What rogue games have the most bullshit mechanics?
Post yfw monster house.
>GBA mystery dungeon
>Ryolu
something here doesn't add up
>What is petrify orb?
Skorupi's in there too
Are you sure it's not Explorers
only MD game I played was Etrian and it was the most disappointed I've ever been. It ran like shit, looked like shit and didn't have 1/4 of the features that made etria fun. Maybe pokemon is better but it cant be by much.
>Rotom mission
>Come join me in my tea party
...
Fuck that game.
Almost every roguelike have monster houses you fucking retard
This. It's free EXP.
Monster nests aren't that big a deal.
The most bullshit one I can think of offhand is being a follower of Xom in Crawl.
What does that do?
Man Fuck that game so hard I was stuck on lugias tower and never beat it with my level 85 Pokemon.
is Super a good game?
need something to play on it while waiting for SMT4: Apocalypse
rogue?
as in roguelikes?
how are monster houses more bullshit than literally everything in nethack
touch a basilisk corpse? dead
wore un-id amulet? ammy of strangulation ded
so much bs
Yes.
Monster houses are nowhere near as bad as a bad monster vault in ADOM.
In shiren the wanderer, dragon can breath fire for fixed damage
Rank 1 dragon can only hit you if you are in their line of visione
Rank 2 dragon can only hit you if you are in the same room
Rank 3 dragon can hit you from anywhere on the floor, that means if there is a rank 3 dragon he will breath fire every 5-10 turns and will completly wreck your shit, without you ever seeing the dragon in the first place
monster houses are small time, try the level 5 dungeons loaded with Bellossoms doing screen attacks.
...
I liked it, but it's easier than the previous games and the plot is really similiar too so honestly the previous games were better
Azure Dreams has that same mechanic, although it's "Monster Dens"
If you haven't played it, I highly recommend it.
It was a great game
Most people are mixed.
It's definitely the hardest because it involves bigger floors, hunger is more punishing, and there's new things like enemies evolve after defeating a partner. There is an end state though because you recruit through jobs and you can't repeat them. You also get locked out of using most pokemon until later levels due to cooldowns, which pissed people off.
It has the worst story other than adventure squad, but my favourite story is from GTI so what do I know.
I still like it. Best gameplay in the series otherwise.
Xom will randomly perform actions whenever the fuck he feels like it.
These can be good such as buffs, summon help, polymorph you into something stronger for a short time, polymorph enemies in to something weaker and other such effects.
Or neutral harmless stuff like alter the area you're in to something silly, or make you spray harmless foam that doesn't do anything.
Or he'll do bad stuff. Like summon shit out of your league, randomly debuff you, banish you to the Abyss, teleport you around the dungeon (including into a monster nest or even into a wall which is an instant kill), polymorph nearby enemies into harder enemies, and even trolly shit like moving the stairs away from you as you draw near.
So literally at any step you could be instantly be fucked by RNG.
NetHack is fair, though, a veteran player can ascend most of the time without any sort of grind, just going doing the dungeon (and then up).
And while I don't play it at "expert" level so I wouldn't know if it can be ascended in reliably as well, Slash'EM is certainly a direct upgrade in terms of how many ways there is to die, as the name kinda implies (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack, Extended Magic... and most of those things added involve a way to die).
I bounced off of it super hard. Everything takes forever to kill and attacks don't do a lot of damage, you run out of PP incredibly quickly.
I liked the old ones though
ways to exploit the game don't come until much later, items are more important than ever, early dungeons have 1 hit kill room attacks, floors are big enough that you will actually manage to starve, enemies evolving is more bullshit than ever and is basically an instant reset/failure, mega evolution is a double-edged sword that will end in wiping your party 50% of the time
>worst story
That goes to Rescue Team. The fugitive arc wasn't enough to save it for me.
>GTI best story
I don't think too many people will dispute this. The game itself wasn't the greatest, but the story and soundtrack were indeed really good.
>food items in elder scrolls.jpg
>Dungeons of Dredmor
>Zoo room
>Walk out of that a renewed Vacationer with plenty of stuff to mount on my wall when I get home
You are exploring a dungeon when this guy Unburdens over and slaps your partner's ass, what do?
IVAN in general is pretty BS, i can't even beat it with cheating for infinite reviving because the game will just kill-lock you
>easier than the previous games
What? I found it harder. Am I that bad?
That bitch is dead, abort mission. Drifblim is the Madara Uchiha of PMD.
kind want replay chocobo dungeon 2 in psp seeing this pic.
Weird, a very relevant thread to something I was just wondering
I played Mystery Dungeon Red a long time ago and remembered enjoying it a lot. Just today I started Explorers of Sky on an emulator and plyed a few hours. Made it to the part where you find the big gem in the waterfall cave. It hasn't really gripped me yet, though.
Does it get better? I still like the core gameplay loop, but it doesn't seem to have tons of depth yet. I started with Pikachu and Vulpix if that matters at all
Oh no, he was a Drifloon
Use Agility.
Not him, but you probably weren't using your items to their full potential. The game would have been more difficult if items were more scarce, but any lack of strength stat-wise can easily be made up wath items.
agility stopped being broken since gates, bro
Don't you mean a Drifl000n
How's post-game going?
Don't mind me, just going to 1 shot your team off-screen and teleport away
>not picking Fennekin/Charmander
>not tutoring Heat Wave
They're cute AND deadly.
Wave my stay away wand and walk away.
RAZOR WIND!
I never got this meme, they weren't as annoying as I expected them to be.
They're still pretty bad, but the wind up definitely takes some of the edge off.
I love how SC reused assets for these games multiple times
At least form RT to Explorers fixed the colors.
>multi-hit moves in Super
FUCK YOU
I mean, they even do it across different Mystery Dungeon series. Shiren and Pokemon use the same sound effects for certain actions, for example.
This is actually a very easy roguelike. I mean, it was made for children, after all.
I enjoyed it quite a lot. The sprites were serviceable enough and I never ran into any problems playing it.
I'd be more interested in these games if most evolutions weren't in the post game content
Any pure roguelike.
>Crawl
Is the game good? It looks interesting
I think so, yeah.
Huh, I didn't know that. That is funny.
I don't know why they're so stubborn about that. It was worked into the story of Super but in the other games I don't know, any Pokémon could have filled those roles. They probably didn't want to do all the emotion portraits for all those Pokémon, but they started doing it in Super so maybe pre-postgame evolution might be possible in a later game.
But c'mon, don't you want to be cute forever?
Attacks that hit everything in the room In giant rooms.
Fucking razor wind at the start of super mystery dungeon.
>Monster Zoo in the second level
>fucking Ghost shit teleports through a wall to another section of the dungeon more than 10 rooms away therefore making it unclearable because the little shit is just going to teleport more and more
And I also got sent from a Strange dimension into an island with no way out and plenty of enemies to snipe me.
>Not begin a HoMO of Xom
Xom is not even that bad most of the time.
Tactical Takedown with rocks from afar, that's why I keep'em.
I liked it mostly, except that the exp balance was seriously fucked up. For example enemies in Hidden Land gave you approx 300 xp if I remember, but in Primordial Forest it was barely 100. I wasn't very fond of that.
Victory is mine
boy do i have some bullshit pmd stories
>pokemon red rescue team
>start expodition at the volcano place
>first room i spawn in on the first floor was a monster house
>i die from immense rape immediately
>still red rescue team
>same place around the 5-10th floor
>go to a wide open room
>almost EVERYWHERE was traps on every square tile
>barely survive as all my reviver seeds and food were demolished
>explorers of time
>save up reviver seeds throughout the whole game
>get to final area of the game
>quickly take out all reviver seeds i had
>lose one thanks to some bullshit i cant remember
>try to reset
>the game autosaved and erased all my items, including all the reviver seeds i stockpiled for the final boss
>never played it again
>super mystery dungeon
>going through an expedition just fine
>suddenly walk into a monster house
>no orbs
>no useful wands
>no AOE moves
>try running away
>the moment i move an omastar uses hydro pump and kills off my entire team AND expedition pokemon
>three reviver seeds chewed up
>another one uses hydro pump again
>all reviver seeds eaten up
>went to options and quit game immediately
No pokemon game has the right to be so frustrating
>dude let's add a monster that constantly damages you and specifically only you from across the whole level
>and does this as soon as you enter the level without even needing to detect you
>also how close it is to the staircase is completely random
>ALSO get this, get this, it also shatters all glass bottles in your inventory so throughout the whole goddamn game you have to collect empty cans to put your potions inside, and you need to replace your lantern with a flaming sword or whatever retarded glowing item you may or may not find, all specifically for this level!
FUCK
YOU
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The best strategy is to use a scroll of detect material to detect "enner beast flesh" and zap a wand of fireball in the general direction which is a fucking crapshoot
GODDAMN THIS ASSHOLE MAKES ME SO MAD
ALSO THERE'S A CHANCE TO TELEPORT YOU TO THIS LEVEL ANYTIME YOU DRINK FROM A FOUNTAIN AND YOU PROBABLY WON'T MAKE IT BACK BEFORE YOU DIE FROM THE LEVELWIDE AOE WHOOPS ALL YOUR POTIONS ARE GONE BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH EMPTY GODDAMN CANS
FUCK YOU
>Gates to Infinity
>Better than anything
shit taste my man
Fucking elona, fucking slimes
THATS SOME NICE GEAR YOU GOT WOULD BE A SHAME IF I WERE TO SPIT ACID ON IT AND COST YOUR ENTIRE BANK ACCOUNT TO REPAIR
This isn't much comfort, but you can avoid the autosave by reseting before advancing from the 'You/your partner was defeated!' text.
> mystery dungeon games are rogue
Are you me?
No you're not. Get a fucking machine gun.[/spoiler ]
>slimes
>not quicklings
Nothing like getting pelted by 50 arrows every step you take and not being able to ever hit it because it's so quick, atleast they make god tier pets
I wanted to like it, because so many people say it's so great, but it just isn't as fun as Explorers of Sky, which I find myself returning to more.
Probably just cause I need to getgud, but it's way too punishing and restricting, for my tastes.
Throw a dye on them. Problem solved.
> not going for platinum bell pets
I hear it's MUCH more linear as in you can't really grind like in old games, revisiting dungeons to get cool items and such is that true?
At least you can acidproof your equipment for them. Meanwhile this thing.
>Explodes on you for massive damage
>They can multiply and set each other off
>They can fucking grab you if they see you
Have fun when you open a door with a room full of them, get grabbed, and watch 20 explosions that killed you with just the second one.
Been a while since I've played but what does dye do when thrown, I thought it just acted like an acid potion
You can just petrify those niggas.
The last time I went through DCSS elven halls it took a solid couple minutes of kiting with dragon call to clear the last floor. And I still got Abyssed.
>Not getting infinite doll as pets
You know, you can get infinite artifacts.
>It's a monster house!
>the monster house music starts playing
Stuff of nightmares.
Nah, poison. It takes effect on every tick they move tho. So they literally just die in 1-2 of your turns.
Acts like poison.
They die in one turn of yours.
Shit that sounds brutal are they only in south tyris?
>"I told him to doomsday the whole party and he actually did the absolute madman!"
...
Level-scaled, I think. Tbh there's worse things when you encounter them.
Level 40-50 dungeons if I remember correctly
...
Gentlemen
You can't grind levels during the story, but you can grind items via Pelipper Island, which is much more important in Super. After the story you can grind EXP all you want.
You get most of the good items on the first go in treasure dungeons, so no more grinding ZIS for that Tight Belt (which is an improvement imo but feel free to disagree). It's because these items are now one goal of the post-game instead of just being there.
Infinite missions are gone but you can still go into dungeons without them (though there's really no point unless you like the gameplay THAT much). And recruits escluding you and your partner have cooldowns but it gets less common the higher level you are. It never fully goes away, unfortunately.
>altaria's natural cure activated!
>altaria used refresh!
World Tree can eat a dick
>It's a "the Collector suddenly appears" episode
Aren't they in that "protect the army" quest? If so those seemed kinda KINDA easy I mean sure they hit fucking hard but they go down easily
Is PKMD Explorers of Sky the same story as Explorers of Time and Darkness? If yes, then yes play it through it get gud
Bomb throwers.
Like rock throwers but with grenades.
Makes you resurrect your buddies everytime.
Also, you should try Golem/Monk build. Pretty awesome.
>Die in submerged cave
>get my team of lv 50s to try and rescue myself
>1 floor away
>seadra used hydro pump!
>lose 2 of my 3 team
>seadra has evolved into kingdra!
>kingdra used Hydro pump!
submerged cave was where I realized hydro pump is a bitch
Started SPMD today, team is Treecko and Cute~ Fennekin. At the "climbing mountain to second town" part. Am I fucked, or are those two good pokes for rest of game? No spoiler pls.
