from time to time i keep thinking about this game. it really was great and i usually hat these kind of games, final fantasy and the like. but last remnant was really interesting desu
I've been in the process of replaying it recently since I have a shift at work where I basically sit in a room and play on my computer for 12 hours every friday.
When you use the wiki to make sense of all the hidden and unexplained game mechanics things are a lot clearer. I've still fucked up a bunch of my soldiers who ended up as legendary scouts like Lord David but his super moves are just too cool for me to bench him.
here.
I never played Last Remnant, but i remember people praising and bashing it at the same time because of its unconventional take on the jrpg genre.
Is it worth checking out for a somewhat casual jrpg fan?

Yes, its a damn good game despite its shortcomings. It really tried to innovate and do things differently from other JRPGs. For instance making the turn based combat slightly more tactical where you control a small army instead of just a few dudes and give commands to squads instead of individual units, this was an effort to justify why the game had turn based combat at all instead of just shrugging and saying ITS A JRPG OF COURSE ITS TURN BASED. It has a good sense of exploration and like FF12 focused on large open areas and big towns instead of FF13's hallways. There is a TON of sidequests and cities that have nothing to do with the main story, I'd say probably around 60-70% of the game is in the optional content (though you'll have to do a decent chunk of it to level up your army or your dudes will get creamed in the story missions).
The problem was that not all of the ideas really worked, it had a soft level scaling system called battle rank where the more you fight the stronger enemies become. In theory your strength will increase faster than the enemies but you will never get so far ahead that you can just walk right over them. But the Xbox 360 version was clearly shoved out the door and the BR system was unfinished, grinding actually caused enemies to become far, FAR, more powerful than intended and could actually make the game unwinnable. It also had a lot of graphical glitches that were annoying but did not interfere with the turn based gameplay (like xcom2) they took over 6 months from the 360 launch to port it over to PC.
Anyway enough rambling, yes its a damn good game and I very strongly recommend it. I could stream some for you if you'd like.
You only need one word for that one.
