DQ has a lot of puns in the game. The thing is Japanese is a very punny language. Happens when you have a pretty limited vocal language. English isn't that punny so forcing so many doesn't always work.

But honestly the only big problem I had with the new localization has been the accents. DQ4 was BAD on every level possible. DQ5 was much better but still had weird accents here and there that really didn't help. And there's the DQ5 boss.

Everything they shown so far with DQ7 I can't really remember a big accent. Maybe Prince Kiefer might speak like royalty but that's WAY different than forcing accents to people.

Siam is no longer called Siam. But is technically still a monarchy. With the oldest living king in the world currently. And they still speak the same language. Its retained more of its identity than Poland has.

But even if they completely removed the puns, I'd be fine with it. Like you said, they don't translate well into English. Though I wouldn't go as far to say that Japanese is a limited language. Just a different basis. Its not latin based. When it comes to Latin based languages, I can't stand rhymes and Poetry, yet these sound better in Japanese thanks to the common endings in letters.
