Rising's story was a piece of shit. The game itself was a piece of shit, but enough people liked the game itself that it being shit isn't unanimous. However, I'm pretty sure NOBODY takes the story seriously. If they do, it has to me with the utmost irony and I hope against hope that such a person wouldn't teeter off that ledge into madness and come to appreciate the story with sincerity.

I actually thought it might be somewhat salvageable, with Raiden showing development in his convictions and the way he thinks and what he's fighting for, then Sam throws some memes at him and it's enough to break his psyche. Complete retardation.

No, MGS4 ruined his character and arc completely, among other things.

Rising fucked things even more somehow. It's crazy how much they fucked up Raiden.

Do the Codec Calls with his team right after the Monsoon fight. How they talk to Raiden makes him realize that he's made a bit of an ass of himself with how edgy he's being, and it all plays back into Raiden wondering who he is and who he should be, which is the question that has been dogging him since MGS2. Rising can be enjoyed by itself as just being over-the-top and sometimes stupid with how scenes play out, but they kept true to the character on how much he relies too much on preconceived notions on how things should be and how fragile that's made his worldview. If Rising 2 ever comes out and is based on Raiden, then it'd be great to see if he continues growing and self-actualizes.

Story for Raiden was pretty good in Rising. There was never really that same closure for all his killing the same way that Snake kind of dealt with it, and ultimately it's the same conclusion for Raiden in that he accepts who he is even though it's no where near an ideal.

Mariachi Raiden was the greatest thing that ever happened to him.

Raiden being a mass murderer edgelord is what his adoptive father made him out to be and there is no way for him to escape that.

The logic goes as "it was bad before, so anything is better, including something worse". It doesn't help that DmC existed, so people were literally forced to glorify anything else that came out at the same time.

It was an absolute improvement over his MGS4 iteration and it ended up surpassing it with flying fucking colors. God MGR's narrative and themes are so good.

Rather a competent edgelord than an incompetent superrookie.

It was the style, gameplay, soundtrack, characters, and CUHRAYZEE that made the game so good.

Story just needed to be there for a place to put everything else

The story really is nothing to sneeze it. I'll perhaps concede that the game really didn't need Jack The Ripper but it really doesn't harm the narrative or themes too much at all.

This. Rising's codecs were fucking great, some of the best in Metal Gear. Character development, character banter, world building, etc. God I hope we get Rising 2 with the same writer.

It's a complete leap from his MGS4 ending, which redeemed him on all levels. It isn't canon.

He changed him from an avatar(and one ten times better than V's at that) into a character with brutal changes. You think the cons outweigh the pros? The motivation to make him "cooler" is very infantile, but the guy barely had backstory. The best thing he could do is "go home jack"(I know it's Boss' line) after 2

He's aware that he's being an edgy shit, friends and foes call him out on being a edgy shit, but more importantly he is being an edgy shit trying to save children from becoming just as much of an edgy shit as him.

And that's just plain cool.

Honestly I prefer MGR over MGS2, it's just much more fun to have characters spout corny one-liners and edgy screams

They were a skeleton of any MGS game's codecs. They basically went through a checklist of things that appeared in MGS1-3 and added a little of every item they found. You even have Wolf and Sunny as throwaway contacts that barely have any lines, just like in MGS2.

MGS2 and onward story is a god damn joke and anyone who takes it seriously should be gassed.

What I like about MGR's story is that there's some semi-serious things going on in the background but the cheesy character interaction keeps it fun and lively, which fits with the way more action-oriented gameplay compared to the MGS series. It doesn't get in the way of gameplay with hour-long cutscenes, and if you are interested in the story there's still codec calls and shit you can do on your own time.
