They're alright. There are like 17 by now so some of them are better than others. The better ones do have more robust gameplay which gets kinda hilarious when people play them for the girls and then get super mad when they lose.
Rorona Plus (don't get the original version, it's shit) is the best one to start with. Or you can play Sophie since it just came out, but I have no idea if it's good or not, since, y'know, it just came out. Hence the thread.

NISA has nothing to do with Atelier and hasn't in years.

Sophie is the start of a new trilogy. It comes out tomorrow and you can start out with that one. It's on PS4 and Vita.

Then good thing that Gust is owned by Koei Tecmo and the only thing that NISA does is handle the LEs for Gust games.

Yes, the Atelier series is actually really good if you like JRPG without the "save the world" plot forced down your throat every 5 seconds and prefer a much more mellow adventure with likeable characters. Alchemy is the central gameplay mechanic. You gather stuff and make bombs, weapons, healing items and other stuff with it. Battles are turn-based with enemy spacing so there are AoE attacks and bombs.

If you only have a PS3
Good entry points are either Atelier Rorona Plus (not Plus version is meh) or Atelier Ayesha. But if you don't really care about playing the Arland/Dusk trilogies from the first games you could just get whichever game you want.

If you have a PS4 you might as well skip all the other games and get Sophie.

There are a bunch of other Atelier games spread across systems and PS2 spin-offs like the Iris and Mana Khemia games, but from my experience those are either pretty expensive or rare. Emulating the Ar Tonelico games is recommended due to NIS having done a poor job with the translations and you don't want to pay for those.

I remember hearing Shallie Plus got a patch right after it released that cleaned up the framerate so it's not nearly as bad as the trailers.
