You want a person to have a sub-optimal first experience . So later IF they play it again, they will notice how shit has been fixed.
You are banking on a person not hating the mess that is unmodded stalker. Missing out on guns, immersion/atmosphere, mutants gfx, etc.
Then coming back to play it all over again with those things. Why not just recommend them the best experience first time round.

Seriously, if you tried to play vanilla CS and quit, try again with AO, it actually makes the game much more fun to play. It rebalances weapon drops and what weapons enemies use

Why do people hate the complete mod so much? I've played SoC both vanilla and with the complete mod and I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Fallout 2 had post release patch larger than the game itself because it was literally unbeatable due to bugs, and this was before widespread broadband internet.
