1.13 adds a lot of shit and ramps up the difficulty. Play vanilla for a bit.

Play vanilla first and then when you get sick of getting a pack of gum only from a guy who was shooting you with rifle, switch to 1.13.

Go capture other towns, take the SAM sites, train milita, send the Queen bitch flowers saying "Sorry for your loss".

1. Train militia with Ira
2. Find the pilot
3. Capture the SAM site near Drassen
4. Get new mercs and form 2 squads
5. Send Squad 1 to Alma
6. Send Squad 2 to do quests in San Mona and capture Chitzena

The mercs and their lines, but boy could you run yourself into a corner if you lost a couple and then were stuck with the poor ones.

I always loved the inventory management in this game and the sheer amount of guns you could get.

JA2 has a lot of gore, even rotting corpses.

I wanted to play this game once but then I read that after you've taken a certain piece/amount of land then a nearly infinite counterattack begins and you'll run out of ammo before you've shot all the baddies. Even that more soldiers spawn than there are people in Dressen.

Is that true?

At some point in development that was the case, but they disabled it.
You can enable it again in 1.13.

It's not so bad if you're prepared for it. It's just that on your first playthrough you probably won't be prepared for it.

Also, in 1.13 there's an option to turn off the counterattack if you're a pussy.

in vanilla, the Drassen counter-attack doesn't really happen
you might get the occasional standard 20-or-so attack

in 1.13 they enabled the counter-attack. depending on the difficulty, it'll be 60-80 soldiers that arrive quite short after taking over all of Drassen. it's doable if you savescum and/or use cheeky tactics

Not being able to window this game pissed me off

Installed it on an old-as-shit laptop, but the game did not or could not play as smooth as in these webms, and half the features of 1.13 didn't even work

Not really. It's only in the mod and it's like 1 full sector stack of elites, not infinite. With careful recon and ai exploiting it can be completely trivialised.

There's a fuckton of cool places to go. Desert prisons, alien bugs in the mines, you can go build a robot, recruit a serial killer into your team, go beat up some lions with your bare fists, go nuclear on bunch of retarded rednecks. I usually find cool stuff to do, unless until the Capital.

Well fuck, now I want to play it yet again. Can't decide between going solo+locals or squads of mercs tho. Can you start with mercs only, no mc? I don't think I ever tried.

Most likely it was, but ja2 modding history is complicated with some major projects and minor forks/branches/add-ons that more often than not end up as part of main 1.13 setup, sometimes disabled by default.

Igor and Blood. Both are cheap, have great agility, learn quickly, and get along with some of the game's best mercs.

Get someone who can swiftly train your militia, like Wolf or Raider.

the pilot is somewhere around drssen, talk to the locals they should give a general direction

when I installed this again I used the windowed mode trick and everything, but the strategic map interface is eternally grayed out and none of the features appear.

For instance, they don't have that retarded crouch-walk animation, and stealth actually works in JA2 (that's one of the worst things in FO Tactics), although it's not really viable until you get a few items first.

I think there is. In Vanilla they're always behind pillboxes, they don't move.

Drassen is pretty trivial when you realise it doesn't activate until you take the third sector.
You can just take the mine and the airport and then spend time buying weapons and training militia.

Vanilla JA2 is not that hard. I was able to steamroll through the game in a couple hours.

JA2 1.13 kicked my ass though even on the lowest difficulty.


Squad leader with grenade launcher and machine pistol is my favourite main character.

But still, those mercs are just as wacky as the JA2 ones.
