but that was a biggest offense of all.
Everything in FEAR 1 had a punch to it. Everything in 2 barring the sniper rifle was a joke. The shotguns in particular. At least FEAR 3 got that right.
