If you're referring to streams, there's not anything inherently wrong with it.

I think the last time I turned on a TV or even had TV actually bought was like 15 years ago, which was my background noise back then whenever I'm doing basically anything

I have lost the ability to just sit in silence and concentrate on the single task I have in front of me, I always need something happening in the background

Watching people play is superior to actually playing them by yourself, especially if the let's play has commentary.

By watching people play, you not only learn how to play the game, but you also pick up additional knowledge you can't normally obtain by just playing the game yourself.

For example, by watching someone play, you learn their techniques, how they deal with challenges and you might also learn about the player as a person and possibly learn new philosophies. You can also discover new music if the let's player decides to add in their own soundtrack. If the source is from a stream, or if you actively participate in the comments, you might even make a new friend.

Meanwhile, if you're playing by yourself you only learn about the game, and that's it. It might even prove to be even more time consuming and frustrating than actually watching someone play because you can't freely skip to different parts of the game like you can in a YouTube playlist. You might get stuck in a difficult part and spend hours on it, while the let's player most likely have dozens of seasoned veterans guiding him along the way if he's streaming.

Also it feels less lonely watching someone play than playing by yourself.

It's not "something happening in the background", for me at least, it sets a mood and provides atmosphere, usually complimenting whatever I'm doing, rather than having something of its own happening.
Like me playing a multiplayer game and some guy on the second screen going through MGS2, which I can look over to during downtime, maybe hear a decent joke here and there to give me a chuckle if I myself am having a terrible match/round/whatever

Not sure if that makes sense or if you can even relate, but that's how I see it for myself
