How did they make the world so big?
ITT: It's 1998

Fog.
what game?
i don't see any fog
Awful framerate
Overwatch
Hyrule field and other huge places use a lot of redundant textures, but
this also happened
Damn straight
fucking unplayable garbage
empty lifeless graphics
Boy this game is great! It invokes a sense of wonder and adventure I never felt before! I sure hope I don't come up with a crippling depression in the next 10 years!
Final Fantasy XV
That's more of the N64's tiny texture cache than an optimization sacrifice.
...
jokes on you, i was ALREADY depressed as a kid! but i enjoyed games back then and it helped a little.
I thought about this the other day. Looking back, I wonder if I was ever truly happy, but video games back then definitely provoked a sense of joy and wonder that I don't get as often now.
I think part of it is realizing that I have to be a grown-ass man and do adult shit now, and I always get that feeling that video games/internet are unproductive which hinders my enjoyment.
I've seen pools bigger than this.
Get off the internet user, I need to make a phone call
Yeah, I think about that too. Maybe I've always been depressed and I just wasn't aware enough to realize it as a kid.
>not having a dedicated phone line for your dial-up
i bet you don't use AOL either! you're missing out on all those keywords!
Confession time: When 3D came out I was fucking retarded. I got lost in Lon Lon Ranch. OoT was the game that broke me into spacial awareness in video games.
LOL, underage are actually excited for this game
aLttP FOREVA
What's the deal with OOT's framerate anyway?
I know it's very low, but it never feels as bad as it should. Other than big drops.
Fallout 4
This game is awesomesauce! For the win!
OoT reads input at 60 fps, same as Mario 64
I love video games. I hope they don't become shitty, starting in 2007.
where i live, there was a mental hospital that ran commercials on TV during the 90s about child depression on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network and advised parents to 'call if their children presented any of the symptoms'. i realized i had most of them, so i never really had any confusion over what was wrong with me. fuck those commercials. they just made me sadder.
Everyone acting like the newest Zelda was the only open world game in the series.
It started off that way even on the NES, it was as open world as you could get on that platform and era.
Just think of the possibilities for the 64DD!
where did this 2007 thing come from?
way to pluck an arbitrary year.
>Anyone knowing what a frame rate is in 1998
>not playing the PC version
Just Beautiful
>live ouside US
>the only carmaggedon i can get is the UK zombie version
>beat the game but didnt understand shit about the story behind all this
>buy the splat pack
>now even the 1st game has actual people and blood
>the game have a different story and it even make more sense than zombies
Why no one told me about this?
Magazines only reviewed the zombie version too and still called it too gory.
After playing blood and shadow warrior that pure bullshit.
Whats with reviews magazines??
It was the first full year of 7th gen consoles. Also, Big Bang Theory theory.
looks like shit.
>1998
>pc games have bigger multiplayer than consoles in 2016
kek
>Nintendo fell for the 3D meme
fuck me dudes
Guess I'm getting a dreamcast
Too bad n64 emulators are shit
I still don't get why people can't fix the framerate of the n64.
It's Gamecube emulation. Avoids all the problems of the disgusting N64 emulators. OoT can run at 60 FPS on Dolphin but there's an annoying bug with the hookshot.
Yeah because this looks so much better. At a higher resolution than ingame too.
Only underage like alttp. Zelda 2 is still best Zelda.
7th gen? Are you saying that two gens from now, games will start magically getting shitty? What do you think they are they gonna do, overestimate the hardware and make games run terribly?
Literally nobody likes your shitty black sheep title faggot.
Nintendo Power says it sold really well. So obviously a lot of people like it.
because of b a z i n g a...
>sold out in almost all states
how did we go from that.... to this?
Why would someone make such a shitty edit?
Literally looks like shit
Looks like a unplayable rendered backgrond
I bet someone will make theirs super overpriced and it'll launch with movies instead of games.
>You see those mountains
>you can literally climb every single one of them
>Looks like a unplayable rendered backgrond
Because it is. It's a shit edit someone made.
I get 0 nostalgia from this
I mean I don't hate Zelda 2 but it clearly sold well because it was the second Zelda game.
But it sold REALLY well.
If it wasn't good it wouldn't have sold as well as it did. Despite being a Zelda game. Which meant nothing at the time since there was only 1 before it.
right even though the screenshots on the back clearly show the game is very different
When it's blurry you can use your imagination. Making it clear just makes it look blatantly bad
Kal Ort Por
*the spell fizzles*
You are dead.
>tfw your dad bought it because he loved the first Zelda
>he couldn't stand it
>the neighborhood (his three drinking buddies and their kids I got to play with) chatter around the game echoed his sentiments
>blah blah blah anecdotes are fun
by making it on based64 and not piece of shit 1
It took me 30 years to realize that Hyrule Field is divided between two parts in OoT that would be one area if the N64 had been only a little more powerful,. Hyrule Field and Lake Hylia.
Those are 30 years I will never get back.
I'm sure no one will be that stupid after seeing how the Sega CD failed.
I liked the Sega CD. Lunar and Lunar 2 were great fucking games.
turn on nearest texture filtering
Very few polygons and low resolution textures. And the N64 was a pretty decent machine for its time.
What do you see if you climb the one farthest away?
The gorgeous remake for the PSX is coming stateside in a few months. It's a good time to be alive.
...
This looks like a PS1 edition
I'm not convinced. Remakes generally aren't as good as the original.
Do you ever wonder if playing video games satisfies a young person's need for exploration and adventure too early in life, and they end up being depressed losers because of it? Everything after OoT has been downhill.
and its better for it
It definitely had quality software, but the shitty FMV games really hurt the add-on's image.
>this is what sonyfriends actually think looks good
Super Mario 64 did that for me. This is something I never hear people talk about, and younger people are not even aware of because they have been moving around in 3d games since they were able to hold a controller.
I still got lost in Kokiri Forest too.
>tfw you caught the biggest fish
Well the quality of the FMV was dependent on the company that made the game. Some games had good FMVs like Lunar. Some had terrible FMVs like Sewer Shark.
HAHAHAHHA
This is basically the closest thing PS1 has to Ocarina of Time
its better looking
Someone should make a 3d zelda clone engine with a level editor and everything included. They'd make millions.
>Vas Ort Flam
>Corp Por
ooooooOOOooOOOooOOOooOOOoOoOOo
HEY! LISTEN!
sure if you like a foggy twitchy piece of shit
looks good for PS1 though i admit
Did I miss fallout 3?
Wtf?
but those images aren't foggy at all, they are played in mupen64plus with fog turned off
REMOVE TEXTURE FILTERING
Good thing that fad's over.
I personally think I can still enjoy video games...if I don't let that part of me that tells me that I could be doing something productive. - It's like I take the fun out for myself.
I overthink how I could be out getting girls, or traveling to new places, or anything else.
Sometimes I stop caring and I enjoy video games immensely, but sometimes that conscience of mine fucks up my enjoyment.
How did they make the level so big?
I don't know, it adds a certain charm to the game.
looks like shit
a noisy grainy image with fake detail and hardcore dithering
i can understand somebody getting a retro boner over it, but from an objective image processing standpoint it's shit
That was fucking unreal
How do you navigate real life without spacial awareness? Seriously?
by bringing even the best PC graphic cards to their knees above 640x480
Well, why DON'T you do those things? Although games don't have to be mindless fun, either; and as long as they're not, there's room for personal growth through them.
>a noisy grainy image with fake detail and hardcore dithering
its just the unfiltered textures, there is no dithering or "fake detail". its the textures as they were drawn. the whole point of texture filters were to smooth it out so it didn't make noise, and it turned out to look like fucking blurry shit
oops posted wrong image
Clearly real life and 3d video games are different, user. Use your brain for a second.
>there is no dithering
yes there is, when you use nearest neighbor it makes mach banding more prominent since there are no smooth transitions in color gradients
>fake detail
high frequency noise can create the impression of bump detail in stills
>the whole point of texture filters were to smooth it out so it didn't make noise
which is good because noise in an image is considered an error of image processing
>and it turned out to look like fucking blurry shit
nope
objectively looks better to people who don't get retro nostalgia boners
Growing up with 3D games its easy to not be able to appreciate this but video games approximate 3D. It's not real. Without growing up in it a lot of us took time to acclimate. Kids now all do it when they're 3 where growing up I was a boss at the first Zelda because 2D top down views and side scrolling was what I grew into.
There's a lot of unseen connections our brains go through to relate 3D images to 3D real world concepts. It's one giant analogy for our brain and some need more training than others to get it worked out.
