Now that the dust has settled, can we all agree this wasn't that bad?
Now that the dust has settled, can we all agree this wasn't that bad?
One of the worst sequels in video game history. The worst rape of a series when it comes to story in all of vidya history. A shit game with almost no content worth a shit in it.
Easily, and I mean EASILY, the worst Metal Gear game other than Snake's Revenge.
Anyone who defends this game is retarded.
Gameplay wise?
It played the best of any metal gear out at the time.
Graphically?
Yeah, really impressive. Some of the enemy designs like the Gekko's looked fucking retarded though.
Story wise?
It was fucking retarded.
So fucking retarded that it literally marred the entire experience, and the entire fucking franchise.
That's not an easy thing to do. To fuck up a story so bad that the entire franchise takes a hit in the eyes of fanboys is an incredible feat.
...
I think we can all agree it wasn't that good too. Pretty cool the first time you "play" it but it gets much worse with every replay. Easily the weakest numbered game in the series.
t. MGS 2 fan
What's the matter, not post-post-modern enough for your refined tastes?
Is Raiden the only character that ended up with a happy ending after the events of MGS4?
I liked it.
That said, I'll never actually PLAY it again.
Otacon and Sunny
Snake lives the rest of his life in peace and out of combat
I'd say that's a "happy" ending
>Otacon
he's depressed for life because his best fucking friend died
Being slightly better than V won't make it not shit.
I used to praise it for at least being "a real mgs game" but I went back and replayed it. It's not that good, it endlessly jumps the shark, and the cool parts are few and far between a bunch of garbage.
I cant tell if I hate it more than V or not, but 4 definitely started the downfall of what made the series good.
MGS was always retarded westaboo anime shlock, but it was charming and had heart. 4 and beyond lacks all of that and tries to do tons of different things poorly.
4 felt like someone was tying to recapture what made MGS great and missed the mark
5 felt like someone trying to force an MGS story while attempting to rip off moby dick and 1984.
I won't even comment on the awful psp games.
>still doesn't get his dick back
>happy ending
Nowhere near as bad as TPP, but all in all pretty disappointing.
1 > 3 > 2 > 4 > 5
he gets to be cool robot man, i wouldn't mind losing my dick to become a ninja
MGS1>MGSV TPP>MGS2>MGS3>MGS4>MGSV GZ>MGS PW
Why would you assume that? MGS 4 didn't just ruin the Patriots, it also ruined Big Boss and all of his comm crew and it used Shadow Moses as a cheap nostalgia bait.
MGR makes raiden's entire character arc in MGS 4 redundant though
>Alone
>Can't get used to normal life but had to adjust because old and no more major wars
>Body is dying despite being young
> All friends were killed or are running away
> Probably just enough money to survive
> Not job because old
Such a happy life.
>TPP over anything
kill yourself
Yeah, it was actually rather good
Coming from someone who wasn't completely fucking blinded by nostalgia while playing it
First two episodes were incredible. Rapidly went downhill after that with a few notable exceptions. Gameplay was great, but there simply wasn't enough of it.
4 was incredibly bogged down by trying to tie MGS1-3 (and even Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2) together by the thinnest of strands.
The really funny thing is that MGS5's story is just slightly less retarded than MGS4's but the gameplay is so much better that you can almost look past the dumb shit. MGS4 has hour after hour of retarded cutscenes.
You know, everything post4 was garbage. Peacewalker's story was fucking insulting considering the ending of MGS3.
>Nowhere near as bad as TPP
t. Retard
MGS4 was and still is one of the best games in the franchise, gameplay wise, bosses, level design, story, action sequences, it's all actually there and in top form.
MGS has always had strong elements of story and character progression and it just seems as if the length of some of the cutscenes in MGS4 tipped some people over the edge and cause some knee jerk reactions and caused people to go from enjoying the game to 100 and call the entire thing shit because they got more story than they wanted.
It's reductive and stupid, you can skip all the cutscenes you want and the game still has as much gameplay as the first three games and the gameplay is literally an improvement over all 3 so what are people complaining about?
Nothing, it's literally a circle jerk, I'd even wager that those who seek to demonize this game are people who migrated to PC after PS3 and have to justify why their PS3's and it's game are not good. Sad people man.
MGR is non canon shit, the original story has been thrown away since the cancellation of MGS R
>Snake lives the rest of his life in peace and out of combat
>has only a couple of months to live
>can't enjoy life because he is too old and weak
>happy ending
>Le TPP is bad meme
>4 over anything
Death isn't enough of a just punishment.Your balls being cut off and shoved down your throat is the only way, my friend.
He gets a vibrating 12 inch cyber cock instead
drebin
johnny and meryl
>TPP apologist
End yourself.
It's a beautiful mess, and fitting end to the series. Snake Eater probably should've been the stop, as 2 and 3 were already an extension that fans and the industry asked for, not in Kojima's plans. But at this point there was the world after Sons of Liberty, so it was on his shoulders to culminate everything and I think it's got some amazing parts.
Skipping a dissection on what I do and don't like about Peacewalker or MGSV, I'd rather they not have existed and almost consider the true Metal Gear Saga actually stops here.
TPP is objectively a piece of shit and nothing you say will change that. Take you and your shit opinion and throw yourself out the window.
Act 3 is the absolute lowest point of the series.
>It's an on rail shooting segment episode
Makes you wonder how much better this series would have been had the whole snake story would have been loosely connected. Just snake doing missions to stop the patriots without the over arching narrative bogging it down because of all the dumb parameters kojima roadblocked himself with.
I felt like TPP tried to do that, but shit the bed pretty hard because he had to try to connect it to MG1-2
>still has as much gameplay
Doesn't equal quality. The first two chapters are the only ones actually fun, 4 is okay for nostalgia but following someone around + a boss fight and an on rails scene is all act 3 is made of. Act 5 is literally just one room to sneak through, two boss fights and a fuckton of cutscenes.
One could weigh how much more amazing "gameplay" there is in PW/GZ/TPP all day, but they still felt like estranged cousins to the actual family of MGS1-4.
You liked the empty open world AAA explosion simulator. The raid mudhut in a circle 100 times and do copy and paste missions in a game with zero story or reason
You're a fool and I'm glad I'm selling my copy of MGSV right now
Pros
>improved gameplay of all previous Metal Gears
>decent boss fights
>pretty compelling story
>plenty of extras
>good looking graphics and animation that hold up well today
Cons
>excessive amount of cutscenes
>takes itself almost too seriously at times
>color scheme was really washed out. Middle east was all brown. Shadow moses was all blue.
>The game was pretty linear, despite being well made
Meh
7/10
Only enjoyable for those already a MGS fan.
I've always said that the Metal Gear would heavily benefit from a "James Bond" style of story telling.
>Snake in some capacity
>Individual, largely isolated and complete stories
I think thats why I found MGS3 so refreshing after 2 because it was almost entirely stand alone outside of some references to stuff in the future. 2 was too reliant on MGS1, even though it was still pretty isolated.
Act 2>Act 1>Act 4>Act 5>Eating shit>Act 3
Not as disappointing as The Phantom Pain, that's for sure.
It was fucking awful from a story perspective. Absolutely awful. Just dreadfully bad jesus christ.
You have an objectively shit opinion. Probably just butt blasted over the story that hasn't been good since the third game.
You got some hot opinions buddy. Sorry that TPP actually has loads of gameplay instead of 10 hours of boring cutscenes.
>say a game is objectively a piece of shit
>don't explain why
underage contrarian babby.
Not to mention, PW's mechanics and controls are gimped compared to 2/3/4, the story is ok but ultimately slips into banal repetition, and a lot of the rpg elements are just unit grindy. Meh.
V is better than 4
The middle east setting was drab and boring. The best part of MGS4 was when you were in the city.
Can I get some legit reasons why MGS 4/5 suck, besides people not liking the story?
>takes itself too seriously
Literally every metal gear not named revengence.
I dont think anyone is saying that MGS5 plays bad.
But it's got great gameplay mechanics tied to really bland and boring environments.
There is -one- indoor environment and that's when you go rescue fucking Codetalker at the damn end of the game. MGS5 is literally just a fulton simulator, which makes it really fucking boring,
The motorcycle chase in MGS3 was fucking awesome. Weird how Kojima managed to fuck up the same mechanic in MGS4; guess thats just another good aspect to MGS we can give credit to Fukushima for.
>MGS3
>Equip the LMG
>Hear snake yelling like he's John Rambo
It's fucking amazing.
In retrospect it was obvious as fuck that the MGS3 crew were intended to become the characters 4 showed them as, with the possible exception of Zero, and even then it's not inconceivable that even his ultimate identity was planned
And I don't really see why anyone who started with MGS1 wouldn't like going back to shadow moses
Nah. MGS1 was just an action movie. MGS2 tried to hard to be meta but how seriously can you take Raiden? MGS3 is extremely over the top James Bond. MGSV has no charm at all.
you can snipe everyone with the tranq gun thus meaning as long as you can see an enemy you will never get caught
this makes the entire game redundant
also the bosses in 4 are some of the worst shit ever
Going backt o Shadow Moses and fighting in Rex was pure fanservice. Don't act like it added anything plot wise.
Autists that care too much about the clusterfuck that is the lore of metal gear games, they can't get over the fact that some Metal Gear Solid game completely shattered their perfect headcanon. They literally have no argument on why 4 or V are as bad games as they claim.
so do any of you gay babies have any reason to dislike MGS4 besides MUH CUTSCENES?
agreed 100%
Hopefully if kojimbo ever does a spirtual successor to mgs again he just does that.
>>excessive amount of cutscenes
If you had to pick, would you chose MGS4-style overload amount of cutscenes or MGSV-style handful of short cutscenes and shit tons of audio tapes?
4 - cutscenes overpower gameplay, much more than usual, to the point that it you don't feel like it's a game. Only 2 of the acts are really fun to play more than once, rest of the game is bogged down by the obtrusive story.
5 - unfinished and lack of original side missions like peace walker. Can get repetitive and there aren't really any detailed indoor sections
Those are the only issues if you leave the writing out of it.
Not that guy but here's what I about MGS4
>MGS4 was and still is one of the best games in the franchise, gameplay wise, bosses, level design, story, action sequences, it's all actually there and in top form.
MGSV lacks level design, codec calls, bosses, action sequences and story. It has good gameplay and the single boss you fight 3 time is fun but this is not enough to save the game or warrant it being better than MGS4 which is a fully realized experience with all elements of MGS in one pacakage.
MGSV is complete and lacks too much to be that high on your list. It's still good gameplay but fuck me it falls falt on its face in almost every single other area
You mean where you spend 80% of the chapter walking behind a guy?
>the "attribute all credit to fukushima" meme
If Fukushima had such a midas touch, where the fuck is he now?
Impossible to debate when you hand wave stuff away.
>The story was always retarded, play it for the gameplay
>"Ok there's only 3 hours of actual game here"
because 4 just rehashed it. I personally thought the chase in 3 was also shit because you were no longer playing a stealth game for like the entire last 40% of the game
It's probably because in MGS 3 snake would auto-aim, so you didn't really have to focus on aiming and could enjoy the chase like a cinematic
why is Johnny Depp dressed like an autist?
I never pretended otherwise
You don't impress anybody by behaving like you're above fanservice though, not all fanservice is bad
Sleeping with the fishes.
>Raided up Meryl marries Johnny on the rebound
Nope.
Except its the best metal gear. Go ahead and skip the cutscenes fag.
V hands down. The writing isn't really that good anymore and ive gotten 200x more replay value out of it than 4
according to that meme image he was assassinated by yakuza like iwata
It completely nullifies the whole point of MGS 2 by establishing that the big shell incident objectively happened
>he misses codec calls
Yeah I hated how the game didn't interrupt my gameplay every 10 minutes for retarded exposition.
>bosses, level design, story, action sequences, it's all actually there and in top form.
Fuck you and whatever fucking notion you have of good level design, story, action sequences, or bosses.
The bosses are all bullet sponges with no semblance of an actual strategy. Raging Raven is ESPECIALLY guilty of this. Crying Wolf, a woman inside a fucking fully mobile four-legged robot, instead of just RAMMING SNAKE DOWN WITH FORCE opts to use a fucking rail gun? When she already demonstrated in act 1 she can ram people with it? Fuck off. Not only that, the fight wouldn't have been interesting enough on its own so they added FROGS to annoy the shit out of you.
The chase sequence in Europe apes a sequence done BETTER in MGS3. Its second half is one of the worst sequences ever in video games, as you don't have to do a THING, and all of Raging Raven's drones will miss you each time.
The first half of the chase sequence is a huge missed opportunity. The devs give you this fairly large fucking area for a Metal Gear game to explore with Europe, and instead of going back through it with actual interesting guard placement, you do the stupid fucking chase sequence.
Other than that MGS4's gameplay is pretty great. Act 1, the first half of act 2, act 4, the first part of Outer Haven. Good stuff. I don't think I have to get into the fucking narrative, do I user?
We discuss games in Sup Forums, not cinematic clusterfucks.
The levels were dull, the gameplay was boring in spite of the tight controls, and the cutscenes were excessively long.
>I'm no hero. Never was, never will be.
>that acoustic guitar that starts playing
Maximum feels
>because you were no longer playing a stealth game for like the entire last 40% of the game
Uh, the motorcycle chase happened nearly right at the end of the game. The only things that come after the chase are 1 boss fight, followed by a small escort mission, then the final boss fight. If you consider all of those 3 things 40% of the game, you should replay MGS3 or take some coursed on math.
>The bosses are all bullet sponges with no semblance of an actual strategy.
>brb fire rocket launcher and run a circle around zoid boss in mgsv
>brb put water on fire boss
>brb run in circles and unload magazines into cypher enemies
>MGSV
>Strategy
Stopped reading there.
isn't it fair to assume that anyway? sure, it could have been a simulation for raiden but then snake and liquid show up uninvited so its clearly a thing that actually happened
Daily reminder is scored better than MGSV in both userscore and critic score.
Don't listen to the ultra contrarians on Sup Forums. They are jaded tired PC gamers who hate video games and consoles.
First time I hear someone complain that there aren't enough cutscenes and story in a video game.
What the fuck when did I mention MGSV? But while we're on that subject, MGSV's primary problems are how "realistic" they made animations. I had a discussion with another user about this, and I think it's in the back of every MGSV player's mind really: All the guards in MGSV react too slow to be in keeping with their mocapped animations. They notice a downed buddy? A full second and a half before a reaction. This is pervasive across all their animations.
the metal gear series is both older than you and has contributed more to video games, it will stay right here
he wasn't comparing it to mgsv you dummy
Considering how story driven previous Metal Gear games were, it's something you come to expect from a story driven and character driven game. It's just comes as a surprise when one of the games most important assets gets regulated to audio files you play on a cassette tape.
I'll get heat for this but I felt MGSV had enough cutscenes, just not enough story. Some people will argue that the cassette tapes should've been cutscenes and ill admit some of them should. But it told it's tiny story well enough
the reception of a game on release is not the reception after people have time to digest it
GTA IV is considered shit now and that got amazing scores
>older than you
Oh, I'm sorry, no. I was in my teens when Metal Gear's 6/10 snorefest came to the MSX2 and later badly ported to the NES, and my late 20s when MGS basically helped the bastardization of the game industry into a fucking casual style-over-substance shitfest.
Wanna try again?
"MGS4 belongs on Sup Forums" was a thing when MGS4 had come out, user. Pic related.
>MGS4 is a movie
I was calling MGS a shitty movie back when the first one was released and moot was still sucking his mom's tits.
It's been a thing longer than this fucking shitfest existed.
Bullshit.
Well I don't know about what you do in your personal time man. Yes, people had been calling MGS a movie since its inception. No, the "MGS4 belongs on Sup Forums" was a thing exclusive to MGS4 when it was released. No one did that for the other MGSs because they didn't have the absurd cutscene length MGS4 has. If you have been linking to Sup Forums in other MGS threads in the past I certainly haven't seen those threads.
Sorry, it's true. First "console" was one of those multi-pong game things, then Atari 2600, then a Commodore 64.
I do it pretty much every time a goddamn MGS thread comes up, and have done it on other boards/discussions as far back as the original MGS.
