they are both very different
quake 1's levels don't drag because they are short and to the point the enemies are more interesting than 2 as well movement is subjective
quake 2 is technically better in every other aspect though
the original has way more mods and is generally more accessible

yes, that is Quake 1's main focus and appeal. Online didn't really become the focus until Quake 3 arena

Quake 1's level design is the best in the genre from a purely gameplay perspective and hasn't really been attempted to be matched by any other game since. It was one of the last FPSs that carried the same level design principles as the original Doom and had highly abstract levels that were designed with gameplay first over realism.

yeah it's still good, it might seem a bit simple though and very short
I dunno about that but the mission packs are worth playing and there are a lot of good levels you can find on quaddicted.com
at this point the quake brand can be literally anything (as long as it's a shooter) it's just a blank slate
QW was a big deal
for quake 2 use yamagi or Q2pro vanilla is also completely fine but those others have some neat features and make net play retard proof
