Chrono Cross

What does Sup Forums think of this game? From what I've heard it does not live up to the original. Is it still a good game? Is it fun?

yes it is still a good game. The story is better than Trigger's, so is the gameplay. Only thing really is that the characters as a whole are worse.

That said, Serge, Lynx, Harle, and Kidd are better than Chrono, Marle, Lucca

Don't know OP. Why don't you play it and find out instead of listening to the internet.

Literally everything you said is wrong.

Sorry, I must be in the wrong place. I thought this is where people discuss video games.

>Chrono Cross is worse than Chrono Trigger
lol man, gotta love these top shelf memes! Xd

It's fantastic, great world, solid characters fun battle system. one of the best soundtracks of all time and interesting story even if it's delivered a bit poorly at times. Definitely worth a play through in my opinion.

If I had to describe CC in one word I'd say it's Overcomplicated.

It's an extremely beautiful game with one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming but they seemed confused as to what kind of game they wanted to make. The story gets a little convoluted, the combat system feels overstuffed with mechanics, and the cast of characters is WAY too big as if they were trying to make a suikoden title. You end up with far too much going on and the game loses a lot of it's specialness as a consequence.

Still a top tier JRPG but not without it's ehhhhh.

Yeah, nah.

It really improved on almost every facit of Chrono Trigger. The battle mechanics are something that haven't been done since and the story is really, really good. The only problem is that the cast of characters is humongous, so I never felt like I got to know or like any of the characters. The music is also some of the best ever. youtube.com/watch?v=ROKcr2OTgws

Good game that was incomplete. Should get a remake instead of Final Fantasy VII, but obviously SquareEnix won't.

Awful.

Chrono Cross is a game that would have been much better if it didn't have to follow up on Chrono Trigger's legacy of being an JRPG.

The gameplay is pretty shit, the fights are absurdly easy except for like two of them (Which are retardedly hard).

However the game is absolutely worth it for the top tier atmosphere, great characters, good (Even if a bit confusing) plot and for probably the best OST in all of gaming.

Oh, and the game murders the innocence and cheerfulness of Chrono Trigger, so keep that in mind. It's a game to make you feel, not a happy go-luck adventure.

Mechanically speaking, it objectively is. Cross' battles can't hold a candle to Trigger's.

Everything else is subjective.

The combat engines really aren't comparable. One is ATB with attacks limited by distance and combos. The other is pure turn based with a focus on percentages and stock charges. You can say you like one or the other better. But not definitively claim it is better by any facts.

I greatly enjoyed Chrono Cross, despite its issues with pacing and being forced to end earlier than it meant to.

The story as the game tells it is barely coherent and doesn't hold together, though. Characters will wax philosophical so often that it can be pretty hard to follow why things are unfolding as they are.

That said, reading some of the supplementary stuff helped deepen my understanding and appreciation for the story. Sad that it doesn't necessarily carry over to the game itself, but like I said, I still enjoyed it.

Favourite characters were Starky and Draggy.

I also think in post Evangellion Japan you could argue there was a demand or at least a perceived demand for an out there hard to follow plot. We got this Xenogears and I'm sure others that escape my memory at around that time.

Suck my dick dude

One of my favorite games of all time but holy fuck is it flawed. Completely shits the bed on disk 2.
Great use of color and a fantastic soundtrack though.

Its one of squares worst ps1 rpgs.

Music is quite nice, but combat, story, writing, and characters are ass.
avoid.

It's one of squares best PS1 jrpgs. Pick up

Out of curiosity what do you consider a good battle system? I found it fun if only because it's different.

You wish, dumb frogposter.

To be fair, Square has always tried to have overly convoluted and out there plots. Well before Eva. Even Final Fantasy I was trying to do this.

It's gigantic number of playable characters isn't really a good thing despite many people praising it, most have no real story whatsoever and are completely forgettable.

They should've expanded more on the 10 characters that are actually relevant.

You are right of course. But the problem isn't on the battle system - I quite like Cross' system -, it's how well they are utilized.

Face it m8, I love Cross, but the battles aren't fun or memorable.

Nice ad hom senpai

I hate Cross, but the battles were fun as fuck.
Kill yourself.

They just played with common fantasy tropes for the most part I would argue.

The music is still absolutely fucking unbelievable, it has one of the best soundtracks ever put into any video game.

The graphics look fantastic for a PS1 game, it's up there with Vagrant Story and FFIX in terms of detail.

Gameplay is standard JRPG fare with a little added complexity.

Story is pure dogshit. It's almost like the entire fucking team who made the game hated Chrono Trigger. This game goes far out of its way to take a shit on every character from Trigger to the point of being unacceptable.

So...the game is better than Trigger?
Time to play then.

Some of the boss fights are memorable to me. In fact, most of them are. The problem with Cross is that if you don't bother to learn the mechanics of combat, you get your ass handed to you and each boss battle is just chance. If you do learn the mechanics of the combat engine, the game just becomes a cakewalk, spamming summons and all field effects.

This is why the Fire Dragon is the point where many people gave up on the game. Since if you just try to spam attack and blue spells, it will rape you. But if you know how to abuse the combat, Fire Dragon is the easiest dragon of them all. Since you were given the blue summon right beforehand and can kill him in 2-3 turns.

I don't have a problem with it myself because I enjoy being overpowered. As long as I had to actually use my brain to figure out how to get overpowered. And not just have it given to me like in Final Fantasy games.

I'll put it like this. Demolition Man is a fucking awesome action movie. But if they were to call it Die Hard 2 and then explain that John McClane was stabbed by a mugger, everyone would fucking hate it.

That's Chrono Cross.

Pretty much. The same effect as most sequels to a mega hit. Same problem Final Fantasy VIII has. Which of course, many of the same people worked on.

I like Trigger more but that's just because of nostalgia, cross is a damn good game and has a 10/10 D's soundtrack like trigger, people don't like it because it wasn't just an exact copy of trigger, also harle a qt

The atmosphere is amazing and the soundtrack is fantastic. The story os good, but unnecessarily complicated after the second half. The battles are too easy with rare exceptions.
If you have time, go ahead and play Chrono Trigger and, after that, Chrono Cross.

Beat it several times, don't remember any of it.

Ended up trading it in later.

In a word, Chrono Cross is forgettable.

Best RPG on the PS1 after Suikoden I and II.

>Same problem Final Fantasy VIII has.
Huh? I think his point is was the Chrono Cross actually warped and stepped many plot threads from Chrono Trigger and took upon itself be the hero instead of its predescessor.

Final Fantasy VIII was crushed by not being able of escaping Final Fantasy VII's shadow.

The good: the combat system is different in a good way and the fact that they didn't make you grind. The optional bosses are a good challenge. Great graphics for its time and the backgrounds are beautiful. The soundtrack is god tier and the plot device is interesting (dimensions instead of time travel)

The ok: most of the fights border on the easy side once you learn how to control the element field. the story as a whole is decent but tries way too hard to be deep so it can be hard to follow especially after the half way mark.

the bad: too few party techs, 75% of the characters you recruit get no characterization after their introduction aside from flavor text, which is a bummer because a lot of the characters have potential to be cool. They should've cut the roster by about half and removed some of the shittier ones (turnip? poshul? macha? why.) since people only play with maybe 7 of them

>Final Fantasy VIII was crushed by not being able of escaping Final Fantasy VII's shadow.
It sounded to me like he was trying to just make the typical 'its a good game but not good [Chrono] game' argument. Which I pointed out, the reason for that is people expected a sequel to Chrono Trigger to be a literal clone of Chrono Trigger.

why are people suddenly posting chrono cross threads, its been like 10 years since ive actually seen this discussed on Sup Forums.

I see them all the time. Mostly one troll who keeps making them for attention by claiming its better than Trigger.

For the same reason a Legend of Dragoon thread sometimes pop up, people just have a burst of nostalgia.

Its a very, very different game so fans of Trigger don't like it as a sequel.

But that being said its just as good of a game in its own rite.

Its very mysterious and artsy, and that couldn't be farther from Trigger's happy-go-lucky, straight forward time travel story.

Its about multiverse theory rather than time travel, so rather than exploring a lot of different time periods you explore subtle differences between two very similar worlds.

A lot of people say the oversized cast ( I think around 60-something playable characters) is a detriment to characterization, but if you can figure out which characters are important to the plot and bring them with you in situations where it makes sense to bring them, you get about just as much from the ones who matter.

Play the visual novel "Radical Dreamers: The Jewel that Could not be Stolen", or just watch a quick playthrough on Youtube beforehand, as it functions very well as a prologue to and explanation of some of the more confusing story aspects of Chrono Cross, considering the multiverse nature of both stories.
