Best campaign since FEAR in 2005

>best campaign since FEAR in 2005

What the fuck happened?

How can an id staffed with newfags do a better job than an id staffed only with oldfags in 2004?

I started playing this expecting it to be shit and only stopped 6 hours later. Then beat it on my next setting. This game is a MASTER CLASS in game design and pacing

A lot of those newfags were probably fans of the original game and not lorefags who wanted a walking simulator like Carmack.

Seriously fuck Carmack, fucking hack.

>Carmack wanted a walking simulator
[citation needed]

Here are my undereducated guesses, but in 2004, they had no John Romero, no American Mcgee, and John Carmack was too concerned with pushing TECHNOLOGY.
Now, you have a bunch of people who grew up making Doom and Quake mods actually making these games.

Because they finally decided to do something similar in style to the originals. Is it perfect? Nope, some of the cinematics are boring and get in the way and platforming can go overboard in some areas, plus the corridor then arena level design in the UAC levels can get annoying after a while. Overall, it is pretty great, but some glaring flaws.

On a semi-related note, what are some good snap maps that you have seen?

>Carmack
>lorefag
what
he's always just been a tech guy

>It's a "blaming Carmack for gameplay" post

Tim Willits was reponsible for Doom 3 and RAGE. I don't think either is bad but holy shit, people keep acting like Carmack does everything for the games, including the level design

Look at the cancelled D44M gameplay

>Now, you have a bunch of people who grew up making Doom and Quake mods actually making these games.

That's no guarantee of quality, since it fits Tim Willits to a T. He was hired because of his Doom and Quake modding IIRC

>Marty "40 inch penis" Stratton, hired as a business guy in 1997 is put on game director duty for NuDoom
>fucking knocks it out of the park

What the hell happened?

hasubandos never disappoint

I want Marty-sama to put his dick in all my favorite classic FPS franchises.

D44M isn't perfect by any means but I'd take its level of quality for a new entry in all those dead series any day.

>FEAR in 2005
>Not Crysis in 2007

I thought Crysis' campaign shit the bed a little at the midpoint. Once the ayy lmaos arrives it basically starts nosediving

Since this did well, which classic FPS should get the treatment next?

>40 inch penis
That sounds like it'd hurt

Why is it, in Doom, the "human" enemies are shit, whereas in Crysis, it's the non-humans that suck?

I don't know if it'll be at E3, but I'd bet on a new Quake.

Carmack is not a hack or a lore guy though, he's just a huge techie. He was never that good as design, that was Romero's spot. Carmack never even cared about video games, he just liked the challenge of pushing hardware. It's probably good that he left video games to be honest.

Quake V hopefully. I'd love to see a return to a Lovecraftian style environment, and it'd be great to get Reznor on board for another soundtrack.

I'd KILL for a Hexen reboot

Creating good multiplayer requires more abstract design than any dev would be willing to put in a modern game. If they make a new Quake, the multiplayer will be mediocre compared to the (now dead) Quake 3.

FEAR's campaign was shit though. people only like it for its gameplay. unless, you really like warehouse themed levels, and generic hallways. don't get me wrong, I'm a huge monolith fan (nolf, blood), but FEAR's campaign was generic as fuck.

This.
Quake, but with Q1 aesthethics.
Leave high-tech stuff for other franchises.

I wouldn't put doing the next MP in-house past id. A lot of people have given them shit for NuDoom's outsourced MP (which almost feels like another game compared to the SP) and I'll bet they regret outsourcing it since that's basically what's keeping the game from scoring 10/10s (or nearly so) all around

I doubt he would ever score a video game again being an oscar winner

Carmack literally hates story.

>Doom is still 30€
literally why
it's a fucking singleplayer game

But Q1 is Cthulutech. You don't need to go full pew pew huge blue room-sized laser like Doom but you absolutely need some sci-fi in there to create the contrast

The techbase levels (usually the first few of any given episode) are some of the best-looking in all of Q1

Carmack left the industry...well, because he's rich as fuck and his autism led him elsewhere...but because the industry also STOPPED pushing hardware.

When Microsoft threw into the ring with the XBAWKZ they began pouring money into holding the video game industry back, tying it to old, bad hardware inside the console DRM boxes. The 360 and PS3 were holding games back for years, and then the Xbone and PS4 are even WORSE. A fucking smartphone has more powerful hardware than any "current gen" console.

That's why the manufacturing side is focused so intently on micronization of the components to make everything smaller, sleeker, cheaper and more powerful. Ipads and fucking flappy birds is what is pushing the hardware these days, not PC video games.

>the gameplay is good
>the campaign is shit

but the campaign is literally the only thing people talk about with that game, no one liked the multiplayer

>smartphone has more powerful hardware than any "current gen" console.

wut

Carmak hasnt left the injustry he is 'pushing boundaries' by working with oculus.

>A fucking smartphone has more powerful hardware than any "current gen" console.

They do NOT

No smartphone in the world could run the new Uncharted to any real degree of fidelity

Sure, but I meant Q1 as opposed to Q2 or Q4 where the occult/medieval themes are non-existent and it's just cyber aliens.

I thought he was working on rockets or something?

That's his hobby. He won a X-Prize just from fucking around with rocket science

> Fear
> Good campaign
Choose one, retard

Neither can the PS4

Nice quads. But if you already think it runs bad on a PS4, imagine on a smartphone

This game reminds me a lot of the Metroid Prime games.

Did anyone else get that vibe?

3 playthroughs to get throphies. Weapon mastery is glitched and stop my plat

The concave visor/HUD + double jumps of course did remind me of MP

Quake is the obvious one after Wolfenstein and Doom but I'd also love Hexen/Heretic. I'd also like Prey 2 to finally come out but that dreams been dead for years now.

There's rumors Arkane are making Prey 2 after Dishonored 2.

hurt me plenty then

In terms of covering more design space, Quake after Doom wouldn't be that great.

Doom is a game where the player uses high tech weapons against monstrous enemies. So the best kind of game to do now would be one with fantastical weapons and human enemies,

this, fear is the most overrated game here

What the hell is up with the ending though? The rest of the game is great but jesus..

Most fun I've had with a AAA game for a while

I liked it.
Whatever his name is mr Roboto is pretty cool.

I think he's since changed his position. He probably saw gaming as something the player experiences, not a character.

Nonetheless, Tom Hall did nothing wrong.

No no no. John Carmack yelled at id Software to scrap the cancelled Doom 4 build that looked like CoD. He was at a meeting and got out of his chair and said Doom should be about demons and shotguns.

That map as well. Total Prime vibes.

But Doom is way faster than Prime. In fact Prime is one of the slowest shooters out there.

>tfw you get the Berserk power up for the first time

I got bored with glory kills and refunded the whole thing.

You are a fucking idiot.

>Finish a fight
>Find a berserk, quad damage, or haste powerup right after
It is one of the most disappointing things.

But you know what John Carmack was responsible for?

That happened to me five times. I counted them.

Five fucking times.

>wipe house
>oh turns out there was a rune here

JUST

The ending is basically open to lead up to another DOOM. If this game sucked that could've been a horrible choice, but I would love nothing more than another DOOM game now and that ending sets it up perfectly.

I really fucking hope we go to Saturn, that shit would be awesome.
