the whole item system is terrible. would've made more sense to collect coins to buy whatever you wanted, and then have an inventory system where you could stockpile powerups to use and swap out during a level.

final boss fight was dull and anti-climactic. It didn't use any skills or techniques or powers you learned from playing the game, it literally could have been any random fight. Even some of the koopa kids were more fun to fight.
it's still the best mario game ever made though, and probably wont ever be topped.
