It's a marketing ploy to hammer the names of the Pokémon into the kids heads so that they can be remembered, and thus marketed easier.

I for one think it's much cooler when the Pokémon sound like actual animals. And I'm not talking about some voice actor growling into the mic, I mean real animals.
