Overwatch players spent $269 million on in-game transactions in May

>Overwatch was the No. 1 premium-priced PC game for digital add-on revenues in May, according to SuperData Research. On console, it was No. 5 for overall digital sales. That was enough to generate $269 million in revenues last month for Blizzard Entertainment’s excellent class-based team shooter. The gaming industry is worth $99.6 billion a year, and SuperData reports that digital sales across console, PC, mobile, and the web produced $6 billion in May alone. That’s up 11 percent thanks in part to Overwatch, which sells for $40 on PC and $60 on console and was the fastest-selling game last month.

Fucking jews

Astounding how they can announce numbers for Overwatch, but they can't tell us how many active North American subscribers there are for World of Warcraft.

>“[2K parent company] Take-Two’s Battleborn had a significantly poorer performance [compared to Overwatch,” said van Dreunen. “[It earned] an estimated $11 million from digital revenues.”

>While it looks like Battleborn has already come and gone, Overwatch is just getting started.

Don't worry about that goy, just pre order

>$269 million on in-game transactions

I refuse to believe that.

And this is how you know games are absolutely fucked.

Horse Armor killed video games.

it does seem rather hard to believe

Blizzdrones would suck down turds off the street if they have the blizzard logo lightly stamped into them.

>$300 MILLION on gachas for cosmetics
Nips and Koreans had the right idea after all, I guess.

Don't worry they will start to announce WoW sub numbers again after the Legion gives it the normal expansion boost; and then they will stop again after everyone quits again after a month.

I'll never understand why people have so many weird issues with this shit.

I got every skin, spray, and POTG stance I've wanted since the game came out and I'm only level 58. Haven't spent a fucking dime besides buying the game.

I'm beginning to firmly believe the only people who are complaining haven't played the game or understand how it works. This is the majority of people posting, so at the end of the day it goes to show that the majority of Sup Forums just talks out their ass all day without really knowing anything.

It's fun seeing it in real time.

Yeah how dare people complain about idiots spending so much money it adds up to hundreds of millions of dollars in a month for stuff they can get by just playing the game and not spending a dime!

The average person spent $27 on loot boxes? That seems extreme

Right? It's almost like companies can lie and cheat all they want as long as people accept it and throw money at them. Kinda like every fucking industry in existence.

What is the point in this thread?

>269 million
>If everyone bought $1.99/2 Boxes
>that's 135,175,879 million people

Do you see how asinine that is? Considering Overwatch has nowhere near that many fucking players by any margin, that means people have been throwing money at a game for stuff they can get for free.

The real important questions is how much Owatch did in actual sales? How big are the microtransaction earnings comparted to actual game sales?

#rekt

Because it is.

its likely including game sales

okay, so people are idiots with their money? how does that effect me having fun playing a video game

I think its time for me to quite gaming

Bullshit.

I'm higher level than you and don't nearly have all the skins and intros I want at all. Not even close.

Absolutely impossible unless you only wanted a single specific skin and intro maybe.

That would still be $200mil+ in transactions, and it says in-game transactions.
Weren't they at like 4 mil a few months ago? I imagine between all regions, NA probably has like 1 mil at best. Hell even the top raiding guilds have all quit.

It doesn't. Nobody ever said it did.

there are far worse things on which to waste $27 on average

>companies/developers see success like this
>they begin doing the same practices

fuckin Korean and Chink and Japan and and and...

well then you're a prissy faggot, what you need a special skin for every player? I have legionaries for multiple characters including ones I play as often. It's either from drops or getting 500 currency drops

this makes me fucking sick

Which is precisely what FPS Map Packs and Horse Armor did. Now we have it everywhere. Fortunately a few fans get into an uproar over it (I'm looking at you Tales and Baba) and they go back on the practice at least somewhat.

No you fucking don't. What are you, some kind of fag who mains?

Kill yourself.

>legionaries

And some people ask why gaming industry it's cancer now. here one reason.

I'm all for it if it's like overwatch. Free content for everyone because of fucking dumbfucks spending money on useless things.

>tfw smarter than people that give money to blizzard

I see we've learned nothing since diablo 3

I don't understand why people buy lootboxes.

I understand the psychology and gambling bullshit but why do people go "Yeah, I am willing to spend real world cash on something I could get by simply playing for an hour" COMBINED with the random chance aspect.

I'd understand if you could buy the money to buy whatever unlocks you want, but no. You're buying chances to get unlocks - that you can earn without paying anyway.

Who would spend money on it? Keys in CSGO/TF2 at least made some sense to me because as I understand it those include some crate/box only skins.

And I don't mean "omg why are these people ruining gaming" (hell I think Overwatch has the least offensive microtransactions I've ever seen). I just genuinely don't get it.

Because people are lazy. I bet we could sell them fucking leaves honestly.

Wow, that's pretty good for a dead casual """game"""

it wasn't too long ago that updates and patches to games didn't require hundreds of millions of dollars spent on literal colored pixels.

>I got every skin, spray, and POTG stance I've wanted since the game came out and I'm only level 58.
how? do you only play one character? I'm almost double your level and I've only finished like 4 characters

Why are people buying character skins in a first person shooter? You can't even marvel at your own pretty skin unless you get killed.

Not that guy, but if I weren't so lazy I'd take advantage of the stupidity of people.

For that 2 seconds of taunt animation and victory/loss poses, oooooh aaaaaaah.

People are fucking retarded and getting more retarded by the day somehow.

Legendary skins often have unique visual elements for your weapon.

The "lazy" argument doesn't even work either. I'd understand it if Overwatch used a Hearthstone-like system of daily challenges but it doesn't. You literally just have to play.

people are stupid and do not seek penetrating wisdom.

Blizzcucks are the most pathetic addicts on the face of the earth

>implying there's no man hours spent in those colored pixels.

>Overwatch DLC sold more than Battleborn

Daily reminder that video games are legitimately harmful due to introduction of gambling schemes to minors

>implying those colored pixels are developers producing "content"

We can just go ahead and jump into blaming economics, marketing, and psychology....

The lazy argument is exactly why they decided to make them purchasable.

>we put the system up and there was immediately [people] like ‘okay, this is awesome, but sometimes I have more money than I have time, it would be really great if I could buy a loot box’ - we like that idea. We want to make it available, we just haven’t got to it yet.”

>opinion(s) based on the word "content"

Post yfw you pop a box and snatch a fat ledgie
Feels fucking great, am I right Sup Forumsros

They're harmful only to retarded people. I never spent more than 30 cents on in-game transactions.

when i think of content i usually think of gameplay mechanics that are interactive. modes, maps, weapons, characters. not what color my characters pants are.

This. I am not even a blizzard fanboy, this is the first game I've enjoyed from them since W3, its a casual babby shooter but its at least challenging and fun. I haven't spent any extra money on it and I have quite a few skins and shit. Not that I fucking give a fuck what my model looks like in a fps anyway.

Sup Forums is just Sup Forums lite when it comes to opinions.

No, because state put the laws in place to protect the vulnerable. It needs to step in and stomp Valve and Blizzard out of circulation.

If it was to Americlaps there wouldn't be refunds on Steam.

All these massive profits are what happens when gambling is allowed to run rampant.

But it still involves the colored pixels though.

and the whole point was that money shouldn't have a bullet point in making those things happen.

And to stop assumptions, i don't know the business behind blizzard, but i was merely calling out something on a very basic level rather than the amount of money it takes that causes those pixels/content to be created.

Didn't Sup Forums said lootboxes were going to fail because they had free content?

Why is Sup Forums wrong 100% of the time holy shit.

Same retards that said MN9 was going to be the next megaman.

last i heard it was 10 million and that was over a week ago

Then that's a different story.

but regardless it's all of the things i've mention, that make what you say to be true.

and the unwillingness to step up to the big corps, are a problem.

I would just hope that businesses wouldn't see all green. Definitely a weird issue here.

It's true.

I spent ten bucks on Lootboxes. it's like buying a scratch-off lottery ticket.

You want to know why everybody bought shitloads of lootboxes? It's because they don't have anything of worth related to gameplay inside of them.

Call of Duty added Supply Drops with weapon variants and brand new weapons, and people got pissed and stopped buying them.

If you could get different weapons, stat boosts or christ forbid HEROES from Loot Boxes, I can guarantee you that after a decent first month they'd drop off super hard. When people want the shiny thing, they'll spend more. When people want the thing that actually affects how they play the game (besides people bad at a character only playing that character because they got a lucky skin), they're bound to pay less for it because they'll lose interest in the game if they don't get it.

Overwatch also gives you Lootboxes at a pretty steady rate of around 6-10 games for every Lootbox at 22,000 EXP, so you're getting a bit of a drip, but not too much.

I'm actually really happy with how they designed this. This way people will pay for heroes and maps for at least a couple of years before the game goes F2P.

Are you aware you can buy more than one fucking loot box and that there are special 50-packs?

Are you fucking retarded?

we're not in disagreement.

the original comment is basically "massive successful micro-transactions allow for more 'free' content"

the idea is that multi-million dollar microtransaction schemes should not be a prerequisite for developers to update their games

Heroes and maps are confirmed free already

Honestly i wouldn't want either having played Overwatch. This is hands down worse then COD vs BF tier shit. Hell id prefer those games to this new cancerous hero shit. Its like class based shooters but even more limited and gay as fuck.

No, the average person likely spent 0-2 dollars on loot boxes.

That's not how these models work.

These models work by taking advantage of a select few who will become addicted to the feeling of opening a loot box and will compulsively purchase them.

he means they pay for the development of them you idiot

southpark.cc.com/clips/32f3l8/built-an-addiction-machine

There is no issue here, these games (Overwatch, CS:GO, Dota 2, LoL etc etc) are designed around their market mechanics, that is loot drops that introduce both Pavlovian reflex and skinner box psychology. It is quite obvious that they, through a stranglehold these compaines hold over PC market (not talking about mobile for a moment), namely through proprietary platforms such as Steam, Battle net and whatnot can also control the cash flow that mostly comes from underage gamers using their family's credit cards. Considering this isn't classified as gambling makes it illegal to even pander to adults, but what is really jarring here is that they take a special aim at the vulnerable. Gabe Newell has been trying to entrap children ever since he worked as an FBI informant trying to get that German kid a lifetime in jail for looking at couple lines of code.

We're talking about billion dollar market here, and until these companies get audited, penalized and ultimately dissolved, until facecam people that peddle gambling schemes to their underage audience while on ValveBlizz payroll get jailed as culprits nothing will change.

Note that CDPROJEKT has introduced Gwent so they're culpable too. You know where they're going with it and that's not gameplay.

Glad we're on the same page.

I get that it takes money to make money, but i don't understand how something can be completely for free.

You're also approaching my limit of understanding with your statements. As i sense there's deeper meaning behind your word choice.

Wait, they already have DLCs?

Well, by your way of thinking, It's not Game Industry fault, but stupid peoples who catching every bait.

Daily reminder blizzshills make threads on Sup Forums and defend it when you point out /vg/ is where their ilk should go, they use the same common defense points over and over

Daily reminder Overwatch is aimed for people bad at FPSes, underage, and tumblr.

but we know literally nothing about the gwent standalone

i have no problem with calling out some of my favorite devs on bullshit, but this is total conjecture

Do you guys specifically search for things like this to be outraged about, or do you not understand how the system works? The consumer suffers no loss not participating in this microtransaction system.

>total conjecture

Come on, don't be naive. CDPROJEKT once had hired loan sharks go after their legitimate customers, this is nothing to them.

Thank you for your response.

Keep spreading the truth.

Whoops, meant that people buying all these lootboxes would pay for development. Kind of like TF2. Crazy people spend hundreds to get the fancy new hats, while everybody who paid or got the game free can enjoy all the new weapons and maps.

I know it's futile to talk about gaming media, but the silence on this has been deafening. I don't read law/economics magazines but I'm surprised they didn't hop in on this.

With all the shilling Blizzard has made around Overwatch, isn't that much either.

Literally no one cares except you Overwatch babies

>people can throw money at something to be lazy
>Sup Forums thinks people won't do this

Just turn down your speakers

>Buying ingame items for real money

>tfw I spent close to $200 on loot boxes alone
>tfw I'm part of the problem
Please help me. I'm just so weak. I care way too much about how I look like as a 3D model

confirmd for free... free in the loot boxes :D

I was hoping the game would get a discount soon but if they are making this much from loot boxes it won't be soon. So now that they have 2 cashcows one being HS I wonder where all the money is going.

Spent $18 on bonds to get gp on rs

/thread

neogaming happened, clash of clans/royale happened, microtransactions happened

overwatch game is mediocre, it really is

also check "breeding season" a monster girl hentai game? it gets 32k a month on patreon

gamers like tits and asses

Go play "games" like SL or multiplayer RPGs instead where the main focus is socializing and character/avatar appearance and gameplay is either absent or reduced to some kind of background activity.

>gp on rs
Speak English, fucker.

Seriously, and any need for skill is thrown further out the window than Destiny's PvP threw it.

Its just an Xbov Live Arcade tier game that everybody is fawning over because of the admittedly entertaining shorts and the wide-appeal pixaresque art style. Plus, any straight man's gotta admit those guys know how to make a nice looking booty.

Overwatch fags WILL defend this.

Well at least Metzen has plenty of money for his coke habit now
