Basicly it's enhanced Shadow of Chernobyl with tons of new content, locations, vehicles, quests, weapons etc.
The engine got a nice overhaul too.

I liked Metro 2033 and Last Light, is Stalker similar? I've got Stalker Call of Pripyat on gog, I've never played a Stalker game, should I start with that, or should I pirate Shadows of Chernobyl? How close is it tied to the film Stalker, is it supposed to take place in the same universe?

Metro to Stalker is what Dark Messiah to Arx Fatalis - more cinematic and linear, way less depth, but way higher production values.

The vehicles work pretty well, unless you run into anomalies with them which will sometimes result in this Can't say much about quests since I've just goten to the bar, so far there were pretty standard "find stuff", "kill this guy", "get this weapon repaired" etc.
Rewards were pretty nice though.

I guess fun is an ok reason to put em in. it's just that the maps aren't that big anyways and it feels like anyone who thinks cars are a priority in Stalker doesn't get the games. I know they're somewhat popular with the fans though.

They are good to haul around loot between locations or go out scavanging.

Only flying cars are posted because they're the most entertaining to watch, it's when you drive into vortex anomaly.
Cars really helpful when you do backtracking or carrying mountains of loot in the trunk. Car is necessary in darkscape because it was intended to be played with car.
With strict weight limit of 60 they're lifesavers when you need to get from A to B without spending half an hour

Plus, don't you just hate it when every car is just some stupid prop? I don't even like to use the cars, but the knowledge that they actually "work" makes the game better. "Work" in quotes because, I mean, this isn't even the first webbum of a flying vehicle in STALKER.
