My graphics card fried itself recently so I have been playing Disgaea 5 to pass the time until the new card arrives.
What are some general tips and tricks? Should I hold off on getting gear and going into the item world until post game?
Should I get the newer classes immediately and skip the early ones?
Also everyone seems to say the story is shit and that might be true but the cast is good.

Yeah get newer classes immediately. Metallia is the best dlc character to get she gets a mass capture ability.
Also work on getting a sage, as they get an skill that attacks everyone on the map, and it's useful for leveling up.

Should I skip 1 and jump to five or play be release order? Cuz 5 looks really good, but I get the feeling I won't appreciate the changes unless I play every other one before it.

So I should dump the guys I got first, as in the lower class ones or is there a benefit to ranking them up to max?

1 is good but will be hard to go back to after playing the others so I'd start there.

Yes. 1 doesn't take too long to finish either even if you want to 100% it.

Bulk-up is so fun, bet the slut fighter can't use that move.

You get a trophy I think for maxing out every class, but I only used the unique characters and Sage by end game.

She's good but Healer is better.

Disgaea's the kind of game where you're allowed to get away with anything if it helps you get more power, it's kind of the theme of the series.

You can use any class, weapon, whatever you want if you know what you're doing. I have a cleric who nukes people with his fist skills for example.

Item World is great, do it as much as possible, or for as long as it's fun. Go into an item, find stronger items and go into them, repeat the cycle and it's entirely possible to ignore the story.

Play the story and when you can't beat a map do the itemworld for a bit. It's not worth it to grind at the beginning of the game because lateron you get level 9999 in like 5-10 minutes. Also sages are your best friend if you want to clear the itemworld because they can oneshot a whole floor of the fucking itemworld.

Best unique.
Best generic.
Best main character.
Best everything.

You can make anyone do almost anything, but if you try to do that before postgame it's gonna take a long time and/or a lot of effort. It's best to use the actual strengths of each class/character until you can easily grind to lv 9999.

The only thing she is good as is being a prinny.

Healing is seen as a sin in the netherworld.

She's actually a well respected demon hunter though.

If she is so well respected then why doesn't she have her own game?

Because they're making sure it's going to be the best game ever.
