What went so right ?
What went so right ?
devs understood what makes turn based games fun and applied the right dose a reality. the right dose of stereotypes wit the mercs also helped a bit...
damn i want a jagged alliance 3...
>jagged alliance 3
new series when
Seriously, the mercs have so much fucking variety
Idealistic newbies, Badass Veterans, racists, sexists, Insane bombers, knife nut casanovas, etc.
Game Devs should take some notes on this
>damn i want a jagged alliance 3...
I have some bad news for you.
Never, unfortunately.
Kalypso shoud just keep making tropico games
at least it wasn't a 3, and wasn't this literally a shitty re-working of 2, just with some character swaps?
They tried twice to bring it back in recent years, and they both didn't do so well
favorite mercs? hidden gems instead the usual ivan/lynx/wohever setup?
i fucking love spider, cheap to start out with, high wisdom so levels fast, shitty shooting but that is raised automatically, great doctor, stealthy and nightops is a great combo
Primed.....
That's because it needs a dev team with actual talent.
my favorite runs were usually stupid shit like running with tarballs only for the first few cities.
Though most of the time i just went with someone to train militia, then a ragtag group of garbage.
>Hidden gems
In all my games, I have never foun MD useless
This guy is the Gumpy of AIM
>Fave merc
Really like Conrad.
>almost all the new content and mechanics in recent 1.13 builds are developed by one guy
based flug
>Game has cover of a person with a gun
>Strategy game
honestly i dont understand why is this so damn hard? keep the mechanics of the 2nd maybe with 1.13, put the same shit under a new engine, make it moddable for community maps, mercs whatever, bam instant cash
seriously, just look at xcom rebirth, which i love but feels dumbed down to ja2
I think Shadowrun: Dragonfall does TBS pretty right, if you're looking for something similar.
closest you'll come is SS, which is no JA2 but it's my second favorite in the genre
1.13's mechanics with regard to the weapons and stuff changed drastically with HAM and NCTH when they were added years ago and to this day, the stats for guns still have to be manually edited individually to make them handle more uniquely
I wouldn't be suprised if there was an underground cult worshipping him
fucking flugente, how does he do it ?
youtube.com
These didn't even exists in the game
This sounds awesome. I've never played the first game.
Should I start with one or can I jump in the series with 2?
Just go straight to 2.
te first one is...Dated
Just go with 2 and apply the 1.13 mod
you can't go wrong
i always disable NCTH, i dont understand that shit, call me noob
but i love how sniper rifles feel like actual sniper rifles not just another rifle with increased range and damage
ss was alright but the maps were way too tiny, and your soldiers had no personality whatsoever
also if i remember correctly it was way too easy
I didn't get it, I guess. I'd rather play lightning fast XCOM matches when every decisions and every shot can fuck your entire squad in a second, rather than JA2 with its nevernding 20 people standing 2 feet from one another and missing every shot, occasionally dealing 1% damage.
second one, play vanilla first then add 1.13 (it adds way too many shit, and you want to disable half of it, but without vannilla you wont know what)
>NCTH
Why the fuck doesn't it apply to enemies ?
Ivan can't hit the broadside of fucikng texas, while enemies can't blow your head of from 10km with a .22 LR
were you playing vanilla or 1.13?
i don't think i've ever experienced dealing negligable damage in 1.13 due to different ammo types
> JA2 with its nevernding 20 people standing 2 feet from one another and missing every shot, occasionally dealing 1% damage.
1. You can right click to aim better
2. You haven't expierienced the pain of losing your entire squad, simply because you missed some guy in the background behind a bush
how the fuck was I supposed to know he had a fucking mortar
if you miss at 2 feet you clearly played a different game, everything is deadly in close quarters. granted starting out with handguns and missing always is usual, cause everything will will beoutside of your range which is 10-02 tile for handguns, since the enemy usually has numerical superiority , they can just take shitty low chance shots and hope for a lucky hit, which you cant do
i always felt finding your first rifle/carbine was the biggest step
They fucked up the combat for both of them. Back in action was actually not bad but the real time combat threw it off
you might have been playing a version that doesn't have NCTH properly adjusted
now you can experience the same thing with enemy combat jeeps and tanks going around in patrols
I wish Phantom Pain was similar to jagged alliance. I would kill for such a game.
Also, such a shame that Flashback is a shitty game. Where can I roleplay as badass mercenary except for russian 7.62 and Silent Storm?
Did my first playthrough with the popular mod (1.13 was it?) and had a lot of fun.
I never actually finished it though. Towards the late game, it kinda became a chore once those fucking tanks started rolling in. Either they glitch the whole fucking sector I'm defending, making it impossible to win. Or they ass rape me 10 seconds into the battle, due to them sometimes homing on me across the map and driving over every fucking obstacle.
I really liked the stuff 1.13 offered tho. The defense missions with +60 black ops coming at you is pretty fun.
I also really loved the shopping mechanics, having to buy, wait, and have someone go haul the stuff to your guys.
If anyone tries out 1.13, make sure to use the line of sight information (END key) often, since the view range is rather brutal.
I've been wanting to play this for a while but the game just seems overwhelming. Should I just start playing and figure it out as I go? What are my chances of actually completing an ironman run?
Howdy Ace
Tiny. Game is slow as fuck and unforgivable to newcomers. It's really fun, though.
for enemies it can happen, remember some great salt, when i played with my lategame sneaky silent night attack squad:
sneaking around corner, bump into elite soldier, here have a 2 burst from the silenced smg, he survives, almost no damage whatsoever, well its alright, he should be out of AP after 10-20 something bullets hit him... NOPE, enjoy your half dead merc
SHE'S EVIL. A DRIVEN BITCH!
I think you'll be fine if you start on novice difficulty. Play on regular 1.13 maps rather than AIMNAS or UC and with OCTH instead of NCTH. You should be able to pick it up pretty quickly. Ironman runs are more about abusing AI.
So how do new players approach it? Should I be savescumming, should I look up some information beforehand, or should I just die repeatedly until I figure things out?
depends on your definition of ironman, if i remember correctly the in game one just doesnt lets you save in combat, thats doable, you just have to assault a sector from the beginning
if you define ironman as no reload whatsoever, then no, its almost completly impossible
I recommend watching a Lets Play video or three (non blind) to figure out how it plays out, and what to do/where to go in the early game.
if you're doing 1.13 then yeah look up some shit.
While it's a fantastic mod, it's still a mod, and there will be issues.
I'd suggest you'd play base game at first desu
Just jump right into it. The only things you really need to do to keep your mercs alive is to control your firefights and avoid being outnumbered.
thepit.ja-galaxy-forum.com
go here for all the information you need
>looting after winning a massive defense mission in 1.13
>die repeatedly & savescumming
thats how i did it
bringing a expensive merc for his gun on the first helps a lot, since your biggest problem in the beginning is that everybody outranges you
alternatively you can do night attacks where range doesnt matter, but reflexes/interrupts does, that will teach you how interrupts/light/noise/spotting works
maybe we should fire a coupla rounds, just to let them know we are here
hitmans statline sucks, but damn sometime i just take him to hear his voice
go back to militatraining Ira, everybody hates you
As far as I remember original game almost doesn't explain anything, even stuff like character traits(or was it supposed to be in manual?). You are going to restart the game a couple of times anyway
i recommend jefmajors ironman run, that guy knows his shit
Yeah, there was a manual. A must for a new player, really.
I remember buying the game from a local store in 1999. My buddy got it too, but didn't read the manual, and was complaining his towns kept getting recaptured. Sucka didn't know about militia. RTFM!
>Jefmajors Ironman runs
I hope to god you're joking
you can rely on him to be amazing at Silent Hunter and IL2-Sturmovik
rest is fucking awful
is there any decent ja2 lets play? most i have seen either had either shitty commentary, or was slow as fuck, or spent 90% of his time organizing inventory
You got my ear!
nah he is awful at silenthunter as well, i liked his ja2 videos for the trainwreck it was, it had a constant "oh shit nigger what r u doin" thing going for it
I dunno, for me I watched PsamtikI's first few videos when I started (2nd playlist on YT) and it helped me a lot to get started.
I played it for the first time fairly recently and found it good but pretty tedious. Having to game the AI so hard because they can hit you with pistols from half a map away during the day is annoying.
It really loses steam for me once you've got the first few cities too.
>Not having Ahrnold in your team
STUPID FOOLS PUSH ME TOO FAR
GODDAMIT TO HELL
i always felt like he was kinda mandatory for starting out, only cheapo merc with with good mechanics to repair the guns you find to be able ot use them, but that atrocious wisdom jesusfuck
not sure where you shot those 10-20 rounds but if you were aiming for breath damage, i hope you were using HP rounds. personally, i just go for the legs if cases where i want to knockdown instead of going for torso shots trying to do breath damage
He hates Igor and Ivan, so fuck him
DEES EES IVAN DOLVICH
torso, i was trying to kill him, that seemed the best chance for burst, i think i had regular ammo since i was out of AP rounds. armor on enemies just seem better then on my own mercs
well he at least took come english lessons between 1 and 2
youtube.com
out of curiosity, which revision of 1.13 were you playing on?
It's always good to hear characters using other languages properly instead of simply putting a silly accent
If i recall correctly, elites have 10/20% or so damage reduction independent of worn armor. Anyway, go for AS Val or throwing knives.
I play the old Wildfire mod with redone maps before they just started to permanently go to XL maps for Wildifre because fuck you I'm the modder.
dunno it was 2 years ago i think, i just used the freshest 1.13. i think the covert-ops/disguise think was the new feature, but didnt seemed to work for me, so i just tried to play sneaky
hallo, zis is monika zondergard speaking,
go to sleep creep
covert ops is actually surprisingly powerful during daytime especially because it effectively reduces enemy sight distance to about 10 tiles until they see you shooting or raising your weapon at them. it wasn't really explained well but you can use disguises even without the skill trait. you just have to take out a knife and them attack any corpse. it'll give you a menu for decapitating (which is used for terrorists) or stripping their clothes. all you have to do is equip the clothes you stripped from a soldier to use a disguise
doesn't like Gumpy and Fox?
GET OUT
I never finished JA 2
But I also cant even remember how many games I started, simply because 1.13 is so damn great with creating your own group of mercs.
the way you describe it sounds like a free spotter for me, does anybody else shooting breaks the disguise?
why is gumpy so popular? i never understood that.. fox on the otherhand...
only the disguised character can break the disguise so if you have one disguised character running around an undisguised character and you come across and enemy, they will only shoot at the undisguised character
...
what about 7.62 high calibre?
that seems op, just set up a 2 sniper in a corner, an walk through the map, killing everythings your spy sees
also, in terms of using a silenced smg in lategame, i think you would've been pretty fucked to begin with since all of the smg calibers pretty much suck at that point if you aren't using AET rounds
tried it but couldnt get into it, that real time pause doesnt work well with firearms/fast combat, also the engine seemed godawful, 3D with none of the benefits of 3D and all the drawbacks
>Badass Veterans, racists, sexists
Can you imagine what today's industry would do with these? Strong independent non-normative transnigger womyn.
It's just one of those games that's a great concept, executed well and is absolutely full of content, with neat things to always discover, even if it isn't very helpful to playing the game.
>he doesn't start his team with Igor, MD, Barry and Grunty with a custom merc
>Sirtech
Tell me again why they went out of business.
>with neat things to always discover
>Bloodcats attack
>Alien queen
>all those prisons
>engine seemed godawful, 3D with none of the benefits of 3D and all the drawbacks
This so much, the level desing is horrible as well and doesn't really lend itself to interesting battles,
>that real time pause doesnt work well with firearms/fast combat
Can't agree with that, I think it is great specially in close combat where every second counts, but the game could have had some system where you could set up AI routines for you units, like shoot enemies on sight, so you don't have to pause all the time.
yeah i figured that much out on my own, shame cause i would love to see them&shotguns&handguns useful in the later parts of the game, not just assault rifles on everybody, an odd machinegun or sniper here and there
Although it's different enough to not appeal to every fan, I highly suggest everyone that likes JA2 to check out 7.62 high calibre.
I also mean small stuff that nobody really thinks about like being able to cut through wire fences with wire cutters or wearing sunglasses at night reducing your line of sight. It just adds to the feeling of a complete game for me.
Not to mention stuff like the robot, icecream truck or secret rocket-rifle facility.
>I also mean small stuff that nobody really thinks about like being able to cut through wire fences with wire cutters or wearing sunglasses at night reducing your line of sight. It just adds to the feeling of a complete game for me.
Marbles on the ground.
What fucking genius was at work here.
>no Hitman
Doin it wrong Ace
It's long story involving Neanderthals, waddling through chest high pile of dildos, sphincter monsters and that guy from mad max 2 that got his fingers cut when he tried to catch boomerang.
Only game to do female characters right.
Thanks, Brenda Romero.
It involves mismanagement, a crazy tranny that ends up in a mental hospital, and a guy who makes long winded shit posts about he's a descendant of neanderthals who will never finish his plus 20 year old game in the making.
What was the last non-bloated non-shit version of 1.13?
the latest version
Yeah, I saw the Cleveland Mark Blakemore rants, the ebay auctions of the Sirtech docs vindicating part of his story, and some of the legal docs regarding the Sirotech's attempt to snatch their IPs out from under the reach of the bankruptcy courts. I just never saw another side or an official history put together somewhere.
There were no shortage of fly by night publishers and devs in that era, but it is certainly odd for a long running company like that to just go up in a whisp of smoke.
