He led Blackwatch which was basically a different division of Overwatch that did the "dirty work".

He got tired of 76 getting all the praise so he basically burned everything to the ground.

He was an original member of Overwatch as Gabriel Reyes. When Overwatch was disbanded and blown up, he almost died or even did die and Mercy saved him. Except she fucked up and his cells are on a constant state of rapid degradation and regeneration and he has to suck the life out of people to stay alive.

It's really not that tragic. He used to co-run Overwtach with Soldier 76 but the public generally liked 76 more so he got jealous and created a schism within the group which caused a mini civil-war and ended up with them both blowing eachother up. Neither of them died, however, but Reaper's cells decay and grow at a rapid rate, meaning he is always decomposing and recomposing if that makes sense.

I feel like this character was made for the express purpose of making fun of people who play him.

It's better that way, a game shouldn't have to try so hard with a story and have it interfere with gameplay. It's a game with interesting character designs, straight forward mechanics and fun

Death from Darksiders 2

Born in LA, joined the same super soldier program as 76 and was the de facto strike commaner in the early/pre-Overwatch days. Morrison/76 was named the official strike commander and he was pissed, relegated to leading Blackwatch which did a lot of the work that Morrison wound up receiving praise for. They became bitter rivals, then all out enemies. He led a coup against Morrison which resulted in Overwatch's HQ in the Swiss Alps being blown up by some mystery super weapon. It's implied that 76 literally killed him, and Mercy managed to bring him back using some of her nanobiology trickery. Now he exists in a constant state of genetic decay/entropy where he must consume "souls" to survive.

Also he's edgy now.
