The communist idea of equality is totalitarian, so it can't work. You can't guarantee equality of outcome. You can guarantee equality of opportunity.
The idea of material equality however just doesn't work yet because automation hasn't yet made human labor obsolete. When energy, goods and services can be provided so efficiently that there's no reason to charge for things or to request a salary, then that will be achieved. Lazy people won't be working at all, but they don't even need to, and those who genuinely care about society will work for free, for the good of everyone including themselves. But you will never have a collectivist equality of everything because everyone is an individual. Life isn't fair, but it's close enough. For most people.
