Sadly, there is no game out there similar to Daggerfall. The closest would be TES Arena and Ultima Underground, but they play way worse.

Arena and Daggerfall were dungeon crawlers, not open world adventure games with rpg elements. They're nothing alike.

I just play it vanilla. I think on the Elder Scrolls wiki there's a package with it already set up in DOSbox to run on modern machines.

Also, why did you get it on GOG? It's available for free legally.

Is there a way to improve the performance, though? That's literally the one thing that puts me off.

Buy Elder Scrolls: Battlespire for $1.97 and they throw in Arena and Daggerfall, all patched up and ready to play with a click for free.

Same with buying Redguard or Morrowind. Buy any Elder Scrolls title and they give you those for free. They don't even sell them stand alone.

You've got that mixed up. It's Hexen: Beyond Heretic. And neither Heretic nor Hexen are like Daggerfall. They're Doom games with magic instead of guns (and in Hexen's case, a bunch of annoying puzzles and tedious backtracking).

Try out The Quest. Just put it on steam, was originally an Ios game. Really fun, tons of content.
