Personally I liked Zelda II better than the original (fite me) for whatever fucking reason, though I'd imagine it's mostly because I didn't get lost as much.

It's the most open-ended Zelda out there. The game isn't afraid of allowing you to do whatever you want including getting lost. It allows you to go places you probably aren't ready for and allows you to try to survive in those places. You can even play it swordless if you want. No other Zelda provides that level of freedom from the outset.
Props for Zelda II. It's a very close second to the original for me.

That's a good enough answer for me. I found myself surprised how much I liked Zelda II given how much it gets slammed or just entirely passed over. Same way I wound up liking Metroid II better than the first, despite the overwhelming indifference to it.

I think people pass on Zelda II because they refuse to understand it and refuse to understand its context. They dismiss it and call it a black sheep when later games in the series owe heavily to Zelda II. They are shocked that the game actually demands they develop skill instead of leading them by the nose.
I feel that's similar to Metroid and Metroid II. Metroid is my favorite Metroid for pretty much the same reasons as to why LoZ is my favorite Zelda.
