>tons of cheap jumpscares >awfully placed save points >uninspired and laughable enemy designs >terrible as action horror mediocre as survival horror >combat is obviously bad yet most enemy fights are unavoidable >inventory system is simply bullshit and unfair >horrible voice acting and predictable plot >game overstays its welcome by significant margin due to lots of backtracking >player literally forces itself to finish the game >instead of solid 4 hour game we get tedious 8 hour game
Fuck everyone who says this the best horror mod, They Hunger and even Afraid of Monsters are much better.
I can't believe you forget the awesome co-op campaigns Cry of Fear has
Liam Cook
Single player is always the most important unless the dev says so
Nolan Wright
No.
Juan Perry
bump
Connor King
But both those games have just as many silly jumpscares as Cry of Fear. Hell, Afraid of Monsters is made by the same people as Cry of Fear.
Wyatt Wilson
no, i thought it was fantastic there really aren't many action-horror games as good as it. in fact, in terms of its particular style of action-horror, there aren't any other games like it period. also i cannot believe that someone would say they hunger is better. now THAT is an overrated mod.
Easton Thompson
Yes I know, but AoM just felt like a tighter and better made game despite lower production values
Isaac Phillips
Cry of fear might be the best action horror i have played
Juan Phillips
That's just not true when RE4 and FEAR exist
Robert White
I have not gotten around playing RE4 yet and FEAR is not action horror it is standard fps with the occasional spooky moment outside combat
Nolan Hill
It's up there though, with the added bonus of being free and easy to run on a toaster.
Juan Ortiz
>nightmare house 2 no longer works with the latest source sdk
Christopher Gonzalez
Underhell is the best sourcemod
Fite me fgts
Yes I know that CoF and AoM are gldsrc
Christopher Garcia
Underhell was pretty fucking good
Brandon James
Remember when Underhell dev reviewed Cry of Fear on Moddb and gave it 7/10 and Anders got butthurt and gave Underhell 1/10?
Luis Myers
last i played underhell it ran like ass because it doesnt support multithreading. fixed yet?
John White
>tfw I got too spooked at the first jump scare and never played the game again
How do I stop being such a pussy?
Kevin Rivera
The worst jump scare is in the very beginning of the game. After that they're based on enemies suddenly busting down doors. The rest of the time I found that the game did a good job at making a dreadful atmosphere.
Also you don't even mention the tedious "loading" screens every time you enter a door, which really becomes annoying when you realize that they're just fake, since enemies later break through the doors and the area on the other side is already loaded.
Christian Nguyen
i didn't recall a real jumpscares, to be honest. only "cheap" symbolism silent hill wannabe . Also, good story, not so "predictable". Decent gameplay too.
Andrew Thomas
never played underhell is it any good? and also i dont keep up with dev drama
Owen Butler
Afraid of Monsters was far better. one of the best mods for any game.
Kayden Scott
Paranoia is also pretty good although pretty short The sequel was meh though
Dominic Nguyen
...but they released an update last Halloween that fixed that (although they removed some easter eggs like Uboa).
Underhell is a better FEAR game than any game in the FEAR series
Good shootan and good spooks too
Charles Flores
Remember when Anders tried to get PewDiePie to not play Grey/Mistake-2?
Cameron Foster
I honestly feel bad for the people who made Underhell that nobody cares about anything other than the spooky house. The entire rest of the game was like wasted time.
Jaxson Thompson
I am by no means a Cry of Fear apoligist. I think it's a decent experience that teases you with moments of brilliance but then spoils them with childish jump scares a 12 year old boy would come up with. >After that they're based on enemies suddenly busting down doors. That happens once in the whole entire game in the apartment building with a spider doll and that is one of the extremely few well done jump scares the game has. >which really becomes annoying when you realize that they're just fake, since enemies later break through the doors and the area on the other side is already loaded. You very well may be retarded. As I already said, that only happens once in the entire game. In this instance the game loaded an area that was combined of both the apartment room and the ajoining hallway, that doesn't mean the loading screens are fake you fucking moron.
Cameron Price
>yfw Anders made original Afraid of Monsters mod when he was barely 14
Matthew Myers
I know how you feel. The sequel just...is.
Robert Ortiz
>a good thread >with people talking about games they like >without shitposting >on Sup Forums h-how?
Ian Hall
It looked great for a GoldSrc engine mod. It was kinda boring but the ambience and atmosphere was heavy and creepy as fuck.
Jace Miller
The metal music felt out of place
Jacob Ross
I would rank FEAR in my top 5 games ever played, possibly top 3 if I really had to make a call, and I still agree with this. The game was overall a "Thriller" vs. a horror game, most of the tense moments were because of how hard the gunfights could be at high difficulties, not the horror atmosphere, even if that was great too.
because the games we're talking about are all free. since there's no agenda behind the posts and its strictly pc based, no shills, no consolewars, there's nothing to shitpost about
Luis Long
This too. No music or maybe some creepy music would have been perfect.
Ryder Sanders
FEAR was boring office corridor shooting simulator I had to finish it in 2 hour bursts because I got so bored
Jose Hernandez
Spooky-related threads are usually shitpost free until people come in dumping fake EAS videos and .gifs.
So sit down, grab your favorite scary mod, and chat a while.
Anthony Hall
>that doesn't mean the loading screens are fake you fucking moron
But they are? You have a working understanding of goldsrc, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 'loading' between doors is supposed to be a homage to resident evil right?
Alexander Young
Do modders actually get any money or anything from making these free mods? Imagine that people in the past had so much love for games they would make custom stories for them for free.
Jaxon Williams
I think the most they get is donations/patreon money.
Grayson Smith
>jump scares The enemies are just loud. Turn your volume down a bit if you don't like it. There's literally only one jumpscare in the entire game, in the beginning with the camera.
Wyatt Jenkins
>played every major horror mod for source gldsrc, even the smaller ones >played pretty much every AAA horror game from america to japan >played pretty much every good indie horror game >played tons of rpgmaker, gamemaker, etc. horror games
WHAT WHAT TO PLAY NOW I'm really getting frustrated cause of no gemus
Landon Adams
The OP is the definition of a shitpost.
Carter Jackson
>negative opinions are shitposts
Easton Fisher
>There's literally only one jumpscare in the entire game Shut your fucking mouth kid.
Joseph King
>shitty savepoints >shitty inventory >terrible action these are just not true
Gabriel Hernandez
classic spooks coming thru Playing this with friends in Sven Coop is really fun
Evan Bailey
>Imagine that people in the past had so much love for games they would make custom stories for them for free. crazy right have you played transmissions:element 120? it just came out on steam for free and its really short, but well made. great atmosphere even if the action is kinda meh imo. it'd probably be more fun to someone who's more creative with the weapon options they give you
It's not a negative opinion, it's a wrong opinion backed up by fabrications. It's a post with no substance.
Jacob Cook
>transmissions:element 120 I'll give it a try tommorow, thanks I did watch those videos and I think I played everything on them that I found interesting, but I should rewatch them.
Christopher Gray
The save points are just unfair, the first 3 episodes are bearable, but then it gets really frustrated when you get suddenly killed and have to replay some parts all over
The inventory is also BS, especially later when you lose your bag so you constantly have to drop items so you can pick and use another one and then come back and pick it again
ALso the fac that they added "realistic" reloading is just frustrating
They Hunger would be the GOAT mod if not for the weak 3rd episode
Those 2 final boss fights were pretty crap
Ryan Long
>The morning after the asylum >Just you and the birds alone in the forest Still one of my favorite bits in any game.
Ayden Brown
>everything that scared me is automatically a jumpscare Calling an enemy simply showing up and being loud a jumpscare is like calling shooting that same enemy with Mouse1 is a QTE. Get your facts straight, dumbass.
WHY DID 3 HAVE TO BE SO SHIT 1 WAS GREAT 2 WAS GREAT 3 ATE FUCKING DICK WHY
Angel Rodriguez
Those blade women had the most irritating dying sounds ever
David Morales
>1 was great Really? I played it last halloween and was shocked how bad it was. It stole so many ideas from Doom 3 and FEAR and fucked it up.
Liam Cox
I could never get into Dead Space, mainly due to its repetitiveness
Oliver Smith
what did it steal from doom and fear? i'd definitely agree that it has horror cliche's out the ass but its not like doom and fear have a trademark on those, and i think dead space did them pretty well
James Lewis
Doing this at the top of my head (i know it's only been 9 months since halloween, but my memory is terrible)
I recall hearing tiny "whispers", but it did it horribly. I dont think they were coming from anywhere, no 3D audio with it. Also, it was too frequent and it always sounded the same so it was just annoying. Were there messages on the walls? I feel like there were but I might be wrong about it. Like, blood messages?
The only thing I remember liking in Dead Space was the Zero-G moments, although it was way too slow. And the horizontal/vertical slicer gun thing, which eventually became useless later in the game.
I still plan on playing Dead Space 2 this halloween, I hear it's better, but if it's full of the cliches done wrong and slow-paced movement, it's going to be just as boring. I really don't see how anyone can say "Dude, that's my favorite game ever" (someone legit said that to me as i was playing that) when Doom 3 exists. Doom 3 did the atmosphere perfectly. FEAR 1 did too, but wasn't as scary.
Logan Butler
I really hate CoF but the enemy designs are truly eerie. That fucking giant is nightmares fuel.
Brandon Phillips
i get what you're saying. if all of those things about dead space 1 bugged you, you might like dead space 2 a lot better. its waaay more fast paced
Isaac Perez
>And the horizontal/vertical slicer gun thing, which eventually became useless later in the game
Sebastian Watson
Anyone played Cthulhu mod for Hal-Life?
It had some great moments but was kinda buggy
Sebastian Wilson
That mod was a mess.
Jayden Powell
nothing compares to the sawrunner NOTHING
Liam Martin
>those flying enemies on beds Dumbest design I ever seen
Carson Davis
tfw one time I ended up being chased by him in a circle for 7 minutes because I thought it was a boss fight but you were just supposed to run and he was invincible
Isaiah Powell
kek. I forgot about that.
wew lad
Blake Stewart
Not really horror, but Half-Quake series had a lot of creepy moments
Adrian Foster
I honestly never considered that people unironically liked it
Jonathan Ross
Afraid of Monsters is fucking awful, too.
James Anderson
It won tons of MOTY awards
Hunter Barnes
>was just about to stream CoF >stumble upon this thread
John Gomez
no one ironically likes things, they just want to appear to be "acting ironic" when they are embarrassed about liking something
Nathan Stewart
came here to post this. starts out ok but quickly becomes terrible
Xavier Lopez
That RE style mansion was pretty cool
Lucas Sanders
Wasn't there a jumpscare for looking at the painting in the New Game+ room where you can get the camera etc? The whole "creepy fucking painting"?
Aiden Edwards
I mean its a free game, i enjoyed it for what it is.
Adrian Baker
>better than FEAR
yeah, no
Nathaniel White
WERE YOU AT LAST NIGHT'S SUMMONING?
I MADE THE SACRIFICE MYSELF
Blake Edwards
Honestly, after playing Amnesia and Penumbra nothing really cares me anymore
the creators of the game have a band called "intig" that does stuff similar to this but more metal-y and most of the lyrics are pretty cringey (thankfully there arent a lot)
Gabriel Wood
the guy who made aof and cry of fear loves re4
Hudson Myers
Well that's obvious
Jonathan Diaz
yeah
John Barnes
The protagonist is such an edgy punk He obviously caters to Linkin Park crowd
