I'm in my 30s, and never understood the hype surrounding HL.

First game was noted for being more "interactive" than other shooters, having NPCs walking around etc. Then it turned into a mediocre shooter. Second was touted for more of the same but mainly for the graphics. Again, tuned out to be a mediocre shooter with terrible gunplay.

Snake in Smash Bros Brawl was an even bigger impact from the audience. And FFVII remake didn't shock me at all. They had been hinting at it for years. And after FFXIV fiasco and how long FFXV was taking, it was just basic logic to take their most hype game and milk it more.

The correct answer is FF never had a peak. Its been stuck in a valley for its entire run, always looking up at series like Chrono, Dragon Quest and Suikoden which rose above it.

And ever since FFVII, Final Fantasy has been stuck in the Uncanney Valley
