Which is just a Wizardry clone.

>Forgetting OFF

the most influential thing here is itoi's writing, so no.

in regards to op, undertale really actually rips off of cave story more than mother.

Is OFF really that good? I downloaded it but never got round to playing

It's sort of like The Desolate Hope in that I'd never call it good, but it's the sort of game that you'll probably remember for the rest of your life. There wasn't really anything else quite like it at the time, but playing it for the first time nowadays might take away some of the magic.

The less you know about the game going in, the more you'll enjoy it.

To be honest, I don't get the appeal. It has its moments, but it's very forgettable in general.

only good mother likes are off and lisa

>Will remember for rest of life
>Very forgettable

I'm getting strongly mixed messages here
Regardless will give it a go, thanks for the input

Just like DQ, which was an inspiration for MOTHER or "ripped off" if you want to be extreme, MOTHER is finally getting a bunch of shitty knock offs that miss the point, simply poetry.

Someone post the tweet of someone saying Earthbound is bad while Undertale is good.

It's a RPG game originally made in French back around 2006 inspired by Paranoia Agent youtube.com/watch?v=QtWJM25FwU0 and the likes.

It's a pretty alright game with good original tier soundtrack youtube.com/watch?v=-1EPegIzD2M , you can easily find the translated version anywhere on the internet.

>Someone
It was King Cuck himself Anthony Burch.

Both are great games desu senpai
But Mother 3 is better

Yeah, the whole game is super generic with awful combat but people suck its dick non-stop because of the twist at the end.

I was too stupid to understand the first puzzles.

Ya, it's a fun game with a neat setting for it's time but overall it's fairly forgettable in the long run. But some people grew up with it being their first taste of an RPG so it really resonates with them just some of us got into the genre before so it didn't have as big an impact.

It was before it's time, to be honest. I fucking guarantee you that Tooby and his other tard buddies didn't actually play it when it came out, they played it ten years later when they saw Ness in Smash and wondered where the fuck he came from. Then, without actually understanding the main messages of the Mother series, all of these devs had a light-bulb go off in their head at how much money they could milk off of the idea of a quirky modern day RPG full of modern day stereotypes and "meta-humor"

So yeah, it's influential. I don't know if that's a good thing though.

Get Knuckle Sandwich the fuck out of here that game is trash and I know you're the OP, Andrew.

Get rid of those fucking noses or don't publish that shit

>Mfw anyone can make and shill their games with shitty graphics

The point isn't the quality of the games user, it's that they cite Mother as a notable influence.

What does being good or not have to do with being inspired by mother?

Hope you're not including LISA in your post, friendo.

All those games and not a single good one.
It almost make you think that the source of inspiration itself might be shit.

>I fucking guarantee you that Tooby and his other tard buddies didn't actually play it when it came out, they played it ten years later when they saw Ness in Smash and wondered where the fuck he came from.

So did just about everyone else you fucking faggot. Did you play it when it came out?

Only relevant games on that list are Undertale and LISA.

>Lisa
>Not good

Which is just Digital Dungeons and Dragons

...

>be me making low resolution lite rpg
>mfw it's not inspired by earthbound in any way but the comparisons between it and Undertale are inevitable
i just wanna make a quasi-surrealist game about unchecked capitalism married with post-scarcity technology with callbacks to culture i enjoy and consume like no country for old men and bladerunner.

instead i have an inkling that the whole project will fall flat on it's face because cutesy low res graphics + any amount of humor + turn based combat (whether or not it's traditional CRPG combat like Wasteland or minigames) = Undertale derivative

just fuck my shit up now senpai

Yes, obviously those cheap/free indie games that can easily be pirated and often go on 80% sales are the work of the Jews, not the Denuvo protected $60 + tax + DLC + skins + Season Pass AAA productions

So it's Gingiva?

Which is just casual Chainmail.

Hey "not playing a game at release = you can't appreciate it" is a shitty argument. My main problem with these games are that their humor and emotional aspects are just done poorly. They are either like "haha this games is so weird XD" or think the mother series is some stupidly deep profound writing that we couldn't begin to understand. Its just a goofy little game series that has a few messages and touching moments.

I've never heard of Omori. Digging up the skinny on it now. Is it good?

Sounds like you're just projecting on the games to be honest.

far less surreal.

the surrealist elements are only made apparent if you pay attention. almost everything passes as literal.

you know its not that i care about it being dismissed as an undertale clone like i suspect it will be. i could give a rats ass because all i wanna do is make the game and express myself. i just want my kickstarter funded when i finally get around to launching it.

think space station 13 meets a sierra adventure game meets Wasteland

>frustrating or funny deaths
>frustrating deaths
>funny deaths
Whelp, hope it all works out for ya, you got a name for yo game?

Which is just fantasy edition of the Siege of Bodenburg

ive got a lot of shit for Cyberhive Tek. I even made an artsy video that i hope will make people intruigued

i really need to finish my presskit. i figure my best chances of being funded is to make a good presskit to match a good kickstarter, then spam and shill the presskit to every last gaming feeder blog and directly to gaming journalist sites.

>AC 0

are you using the crappy ADnD armor class system?

How so may I ask?

I'm using the system found in Mercenaries Spies and Private Eyes.

Final attack = (Attack - AC)D6

I dunno if that's ADnD, I just wanted a simple system that's easy to understand and implement. And considering the game started out as a Wasteland clone I just went with the already simple MSAPE formula

>Yume Nikki, the founding father of the Earthbound clone, not pictured
>posts Tumblr Nose: The Game, Hipster: The Game, and Mother 3 Assets with Cowboys: the Dead Kickstarter Shill

To be fair YN is not a rpg, definitely inspired by mother seeing as it has a mother themed world.

LISA's the only good game on that list, though Mother 4 is also shaping up to atleast look decent too.

Problem with almost everything else on that list is that it tries too hard to be Earthbound but with a different skin, and is full of forced quirky humor for the sake of quirky humor, unlike Earthbound, which's humor, albeit quirky, never felt forced.. Mother 4 gets a pass on this only because it's meant to be a tribute/fangame so it's expected that it would be unoriginal. The other games literally have no excuse to be what they are beyond devs just being lazy and cashing out on the Earthbound-clone hype train.

The only ones on that list that try to be different are LISA and YIIK, but YIIK looks like some fucking disgusting nu-male shit.

OFF, Space Funeral and Yume Nikki are really good too.

>Yume Nikki
>Mother-like

It's a mother-like but it's not an RPG lad. It's directly inspired by the surreal imagery you see through the Mother series' overworld.

Yume Nikki is the founding father of shit walking simulators.

>>You now realize earthbound is one of the most influential RPGs of the SNES era

for people that played with RPG maker well into adulthood, maybe.

>You now realize earthbound is one of the most influential RPGs of the SNES era
Influential in Indieshit, maybe.

Games like the SNES Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, the Breath of Fire games, and Secret of Mana were far more influential for gaming as a whole.

pretty much this. earthbound's humor had a distinct pop culture flavor and stuck with it, and didn't delve into lolsorandom. it's clones' humors have no binding themes and just throw together random unrelated jokes and trendy memes for the sake of being quirky. then there's lisa that's just outdated unfunny wrestling humor and edgy rape jokes.

People need to not call DQ a "wizardry clone" not because it's not inspired by wizardry but because it plays nothing like wizardry. It dispenses with a lot of mechanics that make Wizardry, Wizardry and thus loses most of the CRPG baggage and focuses more on the adventure/campaign aspect with limited control of progression and certain role-playing mechanics in favor of a more streamlined experience, a "light" RPG if you will. The reason why it's so influential is it moved game design in a direction away from more traditional mechanics and made it much more accessible to a wider audience. Whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion.

And Cave Story is the founding father of the low resolution retro art games, but like Yume Nikki, it's much better than the games that try to ape it.

Cave story looks pretty good though not counting the character sprites. The environments and bosses looked great.

>the SNES Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, the Breath of Fire games, and Secret of Mana

Literally all derivatives of earlier RPGs. The only thing influential in any of those games was the ATB from FFIV. Try again.

>and didn't delve into lolsorandom

I strongly disagree

me, top right

earthbound's humor was strange but never really random, it was largely referential to 60s, 70s, and 80s pop culture while making fun of america from a japanese point of view.

then you have garbage humor like undertales' with fucking tsunderplane.

I just beat Undertale yesterday, and I don't understand the hate for the game. It's humor really isn't that forced, and it there isn't a lot of "lolsorandom" stuff in it.

I think the fanbase has just really soured a lot of the people on the game. I know I was hesitant to play through it after knowing some really autistic people who took the love of the game way too far.

Ironically, a lot of people probably feel the same way about Mother because of the fanbase. No one in this thread should act like Mother's fanbase isn't just as autistic, Undertale's is just more vocal and newly formed, thus much louder and in your face.

And that's okay, I disagree with you.

From what I can tell people are just more generous with japanese indie games

I guess not directly interacting with the fandom is part of it

yeah I'm getting tired of all these people forgetting about Yume Nikke and instead creaming their pants over lisa and undertale. Lisa is fantastic but lets not forget where this trend started on pc

>earthbound's humor was strange
>but never really random

These sound like the same thing to me. It sounds to me like you're trying to justify why you find EB funny.

Do you not remember Mr. Saturn? The ducks? The dream sequence?

If you like the game, I'm guessing you would call things like this "quirky" but if you disliked it its "lolsorandum"

Mr. Saturn had a reason for being in the game though, they and their font are based on a drawing that Itoi's daughter drew when she was 3 years old, and the way they talked was based on the way she talked.

that sounds like something completeletly irrelevant to the actual game

I agree with that statement, but if you're saying that in opposition to Yume Nikki not being comparable to Cave Story, I'd disagree. Yes, Yume Nikki is low rez and at it's core it's a walking game, but it has a very imaginative construction and visual direction ("quirky" when it was just part of late 90s/early 00s Japanese image culture rather than something to be whored out in the West). It's visual fidelity is low because it's an RPG maker game where Cave Story was done by a dedicated professional programmer.

I don't have much against the game, and I'd probably enjoy it if I'd played it, but the fanbase consists of a lot of snowflake teens with OCs and Literal (as in literal) children, like my sister's boyfriend's daughter, who is incidentally also interested in 5 Nights at Freddy's and Minecraft. Gee, go figure.

Yeah, because for the most part they did it first. There aren't that many clones, and the ones that exist generally fall to the wayside. The doujin game scene in Japan isn't anywhere near as robust or capitalistic so you don't see shit like this coming out year after year. Even the stuff you see released at comiket is usually shooters, puzzle games, and VNs and they're not meant to have a large audience like Steam released titles (at least not initially anyway).

Not really. The writing and subject matter in Earthbound was largely based off of things in pop culture that Itoi enjoyed, or Itoi's life experiences, or how he saw the world growing up.

Mr. Saturn's based around a fictional character his daughter drew.

I actually felt YN looked pretty good, very unique and colorful. Yume nikki really impresses in how much unique art and animations there was.

how is any of that "random humor?"
what's wrong with a duck being an enemy?
sounds like you're just insecure

That doesn't make it random. That's called a personal touch, and it's the first part in making something distinctive. Perhaps you're not old enough to really know what "lolsorandumb" is but it came out of a very distinct style of idiocy born from 2000s teens especially on the internet.

is that yiik game going to pc?

A lot of the Undertale hate comes from the extreme fatigue that is typically associated with Sup Forums having way too many threads about it over an extended period of time. There is also the fact it has a large kiddie contingent on Youtube that shouts memes.

I probably shouldn't have used "visual fidelity" (which is a bit of a misnomer if we're talking about surrealism) as I was more referring to the graphical limitations and resolution since it came from RPG Maker 2003. It's all original art, which stands apart from most RPG Maker dreck of the era.

OP asked for SNES games, jackass.

>Flint nowhere to be seen

What the fuck

Top center hugging hinawa.

I don't see boney myself.

>lisa

literally a sjw meme game
pic related

I wasn't referring to the duct being an enemy. I was referring to how it randomly appears on the edges of some apps for no reason

I did not say if there is anything wrong with that. I find it funny and I have no need to justify that to anyone, unlike the person who I was replying to

...

'lolsorandun' has become a buzzword for 'humor that I personally don't find funny' apparently

this board's too young to remember starmen.net and general 00s nintendo autism

delete this

I like this style of game

Every time.

same, i'm looking forward to trying mother 4 in 2019

Indie games have a bit of an issue with wearing their inspirations on their sleeve.

AAA games have a bit of an issue with having any inspirations at all

Well they've got the same issue, it's just that their inspirations are fucking boring.

why?
