The PS1 was Nintendo's creation that Sony took back after a failed business deal, involving Nintendo expecting better results from partnering with the Phillips CD-I.
The Nintendo 64 came out, using shitty cartridge-based technology and was hell to work on. Companies that stayed with Nintendo during this time can claim that.
With the Gamecube, a lot of them jumped shark back to Nintendo, since it had the best graphics and was the most popular for awhile, but once that baby's toy the Wii came out, a lot of companies didn't want to be held back by a shitty gimmick in development, plus the better graphics the other consoles had. The Wii U faced the same problem, and here we are.
