Skype is fucking dogshit though, the voice quality is terrible and it's a data hog. Teamspeak is ok and so is Mumble but Discord is just better overall.

Mumble has better privacy and needs a server to be able to run. However the quality is better, and it is FOSS.

Discord doesn't need a server, can run in a browser, but has poor privacy thanks to being proprietary.

For your typical gamer, Discord is clearly a better choice due to being easy to use without the need to buy a Raspberry Pi or use public mumble servers. Most people don't give a fuck about quality on a voice chat application as long as you don't sound like a robot, they don't care about privacy either. Plus, Discord has a nicer UI which is probably why people want to use it over Ventrilo or TeamSpeak. It's Skype without Microshit advertised towards gaming.

Mumble is by far the best in both quality, latency and CPU usage.

Discord literally admit recording and selling your data but then again who the fuck doesn't do that these days.

Personally I hate the interface of Discord, it's far less intuitive than a decade old Ventrilo server which is quite astounding. You have text channels separated from the voice channels for some reason and you can't link them together. It's just dumb.

Being free and all that jazz is of course a big plus, but anyone who can afford 2 bucks a month for a mumble server is far better off using that in my opinion.

Oh and of course you can write your own plugins for Mumble.

How does someone come to this conclusion? Do you also think talking on the phone or chatting with strangers who you happen to share interests in public weird?
