One of the key things evident from Death Stranding’s E3 2016 reveal trailer is “the idea of life and death being connected to each other,” according to Kojima. “Animals are connected with each other, people are connected to each other, so many things are connected,” Kojima tells IGN. But it’s a short story by Kobo Abe that Kojima points to as a way to explain one of Death Stranding’s strongest themes.
“In this short story, Abe states that the first tool mankind created is a stick,” Kojima tells IGN. “He states that the stick is the first tool that mankind created to put distance between himself and bad things — to protect himself. He states that the second tool mankind created is a rope. A rope is a tool used to secure things that are important to you.” Kojima points to the umbilical cord in the trailer, and the rope-like “umbilical cords” hanging from the actual title of the game.
“Most of your tools in action games are sticks,” Kojima continues. “You punch or you shoot or you kick. The communication is always through these ‘sticks.’ In [Death Stranding], I want people to be connected not through sticks, but through what would be the equivalent of ropes… But of course you will be able to use the sticks too.” How this idea manifests in-game remains to be seen, but Kojima says there are other “small things and small messages” hidden in the Death Stranding trailer.
WHAT's the hidden message!?
Xavier Johnson
PAM PARAM, PAM PAM PARAM
Andrew Edwards
what the fuck is kojima even on right now
Joseph Martin
The hidden message will be flaunted in plain sight. Then degenerates who think vidya are art can have a brief moment of pseudo intelligence
Gavin Campbell
Death Stick
Joseph Thomas
What is he saying? What the fuck? Just make a game you over hyped meme
Ryder Rogers
>WHAT's the hidden message!? He's unchained from Konami but is now chained to Sony. Making his new dream forced to be a VR compatible.
Anthony Bennett
>you now see that Konami did nothing wrong please let them reimprison him
Camden King
I guess that explains why his games are just movies now.
Alexander Diaz
Dust from my PS4
Hunter Morgan
oh great another walking simulator with long shitty cut scenes.
Austin Cook
go play nintendo or something
games are for adults now.
Eli Murphy
Eh he he
Ayden Long
So its confirmed that Kojima is a madman?
Kevin Bailey
>hidden message
this guy literally cannot stop making ruses
Nolan Campbell
Lol first Kojima ruins his own franchise so hard it becomes a slot machine and now this. What a hack.
David Ramirez
So is he going to release a pretentious indie hipster tier game at full price?
Connor Cook
Subtle
He is a small guy, but that silhouette stands out in a big way
Luis Wright
Stop boogeymanning, we're discussing Death Stranding. There was no gameplay shown and what Kojima is saying is vague as fuck and doesn't make any sense.
Connor Gonzalez
too bad kojima hasn't been connected to his audience in years
Landon Clark
It all depends on how you actually talk about it in person. Kojima seams like he's just trying to explain his strategy for his 'ideas'.
Now if you heard a tumblr hipster turd say any of that, immediately you would be irritated.
Either way Kojima has finally made it to the top and can do what ever the fuck he wants, Either way it's all made us interested.
Wyatt Hughes
I think he's just baiting user.
Noah Bennett
He did it for a demo that was better than the game it advertised
Jackson Sanchez
Will this game have more or less gameplay than, say, MGS3?
Joshua Richardson
I like reading these things. Kojima is super cute and explains things like he's a friendly old man who lives next door. I can't wait to drape my ropes all over everyone in Kojima's new game.
Justin Wood
the lalilulelo!?
Michael Thomas
the models in the sky look like this
Dominic Myers
>Kojima has finally made it to the top
There was a time Kojima was known for making good games
Wyatt Hughes
>Chained to sony Kojima's studio is completely independent. Sony just contracted him first since Koji is friends with Andrew House. Granted, if the money and conditions are good, I can see him becoming a first party developer for sony. But as it stands,he's a free man and actually happy for once
Benjamin Perry
>I can see him becoming a first party developer for sony
I can't see a guy who feels he belongs in film intentionally limiting his audience in the long term.
Ayden Nelson
>This is what Kojima creates when he's unbound To be honest, i want to see more. The madness this man offers the world is impressive.
Owen Thomas
No, you just have kojima dick too deep in your ass its gonna be as shitty walking simulator
Luis Wilson
>when Kojima is smarter than Sup Forums
Jaxon Richardson
>Literally no gameplay footage whatsoever, Kojima's statement about the gameplay is so vague he might as well have not said anything >The teaser is 3deep5u thing that won't even be related to the game Why even get hyped over this right now? At least wait till you know something about the game. >Muh Kojima ruse curise
Jackson Carter
that ain't madness.
btw notice that kojima has obviously seen this video.
shit is so weird. I was thinking about this video over and over recnetly and showing it to people, then the stranding trailer came out
Ian Williams
boogeymanning?
games have complex themes now. sorry. ever read moby dick? infinitely harder to understand than what kojima has just said about his game.
he is illustrating the themes his game is meant to explore, and showing how those themes are simplistically conveyed in the trailer which announced the game. why is the user i responded to so incredulous and confused? i am not baiting.
Jayden Bennett
this is literally gonna be the evangelion of video games
Andrew Johnson
Sticks: He's talking about tools that people use to try and control their outcome based on a 'outside' situation. Phones, Guns, Arms/Hands ect.
Ropes: Internet, People, Ways we meet end up meeting, Communicating and being apart of their lives ect.
He could be looking on how to build gameplay that has the character impacting more than just hitting targets or hunting objectives.
From what i understand, It sounds like he basically wants to create something almost entirely new in videogames.
Or either he's just trying to figure out a clever story in a game that might ultimately be a 3rd person adventure with some really weird themes.
I'm fine with either of those.
Aaron Sullivan
Kino.
Bentley Phillips
Thanks again for your input for the 500th fucking time.
Jaxon Peterson
A string is used as a necklace to secure what appears to be usb sticks around his neck, referring to how important memory is in this world, perhaps he's been brain-wiped or suffers from the ol' amnesia.
Parker Perez
reminder
Leo Price
True, but even if he did his gabs will follow him to the ends of the earth >case in point: Guillermo Del Toro Surprised he wasn't part of the reveal demo, but Im sure he has a part with the actual game
Christian Jackson
>tfw a multi millionaire game producer is too washed up to think of a second half of his game but knows his fans are retarded enough to buy it anyway
Blake Nelson
Split from Konami made him snap.
Oliver Russell
The points about gameplay really aren't vague at all, just his statement about other things hidden in the trailer. It's going to be a game primarily of securing things precious to you to protect them instead of attacking things trying tti take your precious things. A pacifistic Last of Us is what he's going for.
Bentley Carter
My god, the pseudo intellectualism in this thread is nauseating. But that is what you get with the kojima "games"
Logan Young
He is trying too hard to be 2deep4u. Hype is over right here
Carson Carter
He may as well be first party, he exclusively makes everything for Sony. It's obvious he wants to be apart of that company.
Oliver Collins
I started involuntary laughing as I read that second post. My nigga Kojimbo stay smoking that good kush
Nathaniel Foster
DT is just a tech demo like GZ, the main game is something else.
Blake Jackson
No, it was probably Konami that kept him calm and inline. He has always been a weird fuck. Giving him full creative freedom is a big mistake.
Blake Turner
answer this question
how do you make a player's life be valuable in a video game
video games like DayZ for instance, because they are free for all, are ruined by everyone just killing each other. In the real world you would never just kill a useful person, you could make them a slave, make them an ally, learn from them, ransom them etc
So how do you make the player's life have some concept of value? This is something I have thought hard on, and I think it's a question he will try to answer with this game
Colton Murphy
>but Im sure he has a part with the actual game
doubt it, guy has a full slate coming up. i don't see his influence in death stranding at all. the trailer looks, to me, like a hideo kojima directed piece
Jason Lopez
Sticks are like........ symbols of humanity man. *inhales that sweet 420 shit* AAAAHHHHHH you just don't understand Sup Forums, you're too hold on *grabs crack pipe* too stupid to understand.
Levi Lewis
So basically an escort mission?
Parker Wood
games will always try to answer this in unique games
i remember an iphone game (there was a flash game like this too) where the whole game is permadeath, no "new game" button. you obviously can delete your cookies or whatever but it's hard enough that for many people, your character is straight up dead. undertale explores stakes like this.
Eli Morales
it's true though. Abbo's story makes sense.
Juan Powell
this thread cements Sup Forums's retardedness for me
what kojima is saying is very very obvious
Logan Green
Kojimas greatest achievement in being deep and meaningful is making the Matrix of video games (IE ripping off grade school philosophy class material and being praised as a genius by retards)
He's a fucking hack and this interactive movie is going to be shit
Ryder Russell
You'll Cowards Dont Even Use Sticks
Luke King
REMINDER
Hunter Cox
>yfw Kojima's special brand of crazy is literally perfect for Silent Hill >but Konami booted him out
Nathaniel Barnes
That he's a hack living past his prime?
Jason Jackson
He's Japanese.
Brandon Gonzalez
>metal gear: ghost babel it's a metal gear game, not a metal gear solid game
Lincoln Ward
You guys don't actually think what Kojima said is bonkers do you? What he said was a pretty sensible way of looking at game structure and player interaction with the game world. If anything it's a far cry from 2deep4u bullshit.
Colton Thompson
zizek post
everyone get in here
Evan Sanders
>necklace Just what the hell are those things? They don't looks like USB's and they don't look like locks. They just look like loopholed metal blocks.
Easton Gutierrez
This guy is a fucking hack.
Jackson Scott
He doesn't even have an engine yet, how does he know what the gameplay will be like? Not like he wanted to make metal gear rising and couldn't figure out good gameplay mechanics or anything, right?
Eli Cox
I bet you they're simply futuristic dog tags. Nothing special, just dog tags. No meaning, no symbolism, just dog tags. Of whom? Blanks. It's just how people in a parallel future earth dress and accessorize.
Oliver Diaz
kojima is finally free
Connor Reed
A rope is a tool to hang yourself, ropes are the symbol of death. You can now use ropes in the game to hang people.
If I was Kojima, would you think I'm some sort of genius?
Blake Collins
Dude, Kojima been smoking some dangerous shit. Spending too much time in Los Angeles does that to you.
Carson Miller
can we have a moment of silence for Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Zone of the Enders, and Castlevania
Charles Barnes
>inb4 the entire game is basically an escort mission that lasts 5 hours.
Joseph Roberts
The fuck is he saying.
Carter Reyes
Ico?
Chase Brooks
This talk of ropes makes me think of the yoshi island games, where the main focus was to keep mario safe by not getting hit.
Adrian Martin
Why did Kojimbo make a game about Norman Reedus naked? Do you think he wants to fug him?
Dylan Butler
day of the rope?
Asher Nelson
Players typically use weapons that hurt or repel enemies. But in this game you can also try to be peaceful.
Anything other than that is just people bullshitting and looking too deep.
Juan Baker
How fucking high is Kojima holy shit
Mason Davis
we couldn't even get Quiet to be naked, but he got Reedus in the buff. what the fug.
Lincoln Robinson
He wants you to hang yourself obviously.
Blake Roberts
You have control over black holes and quantum states. Obviously gameplay has to center around them somehow
Kevin Wilson
Die in the game and you die in real life :^)
Grayson Hernandez
Nah, they've got formulas on them. They seem to have some meaning, but I doubt it'll become apparent anytime soon.
Matthew Sanders
Think of what a stick is. It's an individual, short, single object. A rope is a continuous long and connected object.
Like a punch is it's own thing. A roll is it's own thing. They aren't connected. They don't flow through one another.
Zachary Bell
Can you catch any big guys with those ropes?
Elijah Peterson
>“In this short story, Abe states that the first tool mankind created is a stick,” Kojima tells IGN. “He states that the stick is the first tool that mankind created to put distance between himself and bad things — to protect himself. He states that the second tool mankind created is a rope. A rope is a tool used to secure things that are important to you.”
AHAHAHAHAHA
FUCKING WHO SAID THAT ?!
Dear God, this is so pretentious. We are way above high levels of Neo Genesis Evangelion Autismo over here.
Carter Howard
No.
Christopher Russell
a massive multiplayer game where you become connected to everyone that you interact with, through peace or through violence. if anyone that is connected to you dies they disappear from your view forever, as if they were blacklisted. If you thoughtlessly kill everyone around you, or if you become too connected and then die, then you will effectively strand yourself, through death.
death stranding
Andrew Gutierrez
Shit idea.
Go kill yourself.
Thomas Reed
>GZ now accepted as a good game after years of 30 dollar demo shitposting The Zelda Cycle is real!
Ayden Robinson
Sounds interesting, hope that he delivers this time.
Leo Hernandez
it's good if you compared to the shit that MGSVTPP was
Robert Jackson
How do we go from rebirth to motherfucking space suits?
