Pretty much this. It was amusing seeing all the butthurt about how the community was some bastion of free content and anarchy with absolutely no problems before paid mods came along. It's been ego and drama central from nearly day one. It wasn't material gain, but the social currency of ego boosting accomplishments and kudos that were the trade.
That said, Steam Paid Mods was a complete fucking joke that really did showcase how terribly a monetary system like that worked with the modding community. And the current console mod fiasco really does show how fucking retarded the console community at large is when it comes to this stuff.

The point of those posts was less on the "they have the right to decide how it's distributed" part (putting whether they do or not aside) and more on the "cry on the internet about it" part. The modding community is, as a lot of community's are that revolve around a small subset of singular, passionate content providers and a dedicated consumer base, a cesspool of drama.
