BoF5 is better.
Though it's much different than the other two, it's less JRPG and more of a mashup of dungeon crawler, Vagrant Story and the resource management of Resident Evil.

I love how all the different transportation methods allow for different battle types. The sand boat and the flying mech dragon. At the end of the day they were kinda shallow but they had heart put into them to make you go "Yeah, I'm driving a thing and can't fight like we usually do" and thats just priceless.

Sorta yeah. She could do that, but iirc she generally went first and could get a strike in and hit hard when she can do her gatling thing. Plus she was adept at general magic. She was multi-purpose enough at least to avoid being a pure white mage type.

While the first one has its fans, I think it is a lot more archaic than the others with higher random battle encounters and stretched-out fights thanks to animations. It also looks... really weird, like a SNES game with DS chibi fights.

I think Wild Arms 2 is a step up.

While this is true from a technical standpoint, WA2 suffers from a LOT of balance problems that the original didn't.
The original PSX version had an incredibly shoddy translation, even by 1998 standards, and the characters lose a lot of utility because fifteen fucking tools is way too many. As a result, most dungeons feel like one-off gimmicks rather than carefully crafted setpieces.

It's a matter of personal preference, I suppose. WA1 is more dated, but WA2 was always mediocre. So they end up being about the same level of quality nowadays.
