>walking around pressing B on white spots is considered a core gameplay mechanic

Paper Mario is fucking dead.

There's always Mario and Luigi for RPGs.

>The paint gimmick solely exists because of the developers kids enjoying painting

>Those dislikes
Do you think Nintendo got the message?
It sort of worked for Federation Force

This is the best mural I've ever seen.

>Paper Morton is literally just 2D Morton art
>Doesn't even try to follow the PM character design style

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH THIS MESS?

JAJAJAJA EL JUSTO

...

Am i the only one who hates this trend Sticker Star started with the animation and design of the characters? Choppy movements and white outlines for the sake of pushing the paper gimmick in your face.

I mean the characters in TYD were tons of moving parts animating all at once so i guess thats too much effort for them now.

But user don't you like Game & Paper Mario? And whats wrong with characters having 3 FUCKING OUTLINES?

Wtf happened to Toadsworth? Why'd he disappear?

>actual story and dialog is back now

I'm psyched just for this alone. I can deal with not having RPG levelups, since you're doing the same sort of thing in battles anyway regardless.

Sticker Star disappointed me mainly because they entirely did away with story and made it "Super Mario Bros: Paper Mario edition". The fact that Color Splash isn't like this is enough to make me hopeful for the game/series again.

>Story is back

But it's generic "bowser done it. Go save peach"

>What I like
The first 3 Paper Mario games.

>What I don't like
Sticker Star and Color Splash.

>0.5 has been deposited into you account

>there will never be another paper mario game with a funny, enjoyable, dialogue heavy story ever again
>there will never be another paper mario game with partners all with different personalities ever again
>there will never be another paper mario game with partners all with different traits/abilities ever again

Don't say a word, just post your face when. No words, just yfw.

I can commend them for giving a slight, may i emphasize slight, reason to battle in this game. It increases the paint meter when you beat enemies. Sticker Star had zero reason to battle.

...

>Our toads have personalities but they all look the same
>If you want an RPG series, go play M&L
>Bowser not talking

I don't mean the main storyline, I mean there's actual side-stories in each of the levels involving actual dialog and character involvement, instead of the levels just being Mario going through from point A to point B.

Like the Enigmansion from Sticker Star was an example of this, but from what we've seen of the gameplay demo and trailer it looks like most of the levels have some kind of self-contained story to them now.

>Character involvement

I SURE DO LOVE GENERIC TOADS ALL ACTING THE SAME "Helpful but slightly zany" WAY!

If the battles are challenging and fun you don't necessarily need a specific reason like EXP to do them. Ultimately the reason you play games is to have fun. You don't need numbers on the screen for that.

Move on guys. It's over. Paper Mario is one of my favorite games of all time, and I don't whine as much as you do.

Too bad the battles were stripped down barebones and the only challenging battles also had an element of "hope you are psychic or you won't know what sticker to bring"

I don't hate Sticker Star like most people seem to. I think it was an okay game with a lot of poor design decisions, but it definitely gave zero incentive for battles.

...

I hate it too user. Everyone is saying that at least the visuals are gorgeous but I honestly like it less than TTYD. All it does is push the paper shit in your face.

>Look the roads are made of cardboard! The trees are papercraft! Haha Paper! Paper! PAPER! YOU GET IT YET?

Liru needs to be replaced with beyond good and evil 2

...

This is true of Sticker Star, but I think the Color Splash battle system has potential. You can make your attacks stronger or weaker depending on how much paint you use up to color the cards. This seems like it would add a lot more strategy to the battles.

It does suck that the bosses still have a stupid "thing card" weakness that makes them super easy, but the option to beat bosses without using their weakness is still there if you want a more challenging game.

There is no incentive to battle anything because there are much easier ways to get stickers and coins. Wasting your stickers, especially thing stickers on normal enemies wont help you in any way.

Its a good thing that now fighting enemies increases how much paint you can hold. It gives a purpose. Dont bring back turn based battles if this isnt an RPG anymore.

...

I always battled all enemies on Sticker Star. I dunno, the battles were really fun. Smacking enemies with the jumps felt super good.

The only thing I didn't really like about the game were the thing stickers. They look fucking ugly and out of place (but the radio one that played Star Maze from Mario Land 2 brought a big smile to my face).

I liked Sticker Star, but I didn't really want another game like it. I don't think it even touches the original and TTYD, but the 3DS library is so bad, SS is actually my favorite 3DS game. It wasa fun action/adventure game, it had some cool exploration aspects to it as well.

For Color Splash, I like the idea of enemy stickers. I'm a sucker for collecting that kind of stuff. I'm sad the thing stickers are back, and I wish we had different characters other than generic toads, but whatever, it is what it is. I'll pirate it anyway so I don't care, if it sucks it sucks.

Big whoop. The turd is polished now

I don't have this weird autistic rage against papercraft art styles so I think it looks great.

Instead you have a weird autistic love for shit games.

>Intentionally fugly papercraft shit
>good

...

I mean if jumping on enemies and using wacky items is the appeal of paper mario to you solely then play Super Paper Mario.

Better characters, an actual plot, funnier dialogue and memorable chapters despite the filler. The only thing Sticker Star has over SPM is the music.

It's called having fun. The base mechanics of how you battle and use action commands to attack and dodge enemies are still there. Are you saying you didn't like battling in the older Mario RPGs and only did it for the EXP? That's retarded. EXP is only there as a way of artificially pacing the game. It's not an absolute necessity. A game doesn't become any less fun just because you don't see numbers going higher each time you battle.

>walking around pressing B on white spots is considered a core gameplay mechanic
Sounds like a Paper Mario game.

...

Okami did it better

Getting EXP meant more levels, more levels means more ways to approach battles as your HP, FP or BP went up. In battles you could potentially get badges or items from drops/stealing. Partners, the crowd and crystal stars were all elements at play.

You dont need to grind in TYD but at the same time battles meant progression towards more combat options.

In the original game and TTYD the paper aesthetic was only for stuff like transitions and occasional visual flavor. It was never a part of gameplay (except for those overworld powers in TTYD), and you could actually forget that the paper aesthetic even exists and let yourself get lost in the world.

In Color Splash, you literally cannot forget that you're playing a storybook game because the paper shit is EVERYWHERE.

Imagine the paper themes like pepper on food. The first game only has a light sprinkling. You might think, "Okay, I wouldn't mind a little more of this." Then TTYD comes with the perfect amount, maybe teetering on too much, but it doesn't overpower the flavor of the food. Then you get to Super Paper Mario and think "Okay, a bit less pepper next time please" but you can still enjoy it. Then they come back with Sticker Star. You wanted more pepper right? There's like a pile of it on the food. All you can taste is pepper. You complain to the chef about it and hope it gets fixed next time.
THEN Color Splash. HEY GUY, I HEARD YOU LIKED PEPPER, SO HERES JUST A HUGE FUCKING PILE OF PEPPER AND NOTHING ELSE.

>>Intentionally fugly
The paper aesthetic looks gorgeous though, it's actually somewhat more irritating it looks so good when the gameplay has so little to offer.

If they made cards more permanent drops from enemies (maybe you get it, it starts colorless and instead of using color in battles, they get more colorful the more of the enemy you kill or some shit, I don't know) would give more incentive to fight stuff.

Everything looks so hilariously fake. It's overdone. It doesn't feel like a believable place

How the fuck is that better then TTYD'S style?

>Garbage in both 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D

I fucking hated Super Paper Mario. It does nothing well.

>Easiest babby game ever
>Platformer, and a bad one at that. Boring as fuck since it's so easy.
>Spam jump on everything to kill, the lame bosses don't even stand a chance
>One fucking town rehashed twice
>Constantly switching to the gimmicky 3D perspective is annoying as fuck

I couldn't stand playing this shit. I returned it back then. No amount of story will make me want to sit through bad gameplay.

Sticker Star was OK. It was a fun action/adventure game. You had exploration for collecting health upgrades and some backtracking with the blue doors, optional levels too. The level design was stellar, and it has challenging boss fights if you don't use the thing stickers (never bothered with them). I honestly like it for what it is.

Are you me?

But that's still just a very minor gameplay element that is missing from this game. You are acting as if this is a CRUCIAL gameplay element and that battling somehow becomes boring without it. This is objectively false, because the Paper Mario games make the battles fun in and of themselves, regardless of the reward.

You said yourself that TTYD doesn't require grinding. So if you took out leveling in that game, and all new attacks and abilities were found outside of battle instead, you wouldn't really be missing any crucial gameplay elements. You're still doing the same battles, making the exact same button executions as if the game did have artificial pacing through leveling.

In a game where you don't need to grind and simply battling every enemy that is in your direct path is enough to stay sufficiently leveled, the reward from leveling is entirely artificial and all in your mind. It's not crucial at all.

Are you?

I wanted to love this game. I was sure it was awesome, and it was basically the biggest disapointment I've ever had.

I liked Super Paper Mario. Not as much as TTYD of course, but I liked the characters and the setting.

...

I never thought Paper Mario looked like "a believable place." The old games looked fairly fake too, just a little more drab (like a diorama, but with less variance in paper thickness.) My favorite stuff was the big objects like the train because they usually looked like toys to me.

I mean, what makes paper characters look genuine that apparently paper settings lack, anyway? It feels like you're just using it as a symbol of the games being different and this terrible. Sticker Star was a mess, but it using paper backgrounds was never the problem. That was, if anything, the only upgrade.

Nobody wants to use thing stickers and regular stickers to solve puzzles and beat bosses cause none of that shit is clever. I guarantee you that the majority of sticker star players saved their reserves only for mandatory fights and puzzles.

"paper characters" was just a fancy name for 2D characters. They weren't obnoxiously "kindergarden art class" looking

...

They totally were though. They just didn't have the white outline.

Don't like: everything
RIP Paper Mario

I played through Sticker Star by battling every enemy in each room at least once. The game had stickers in abundance anyway and it felt weird just constantly throwing them away to make room for better ones. By battling every enemy, you could use up your weakest stickers so that you always have room for the better stickers that you come across.

I didn't really mind the battle system aspect of Sticker Star all that much. What pissed me off about that game was that the plot was removed and replaced with a generic SMB plot with very few level-specific side plots. I'm glad that Color Splash seems to be putting a much bigger emphasis on level-specific side plots now. Even if the main plot is still shitty, I still always enjoyed the chapter subplots just as much if not more.

If you're going to burn your money, at least buy the game used

Was there ever a TTYD mosaic? If not, we need to make one, pronto.

...

Isnt the whole reason why Paper Mario 64 looks the way it does is so that they could get the game to run better on the 64? It was artstyle out of necessity, they never planned to shove it in your face like this.

Sonk the Hedgeheg

Oh, and an appropriately depressing reaction image.

>The entire world revolves around retarded paper physics
>The original games the paper theme was just a cute art style

God damn it.

Do we know exactly how the card system works? I assume with how there are both blank and pre-filled cards the latter are permanently consumed and the former are reusable since they have the whole paint system, but if they're all perma-consume on top of the paint system that just puts even more bullshit in.

Friendly reminder to not purchase Color Splash if you're one of the people who's unsatisfied with the direction Paper Mario has gone, at least not on release. Don't disappoint yourself, and more importantly don't give Nintendo the impression that it's a game worth buying.

So I started to play TTYD and I'm enjoying it so far, what did Super and SS not do that made people hate them so much? Cause this game seems pretty hard to fuck up.

I would even go so far as to implore those who DO want to play the game to buy the game secondhand simply so Nintendo doesn't get a positive sale out of it.

Cards are destroyed no matter what

Painting cards simply allows you to use action commands for it

...

>Is there a possibility for a TTYD remaster?
>Would you buy it?

No. Of all the people that have been begging for a return to form for the past decade, not one would buy it.

Seriously, how tone-deaf are these people?

I dont think anybody at Intelligent Systems remembers they made TYD or that Paper Mario came before M&L.

Thats the only excuse i can give for the blatant disrespect that woman shows for the series.

Personally, I liked it best in 64 where they were just 2D sprites without the segmented bullshit.

Super is a sub-par platformer with RPG elements but people still liked the story it had.
Sticker Star had only the bare bones "Rescue Peach from Bowser" story, no partners, the paper aesthetic was becoming overwhelming, no RPG elements besides turn-based combat, and battles were mostly pointless.

That's even worse.

Betting the action commands are likely just as shallow as SS's with the same "press A when it sparkles" shit instead of the varied inputs the first two PM or the later M&L games had, or the real-time options of SSS's Advance moved.

...

Why did Paper Mario go so wrong? The original is one of my favorite games.

>rip sprites from a game

>PLS GIVE ME ALL THE CREDIT IF YOU USE THESE ANYWHERE

holy fuck what entitled cunts

>those pathetic excuses for identical toads

goddamn why can't they just admit that miyamoto is fucking senile when he forced that shit

A bunch of try hard unfunny fucks made it. The each person was more concerned with making their square grab everyone's attention than making the image itself funny.
The 20 lbs sticker should be lower.
The parappa part of the text shouldn't be so compressed.
I could go on.

Sticker Star basically removed everything good about the earlier games (partners, badges, originality, etc.)

It's pretty much NSMB: The RPG.

>We cant have Paper Mario and M&L co-exist despite doing their own thing

Call Square and tell them to stop making DQ, too similar to FF.

Same with Rockstar, we cant have RDR or Bully cause we have GTA.

At least it was a good game, unlike sticker star.

You can blame Miyamoto for that.
See Basically, Sticker Star WAS going to be more like the originals, but because it kept the same mechanics, Miyamoto said it felt like a port of TTYD.
He also didn't like them taking Toads and other enemies and changing their design to make them interesting.

I like to live dangerously.

Shit, sorry. I misread your post as being about super. At least super paper Mario was a good game, unlike sticker star.

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO ALL DAY?!??

Did you really just call badges, partners, star powers, and the entire plethora of RPG mechanics minor elements?

OH DEAR LORD SOMEBODY STOP HIM.

>He also didn't like them taking Toads and other enemies and changing their design to make them interesting.

There was nothing in that interview that suggested he didn't approve of interesting characters. It sounded more like he was giving them permission to cut corners with the character design in order to get the game released faster because a full TTYD cast would've taken them too long to meet the 2012 deadline.

Absolute madman

Fixed the filesize for you user.

...

As someone with a passing interest in computer science, explain what you did please?

He must be stopped. It's for his own good.

Its nice to see nintendo not make games for you babies.
