I've just finished the first game and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. A lot of people on Sup Forums said the the first game is lackluster compared to the sequel, so I went in with low expectations, but I enjoyed the result.
The game took me 22 hours to complete, so I'd say it was pretty short. Also, quite easy - did not have to grind even once. And money was easy to earn through the dice game, always betting twice the amount of your winnings.
I enjoyed the story, I was expecting something a lot more bare-bones, but the characters were flashed-out enough and I'm a sucker for political undertones in a plot. Glad it didn't end up with some demon manipulating the events from behind the curtain, it was all a human struggle to the very end.
I might begin the sequel today. Any tips?
Also, pic related is from the manual. I only read it after finishing the game and I was surprised to see how old the main characters were. I was pretty sure they were teenagers, like in most other jRPGs.

Bro you are ten years too late.

>An rpg where the characters are older than me
I didn't realize how refreshing this would feel.
Austin Collins
Not all of us were born in in time to play it on release day... And I'm sure there are people on Sup Forums who don't shy away from good games just because they're old.
Also, lewd.

Suikoden II is my GOAT
III is very divisive amongst fans. The story is good and a good wrap up to most of the events that have happened in the series, but then teases other shit that never comes to fruition. Some people also dislike the >1 hero system.
3 has some unique systems in place like being able to level individual skills on a character. Swing is a great skill because it gets you extra hits. I'd recommend levelling it whenever you can. Mounts are also very strong.
Every area has a "local boss" that you have a small chance of encountering. You'll noticed a white fade out instead of a black one with different music. Usually these guys drop extra money and better items.

Thanks, I'll save your tips to a notepad file. Not sure when I'll be playing the third game, tho. Might want to take a break from Suikoden after I'm done with the second game.

Not sure how much you knew about the Suikoden series prior to playing the game.
Suikoden 2 does improve on a lot of aspects and allows you to transfer your data to alter some of the scenes based on decisions you had made in the first game.
I don't want to spoil too much about the game for you, but if you like Clive (the gun guy from the first game), make sure to play the game twice because you're most certainly not going to enjoy the main story to the fullest and his story simultaneously, especially if you like exploring and grinding.
Other than that, you picked a good series and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Ill be here awhile if you want to ask more questions before you start, so feel free to ask.
Carson Gonzalez
Yeah, I'm aware that you can import saved games.
I used Clive for a while in the first game, but there was pretty much nothing said about him, so he remained a mystery to me. When you say play the game twice, you mean Suikoden 2, right?
Other than that, I am not sure what to expect from the sequel, so I don't really have any specific questions at this time, but I appreciate you wanting to help out.

Not him but,
Clive essentially has a speed-run incentive built into him. You have to reach certain areas in the game by a certain time with him in your party. Miss one area and you fuck up the whole thing.
It's really intense so you should probably run it the second time just for that. But I'd also recommend 3rd and 4th times. Even 5th if you want. There's so much stuff to do and so much alternate content you can't get in a single playthrough.. And there are some glitches that make getting a perfect game without doing specific actions impossible (such as the recipe glitch).
Hell I've beaten it over 50 times myself.
Also a good tip s2 is early on you'll get to a place where you fight groups of white rabbits with axes. Farm them for a bit to get double-beat runes- these allow your character to attack twice. Also sometimes Muse carries Fury runes.
Sometimes areas in S2 become available at the weirdest times or are available from the start without telling you, so be sure to explore towns after every big event.

*He* did nothing wrong.

What user said. Not sure if you'd want to invest in that many playthroughs (although I can definitely say that I have), but Clive is very rough to complete his quest progression. In particular, I brought him coincidentally on my first play to a specific town and was told that I was around 200 days too late to complete his quest.

Thanks!

I have an addendum to help save you time and streamline the game more.
In 2 when you get your castle/shop-keepers-by talking to them- you get the ability to buy armor/runes and equip them on any battle character you've recruited- even if they're not currently in your party.
This means you don't have to switch characters in and out to grab runes or special armor off of them. You can also use the "strip" command in the vault to remove any character's armor.
I didn't figure this out until my 3 playthrough and it made everything so much easier. v

Thanks, this is exactly what I missed in Suikoden. Glad you told me, I might've not even bothered to check if the sequel implemented this feature.

Farm cutrabbits for a handful of double beat runes, make recruiting Richmond a large priority so you can get other dudes.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME AT YOUR HOUSE EXAMINE THE TREE OUT BACK UNTIL YOU RECRUIT A CHARACTER
Caps for emphasis, it'll save you a shitload of time.
Kayden James
You don't just examine the tree. You examine it, walk around it counterclockwise 3 times, then re-examine it.
Also check the vases in your house and check all the furniture in your father's bedroom for a collectible item.
Hudson Fisher
Nah you can just examine it, Just played through the games again within the last month. You just walk up to it and examine it 3 times then it auto walks you around the tree.
Carson Sanchez
Suikoden 2 takes all the good aspects of the first game and improves upon them. It also fixes a number of problems from the first game (like the inventory system)
It's a rock solid JRPG and you'll have a ton of fun with it
Owen Lee
Are stat gains random? Is there a danger of being extremely unlucky and gimping your characters?
Andrew Davis
I don't remember but I wouldn't worry too much.
Jaxson Wilson
the game is really easy so don't worry about it
Jackson Smith
I want to say that I remember it being semi-random but it's nowhere near Fire Emblem bad. You shouldn't have any characters that are crippled as a result of bad RNG.
Jaxson Thompson
Fire Emblem is the exact reason I'm asking, actually.
