Today is the 30th anniversary of Dragon Quest. Yuji Horii had a live broadcast where he talked about all the past games, but no news on Dragon Quest XI.
Anyway, let's celebrate 30 years of the most consistent series in gaming.

You mean archaic and boring press x repeatedly to win turn based gameplay
I'm afraid XI won't get localized and it haunts me.

Are only hope now is that the massive change in management in SquareEnix will allow more DQ games to come to the west. Since they're giving the green light to stuff like Bravely Second and SaGa smartphone games, they had better allow Dragon Quest as well. Which sells much better than those games.

It's almost always suffering
any chance for the interview to be translated eventually?
How much longer do we have to wait for the 3DS versions of VII and VIII?
Probably not. Since it didn't detail anything new.
not until the holidays or maybe they got canceled already. 11 will probably take 3 years minimum if it ever comes. and 10 was never an option.
>Dragon quest monsters 3D will never ever be brought to the west
rip in pieces me
at least it's still a prayer
Probably Fall 2016 for DQVII. And no idea for DQVIII.
>and 10 was never an option.
It was an option. SquareEnix just ignored the appeal of Dragon Quest for well, 20 years. Its conceivable that Dragon Quest X could have actually done better than FFXIV in the long run. As WoW clones are dying quickly. But Dragon Quest X is one of the few MMOs not trying to be a WoW clone.
Dragon Quest X is also being released in China soon. Its probably not going to help, but there's a slim chance that if they see a big success in China, they might consider a worldwide release. But its a better chance that it being in China will just allow us to play on the Chinese servers.
I love this meme.
Saltfag, go to bed or start learning some Japanese instead of sticking around on Sup Forums and whining about SE ignoring DQ before SE was even fucking formed.
>not trying to be a WoW clone.
When did it become a sandbox instead of gear treadmill, again?
>I love this meme
>spouts the 'go learn Japanese' meme
If you were such a serious fan, you'd do it desu.
All bark and no bite it seems.
>le canceled meme
Please stop.
>this idiot again
Enix did everything wrong and SquareEnix never did anything wrong! Just learn Japanese because SquareEnix won't localize the games!
hmm i didn't knew it was gonna be released in china idk maybe if nintendo gets desperate they will pressure SE for a western version in the NX
ITT: Everything is a meme.
I guess its bumping the thread.
it was already delayed and the nx launches next year. 7 may come reach the west but 8 wont make it.
Not that guy and actually a Japanese speaker, but signing up for a VPN in addition to monthly subscription fees for the game itself is a fair bit more than I'm willing to put up with.
Your uncle at nintendo tell you that?
Christ you're retarded.
Not that guy, but it really isn't. I don't know about you personally, but some people spend years complaining. If you're going to do that, you'd be better off learning Japanese if you play other Japanese video games or consume other Japanese media.
>debora meme
get some taste user
FAN TRANSLATION WHEN?
Need I remind you that when the merger happened FF was on PS2 and 10th main title had already come out long before too.
Meanwhile Dragon Quest VII was the latest thing on PS1 no less from years ago.
By the time DQVIII was out (2006 for west) it was pretty damn late to even try and make a huge effort to make it stick. Hell, they even put FFXII demo to go with it.
> Just learn Japanese because SquareEnix won't localize the games!
Deal with it because other fanbases deal with it as well. DQ fanbase seems to be incapable of doing this for whatever reason.
You can hate them as much as you want but some of these things you could actually fix by yourself rather than yell at SE on Sup Forums.
Not talking about X here mate, the series in general.
Dragon Quest V is my favourite game.
It's hard because I really love Final Fantasy IV a lot too but DQV is so perfect.
I would easily say it's the best JRPG out there
Never because Square Enix will issue a cease and desist
When DQX first launched on Wii, Iwata actually said he wanted to get it localized to the west. Someone at SquareEnix must have said no since we didn't get it.
Fun fact is Iwata also worked on the programming for the western release of Dragon Warrior 1 on NES. Just like how he did for Earthbound and Pokemon G/S. He was also the major advocate for making Pokemon in the first place.
Basically, Iwata has always had faith that Dragon Quest type games could get popular in the west. And Pokemon was the ultimate vindication for this. The fact that Enix and later SquareEnix kept giving up on the series after stuff like Dragon Ball and Pokemon became massive hits just shows an inconceivable level of incompetence.
same
Exactly. When you've spent over a year whining about no localisation at that point you could've just taught yourself Japanese and be playing the games.
>Not talking about X here mate, the series in general.
that would be pointless since all main games are already translated and you dont really need to know japanese to play or any other spin-off
"ふぁくざがいじんっ。あめりかじんがくそだ”

iwata is gone now. we will have to wait and see which direction nintendo will take.
Do you expect them to care?
The only real block here is 3DS' regionlock, really.
It's a P2P MMO dude, on Wii no less. That alone would spell disaster.
>And Pokemon was the ultimate vindication for this.
While I don't remember particular hype over Pokémon despite getting into it, it was huge multimedia thing that spanned stickers, anime, games, toys, tabletop games and more.
I've yet to play a DQ game but I enjoy FF and Chrono Trigger. I'm hoping to get into the series when VII releases on 3DS
I'm not going into this argument with you again since you always just discount everything I say. Needless to say DQVIII sold 1.5 million units. It was both critically and financially successful in the west. But SquareEnix followed it up with games on the DS that had limited marketing and print runs, sabotaging their own sales. Then gave up completely and Nintendo had to release games like Dragon Quest IX, which also sold 1.5 million units and was a major success. Then another 4 year drought with no DQ games released, which is entirely the fault of SquareEnix.
Not even going to respond to your stupid claims about 'its all Enix fault because before the merger it didn't sell well!' Because it sold well after the merger, then got ignored yet again. So fuck off.
You should start right now with IV senpai
Tell me that's coming to the Vita. Please.
There are DQs on the DS
>While I don't remember particular hype over Pokémon despite getting into it, it was huge multimedia thing that spanned stickers, anime, games, toys, tabletop games and more.
Which is exactly why most people say the thing that hurt Dragon Quest in the west was a lack of marketing. If DQ had gotten Final Fantasy/Pokemon levels of marketing and consistent yearly releases, it would have done well. Possibly even better than Final Fantasy. Especially during the Dragon Ball/anime boom.
>blaming horii
whats the point of having a 3ds without CFW? i only bought mine now that its free and imposible to brick. playing 8 for the first time and loving it.
>an arcade game
>coming to anything
Which version is best? and free?
If you like Chrono Trigger, you will probably like Dragon Quest V and VII. Dragon Quest VII even has a time travel story. And the remake has combined attacks like in Chrono Trigger.
Did they stop trying to turn it into an MMORPG?
Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favourite games of all time but what they've done after that have all been debacles aimed at the MMORPG type crowd
>implying i play rpg's with the intention of not having a story and to play with other people
>Best
>DQ
There isn't one.
Disregard that, I'm fucking retarded. I'll look around my local game store and see if I can find a copy.
Go for the DS one
I meant version of IV
That game was released on Wii. Directed by none other than Yoshida who produced Dragon Quest X and Final Fantasy XIV ARR. Just another of two dozen DQ games we didn't get in the west.
> Needless to say DQVIII sold 1.5 million units.
You'd be foolish to not acknowledge XII demo's part in this as well. Besides that, that's a bit under one fourth of what XII sold.
>Not even going to respond to your stupid claims about 'its all Enix fault because before the merger it didn't sell well!' Because it sold well after the merger, then got ignored yet again. So fuck off.
Yeah, keep on to your silly SE whining and delusions instead of learning Japanese, senpai.
>Which is exactly why most people say the thing that hurt Dragon Quest in the west was a lack of marketing.
Dragon Quest mainline lagged behind heavily so it was impossible for them to get the same kind of marketing help from Sony, really. (DQVI = SNES, DQVII = PS1 at the time PS2 was gaining ground already and FF was going to get its 10th installment)
>what is DQ III
IV on DS doesn't have party chat, if you can stand mobile controls go for that one.
DQIV is the one game in the series where there's really no good western version. DS version is a remake and has the best content, but the localization is one of the worst in history (even removing half the text). The smartphone port adds the missing text back in, but you have to suffer with smartphone controls and resolution. The original NES version lacks the extra content and you cannot control party members.
I would recommend starting with a game like DQV or VIII first. Much easier to get into the gameplay mechanics and we actually have complete versions of those games in the west.
Remember not to respond to the same stale bait we see in every thread guys. It just kills DQ threads.
This. Even if final fantasy fucks up at least they try and change. If you have played one dragon quest you've played them all.
>Even when Final Fantasy does something good, they toss it out in the next game for the sake of change
>Dragon Quest retains what it did good, then adds to it in the next game
Fixed that for you.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DRAGON QUEST
VIII a series zenith
...
Pretty sure Dragon Quest 1 didn't have a job system, chapter based story, skill points, alchemy system, monster collecting or multiplayer. But hey, you said they're all the same so it must have,
>this is x
>it's made of y
Is this some new meme?
not him but what's better for me
i've learned hira and kana and i've been using anki to study and i feel like i'm not learning as much
should i stick to tae kim's guide primarily and use anki to supplement that?
When the fuck are we getting a release date for VII 3D.
Here's hoping Dragon Quest XI can somehow equal Dragon Quest VIII in story and scope. If it can somehow surpass it, I will probably die of orgasm. But it'll be worth it.
I really hope you're being serious
yeah, consistently boring with only the most basic and shallow turn based combat ever
Sorry but I don't know.
I've been too lazy to start learning Japanese myself, maybe one of these days.
Damn you'd think that after the pile of feces that they got these last 10 years for the sake of change and "appealing to a wider audience" FFfags would stop with their "hurr DQ is always the same!" shitposting.
Its an old meme. Look up poo sandwich on google images.
The day after Nintendo announces their new handheld. So that DQVII gets overshadowed.
This meme is older than the sun
its so old it sat behind jesus in the 2nd grade
What's more funny is that everything they claim is bad about DQ is actually a fault of the Final Fantasy series.
Its also just sad as a whole. Both SquareEnix and Final Fantasy fans should want Dragon Quest to get more popular. Because Dragon Quest being popular would lead to more attention for Final Fantasy and SquareEnix as a whole.
...
Are you claiming SquareEnix wouldn't do better by having more than just Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts? Or are you just mad that I pointed out Final Fantasy has problems.
> Or are you just mad that I pointed out Final Fantasy has problems.
Mad? I'm just baffled by your logic by blaming all on FF and claiming that DQ being more popular would correlate to FF being more popular.
>brother shares a birthday with DQ
>today is also the day our dog died
fuck man
I didn't claim 'everything is the fault of FF'. I don't even know what you mean by this.
As for how DQ would make FF more popular, its called brand loyalty and marketing. Like how tons of Blizzard fans rushed out to buy Diablo III and Overwatch, having only played World of Warcraft before. But because its a 'Blizzard' game, they bought games from their other series.
Almost as bad as one of my friends who's birthday is 9/11.
>I didn't claim 'everything is the fault of FF'. I don't even know what you mean by this.
>everything they claim is bad about DQ is actually a fault of the Final Fantasy series.
???
>As for how DQ would make FF more popular, its called brand loyalty and marketing
By that logic, DQ would also make SaGa, NieR and whatnot also popular. They release bunch of stuff but only certain games actually sell well, doubt the sales would see a dent even if they shilled DQXI to their fullest.
If you're a Dragon Quest fan in the west and you haven't learned moonrunes already I genuinely feel for you.
who did you pick?
Nera here.
>tfw you will never play DQX in english.
Fucking MMOs.
DQ is competition to FF because they're both in the same genre, or at least were. I'd be fine if FF turned into a straight up ARPG series from now on if it meant we got more DQ games in the West. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason why we will never get DQX yet we got FFXIV easily.
>we got Rocket Slime, Sword and Heroes but not this
Why even live?
What about Dragon Quest Heroes II?
Deborah, those two are boring as shit.
can you read? I said 'a' fault of the Final Fantasy series. Not 'the' fault of the Final Fantasy series.
To dumb it down even farther since you don't seem to get it, whatever complaints people make about a Dragon Quest game, there's an example of a Final Fantasy game having the same problem.
>By that logic, DQ would also make SaGa, NieR and whatnot also popular.
If all of those series kept getting consistently released alongside Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, they would increase in recognition and sales. That's exactly what was going on in the SNES and PS1 era before SquareEnix started overlooking those series.
>They release bunch of stuff but only certain games actually sell well, doubt the sales would see a dent even if they shilled DQXI to their fullest.
Marketing one series alone is not going to make all the others sell 6 million, no. But a game doesn't have to sell 6 million to make a profit and gain a fanbase. SaGa still has a fanbase and people willing to buy the games. SquareEnix just isn't releasing them because SaGa doesn't sell 6 million copies.
You guys act like there's no intersection btwn DQ fans and FF fans.
There's a slim 0.001% chance that when Dragon Quest X releases in China, there might be an English translation. As many games released in China get one.
slim
I thought I was the only one!
Actually, my argument was that the fanbases cross over. Which is why I said it would help Final Fantasy if Dragon Quest got more popular. It certainly helps in Japan.
But Final Fantasy IV is one of the games that requires no grinding whatsoever as along as you dont run from everything.
The easy SNES version, yes. The DS version, no. The DS version has a few places where the difficulty spikes with no warning. Most notably going to the moon.
And Tower of Zot. Those fucking flamehounds goddamn
