Same thing happens to the 980.
AMD hardware favors higher resolutions because nvidia used color compression and memory tricks to improve performance in maxwell and they face diminishing returns at higher resolutions.

I bought a 390 because it was 5% faster than a 970 @ 2560x1440.
At 1920x1080 they used to be neck and neck.

Now the 390 has a sizeable lead at all resolutions and is virtually on par with a 980.

i'm using a 760 and I'll probably ride it to death. Witcher 3 is literally the most demanding game and it seems to run plenty damn fine on high settings--with Nvidia GimpWorks turned off. I don't give a fuck about muh realistic hair software if it alone causes up to 20-30 FPS loss.

maybe the 1160s will be out by the time this card bites it. I've forsaken driver updates to try to prevent Nvidia from cucking me with a driver designed to gimp performance or burn my card out.

TW3 isn't kind to the GTX 760. Even with hairworks turned off, you're gonna be seeing dips in to the 40s even with shadows and foliage distance on low. And that fucking stuttering in Novigrad, god damn.

Also ultra settings are shittly coded and give you tiny extra detail to the game that you have to point out to people to notice.

What GPU? You might have to run it on lowest settings and lock it to 30 FPS, even if you can max out others at 60 FPS. The game really runs like shit.

Not the person you're replying to, but the 270x can handle pretty much every game released thus far (medium settings at 60 fps) TW3, GTA IV, Fallout 4. The only games where I had an unplayable framerate were Dark Souls 3 and the latest Doom.

I run a GTX 980ti and I still wouldn't play that shit game from a shit series.

What should I go with if I want a secondary emulation PC that will only be used for emulation up until Dolphin/PSCX2/PPSSPP (at 1080p and a stable 60fps preferably) and is required to be as cheap as possible?

As long as you use an intel CPU instead of AMD you're fine. They're known to be much better for emulation.

You can go with any i5 really, the newer the better of course. For the graphics card you can use anything from a few years ago.
