No white girl getting BBC
It wasn't Brutal Doom from the start.
ugly maps
City levels
>perfect game
>flaw
What did OP mean by this?
In 1994? you don't say.
the pit
Added chaingunners
Was just going to say that
I love the music, but those huge ass open levels were just ass
Not enough innovation from the first game
Doom 1 had better looking levels
Nothing, doom 2 is better than the original in every way possible.
Doom 64 had better level design
Doom was already a really good formula. The only thing they could have really done with it at the time was more maps and weapons.
The level design just wasn't really there. I can replay Ep1-3 in Ultimate Doom forever, but D2's levels just aren't as engaging. There's definitely some great ones in there, but also a lot of boring or mediocre ones.
It also would have been nice to have more weapons/monsters added.
>review
>Explicitly states that it's not a review and that he will not be doing a review several times
It's not HDoom
A lot of them feel like fan made levels. Like Barrels of fun.
Those stupid fucks who spit out Lost Souls.
Hate those guys. They're just annoying.
Doom 64 also has better level design than the first Doom
Did you read the reply tweet?
Downtown
How big is your wad folder, Sup Forums?
It's not Doom 1.
As big as my dick
not very big
Knee Deep in the Dead is the only Doom 1 episode with good level design. Episodes 2-4 have terrible levels.
4> 3> 1> 2
Well you're right that 2 is the worst, but you're wrong about everything else.
>Episodes 2-4 have terrible levels.
How so? Design wise they're pretty much the same except 1 doesn't use teleporters, and thematically they're appropriate. 1 is a base, 2 is a base with Hell infection, 3 is Hell, and 4 is Earth with a Hell infection.
The only problem I can see is the sporadic difficulty of Thy Flesh Consumed.
so by your statement you think 3 should be the best? that doesn't even make sense.
Pain Elementals.
I prefer the level design in Doom 1 too, but that's just me.
No, episode 1 was the best. 2 is the worst. 3 and 4 are both mediocre.
City levels only work in Build engine. Doom and Quake are perfect when they are interesing gaunlet chambers.
Plebs.
Elementals are not hard to kill or don't even pose a threat most the time, they are just plain fucking annoying.
Chaingunners it's another story. They are a threat but it's a good thing because the game would be fucking cakewalk otherwise.
I can't aim down the sights
I liked the map and episodes in Doom 1, you could see your progress after each level. Doom 2 doesn't have those and it's just level after level.
Not a huge thing, but I prefer Doom 1.
What have I told you about getting involved in a man's discussion little jimmy?
ah, so 1 > 4> 3> 2?
okay then.
That really stupid looking hair he has on the cover is a pretty huge flaw.
Only text chat never voice chat so I won't be called a squeaker.
try doing pistol starts. You will learn to hate pain elementals.
Especially on Barrels O Fun.
What a bullshit fucking level.
The graphics are bad, not cinematic enough
Its too gamy. Can't I just win through "feelings" rather than "skill"
OP said find a flaw, not a positive.
Blood is better
Levels are too non-linear.
...
>add some neat enemies and weapons
>let sandy make most of the levels
Monster Closets.
Oh. Nevermind, This.
/thread.
Unless we want to discuss HDoom?
Every single game Sandy made was either very good or at least sold very well.
Don't doubt Sandy.
Every level from The Factory onwards are boring slogs.
Chaingunners were a mistake.
> Romero, where are your levels?
> Sorry, I'm busy with being a rock star and producing Hexen
test
>make a boss
>it's a glorified hole in the wall
>i want short linear corridor levels
But I do
Should have just made a full sized version of this guy in 3D for D44M
>glorified hole
lewd
>pistol starts
You do realize they didn't actually design the levels to played that way, right?
I mean, it's cool that people can pull it off but it's bullshit to count it against the level design's over all quality.
>TNT
He may be no more than a texture map, but at least he changes things up. Every other DooM boss was just a bullet sponge with a top level gun. At least you had to do something different to take this guy down.
...
monster closets are bad now?
...
I think the reason a lot of people hate Icon of Sin nowdays is because mouse aiming basically kills the whole challenge of the boss, go play it with Chocolate Doom if you haven't played it already, then you might understand better that he was quite challenging back in the day
How the fuck could you like that literal "rooms scattered all over the place" level design
theyre bad when used as a staple and not a surprise
shiet, mine's only 6 gigs
what are some good ones you'd recommend? i'm currently playing through Alien TC but it's kinda boring.
The fact this guy can spawn Arch-Viles is absolute horseshit.
Doom 1 also had rooms scattered all over the place in Episode 3 and by some extent 2, but Doom 2 was just way too open, which made the enemy placement retarded and made me feel like half the time i was backtracking, instead of going through the level with both puzzles and enemies Doom 2 with it's chaingunners especially makes you feel like you need to clear out the enemies first out of the area then solve the puzzles.
Only E1's, and E4's.
waiting around the lift to lower is boring, a lot is up to rng with the monster spawns too. It's not fun.
>mfw trying to do the boss quickly before it spawns too much shit
>mfw it spawns a pain elemental, revenant and an Arch-vile
Should I play Marathon or Strife?
You rather he spawned Cyberdemons?
Marathon. Strife is shit.
you're not wrong i suppose, but using mouse aiming and just rocketing the shit out of him in three seconds is just plain funny when you consider it's the final boss
The Steam version is apparentally DOSbox, and DOSbox runs like shit.
Also the fucking level design is atrocious. Square buildings shit along a flat plane? Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Uses most of the assets from the first game and is overall shit out.
Icon of Sin is a shit boss, btw. Not that I really have a framework for a good FPS boss.
Marathons still pretty great, played it not too long ago.
LeChuck in Pirate doom is pretty good
pffft there's a BFG before you go through the portal, Cyberdemon can die in three or four well-placed shots, now if he spawned Spider Masterminds that would be some shit
I think Thy Flesh Consumed would be mega ass if they had chain gunners in Doom 1.
It's been a long time since I last played Doom.
I think it was 15 years ago on the PS1 when I last tried it.
The new Spider Master Mind is pretty legit.
Cyberdemons would be less terrible, because those don't revive dead monsters and have an attack that forces you to take cover.
>PS1 version
My god
is doom 64 actually good? am I being rused?
At least it wasn't the Farty2X or SNES version.
debatable
In Doom 4? Haven't played that one. Heard it's alright.
But then I heard the new Wolfenstein was alright and that had fucking forced stealth sections and moral choices, so fuck if I know.
It's the best Doom game
Back to Saturn X, both episode 1 and 2, one of the best megawads made. I'd suggest grabbing the ASTs for both Episodes from best-ever.org
Level design. Seriously, what the fuck are the levels supposed to even be? And why are they all so goddamn shit?
It's redeemed by the new enemies and the SSG though.
It's actually very good. It's the real Doom 3, even according to Doom 4 now.
If you try to fight the Icon of Sin in TNT with mouse aim and autoaim disabled its almost impossible.
Wolf New Order is miles better than Doom 4
And that was complete and utter garbage.
Fuck is it with stealth and games and waddling like you're fucking taking a shit?
