Favorite jrpgs of the 2010s so far?

My favourite JRPG of the 2010s is Growlanser IV on PSP. It's an enhanced port of a PS2 game but quite a bit was added. Radiant Historia is one of my favourites as well. In both cases, I found the gameplay system solid and the story decent. Growlanser had a lot of variety in mission objectives and required different setups and tactics for each one, while Radiant Historia required some strategy in terms of party/gear setup, using buffs, limit break, and executing combo attacks.
Other great JRPGs I enjoyed include Dark Souls, SMT Devil Survivor, and Valkyria Chronicles 3. There's nothing in particular I'm planning on buying in the near future but I'm cautiously optimistic about SaGa Scarlet Grace.
I've had this in my backlog for ages, how long is it?
Good taste user. Not really into SoulsBorne, but I like the rest, especially Devil Survivor 1-2.
Hoping Grand Kingdom turns out well. Aside from the ones you listed, the 2010s haven't been very good for srpgs.
30-45 hours, depending on speed and how much of a completionist you are.
...
does anyone have a good, easyish JRPG for someone to get into the genre? I've been a gamer for a long time and I just never really got into JRPGs because I got intimidated by the length and difficulty.
Does Strange Journey and Dragon's Dogma count?
THIS GAME SUCKED. OVERRATED Sup Forums SHIT AS ALWAYS
Great, no one gives a shit.
Yeah. Any kind of jap rpg. Turn-based, arpg, srpg, drpg.
I like em big
I'll look into Grand Kingdom. I never played Grand Knights History because I apparently missed out on the online component.
Have you played Arc Rise Fantasia? I've heard conflicting things about it, but there aren't a lot of other semi-recent JRPGs that look interesting.
It would help if you provided more information, but a good beginner RPG would be Super Mario RPG on the snes. It's easy, simple, short, and charming.
Why do you think that? What did you dislike about it?
OP here. Don't fall for the "jrpgs are hard" meme. Most aren't.
If you want a quick, easy, good, traditional entry into the genre, just start with something like Chrono Trigger.
EOIV, SMTIV, Bravely Default
...
Pokemon?
It's everyone's first JRPG.
I know that this is a shitpost but you hurt me a tiny bit.
Arc Rise is ok. Maybe 7.5/10. Some people seem to really love it. It's an adequate modern jrpg void filler.
PS1 Final Fantasy (7, 8 ,9) are always a good place to start. Pretty easy and decent but nicely paced story. Not very long either (around 30 hours).
It also depends on what you value more, gameplay or story. In my case Persona 3 is what really got me into JRPGs, the story is very good but the grinding can get a bit repetitive. Persona 2 is probably even better in story, but the gameplay is kinda bad.
Don't know much about recent JRPGs outside ARPG (Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, Nier) though, I mostly play old ones.
I guess this too. Silver and Emerald are fantastic even today.
Wait, they did a port to the PSP but with extras? How the fuck did i not know about this. I still have the PS2 one sitting around, but yeah im gonna have to look that up now.
VIII is a hot mess. Gameplay, plot and cast.
>Persona 3 is what really got me into JRPGs, the story is very good but the grinding can get a bit repetitive. Persona 2 is probably even better in story, but the gameplay is kinda bad.
Just curious, but would you mind elaborating a bit more on how Persona 3's gameplay is better than Persona 2's? Persona 3 has that terribly designed tower dungeon, AI-controlled party members, and pretty low depth to the combat. In Persona 2 there's no grinding, you can switch all your personas in battle, can rearrange your turn order, can use fusion attacks, etc. The only flaws I can think of are the lack of difficulty even in EP, and the clunky interface. I thought the gameplay in P2 was a lot better than in P3 but I've heard other people with your stance and I'd like to understand your perspective.
Great stuff so far ITT.
>Bravely
Well someone had to post a bad one.
Still better than IX.
Am I doing this right?
>Bravely is bad
>fucking smt IV is good though!
I would like to live in your world.
Legend of Legaia, Breath of Fire 3 or 4, and Dragon Quest IV are all great places to start.
If you are wanting to get into action RPGs then I'd recommend Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Terranigma.
>Memesona
No.
If that's one of your favorites, then yeah.
I will never get over how every design that isnt a generic solider or angel is fucking garbage
The ps2 version of growlanser IV is jap-only. There's also a PSP port of growlanser I, which was (and still is) jap-only as well. Perhaps you're thinking of Growlanser II, III, or V?
In any case, RIP growlanser.
Why DQIV over III, V, or VIII?
Legend of the Legaia nearly ruined me on most rpgs. Forever after that i wanted my appearance to change to reflect the armor/items you would equip just like it did in Legaia.
It took games a few years to start doing that more consistently.
Really any of those are interchangeable with IV as a place to start.
really? seems like a good time to be into jrpgs.
Not him but Iv s easy and straight to the point while keeping the dragon quest formula unlike V. IV is the best entry point, maybe 3 if you can enjoy old games which most people can't.
Only turbo weebs think the plot or cast of Bravely was good. They were shit. So was the dialogue. Just bad writing in general. Shit chibi art style and piss easy to add insult to injury.
Too bad about that sequel.
What was with a lot of PS2 sequels to PS1 games being shit?
>shit chibi art style
the entire game is trying to replicate classic FF and its artstyles you uncultured swine
urushihara is a literal god.
didn't the new langrisser have a new artist?
Not really, especially if you ike turn based. We get some games from time to time but most stuff just can't compete with the old games. Gameplay isn't improving in any way and stories are either same old or too dweb in general. I have a ps3 and the only JRPG that I loved last gen was Nier, and it's a ARPG. Resonancce of fate tried but the story is so fucking dumb.
Resonance of Fate
Langrisser hasn't had Urushihara since the end of the original series with 5.
The new Langrisser was also a steaming pile of shit.
>he plot or cast of Bravely was good
Never said that it was amazing. It does the job. Chibi isn't maazing but whatever. The real charm of BD is the fighting system and the jobs.
What's the charm of SMT IV exactly? The plot is shit, the gameplay is shit because muh smirks, the map is complete fucking shit, the designs are shit too. It has nothing going on for it, absolutely fucking nothing.
even if I like it, this one is definitly not easy to get into
>he play JRPG for the story only
I heard he was going blind, but I have literally nothing to back that statement up.
And yet it's still a steaming pile of shit for turbo weebs only.
No FF was that ugly. Except IX. Both failed at being what they were trying to be.
Sprite art =/= awful super deformed 3D chibis
Gameplay wise it was just FFV with the bravely system added to make the game even easier. Pretty bad having worse gameplay than a 20-yeah-old game you tried to emulate.
Even if the art and gameplay were good, the writing would still be vomit inducing.
I do. Please recommend some good ones.
I still don't know what t think about this game.
I never finished it. The fighting system was amazing at first and then when I got how it worked I realized that it took forever to do anything and the animations were too long ith people flying around the place. The building map system was a fucking grind at times. The plot was nonsensical from what I remember. Even so, it was still enjoyable in a way. The cast was fun, the combat was really good when everything was clicking and the atmosphere and world are prtty cool.
Go play suikoden 2, phantasy star IV and Chrono trigger.
Yeah, I can see where you're coming from and I kinda agree with you. I just didn't explain it properly.
What I meant is that since I was recommending it to someone new, for what I've seen people have a much easier time with P3 than with P2.
Persona 2 is a lot slower if you don't use the right fusion spells (and the animation skips from the PSP version) and the "dungeon crawling" can be longer and more tedious in comparison since you can just leave Tartarus anytime you want in 3. In the long run I think P3 gets REALLY fucking repetitive on the last floors but the story pushes you towards the end more than anything. The story in 2 takes a long time to get interesting too, and that can make a lot of people to quit as well. It's also weird as fuck, while P3's story is much easier to understand.
That can be said for all 3 games on different degrees. I wouldn't say any of them excel at any of those things, but they're good games overall.
I generally do. If I'm going to spend 30+ hours on a game, the least I can ask for is to have a somewhat interesting story outside of just defeat the big bad evil and be the hero.
Pretty sure you're thinking Rustle.
The 2D sprites for old FF weren't even that great. Chrono Trigger's art style was so much better
I only played the first 10 minutes of PS4 since I am an ADHD fuck but from what I could tell it was a future clone of DQ except with shit music and a poor attempt and replicating the shading on anime art of the day
What recent JRPGs is everyone playing? I've been meaning to check out the new Tales game but I don't know what to expect. I'll probably buy the new Star Ocean too
Anyone got some weeaboo wizardry clones I can play on PC? Preferably no emulation involved and no hentai shit.
All these hentai artists are suffering from blindness and hairy palms, I wonder what the cause could be.
>weeaboo wiz clones on steam without porn
SoSC is the closest anyone will get and I am pretty sure you would have played it already if it fit your guide lines
I haven't played it yet but I could always pirate it. I have to say it really does fit my criteria quite well. What are some other games I could also try out?
They game very specifically told me not to pirate it when I booted it up
So what did you do?
>tfw we literally started a new millennium
>tfw 980 years for a new one
Though luck for the dipshits who will have to learn all this shit in their future history books. Lmao
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth
>Radiant Historia is so good XD
>it's such a hidden gem XD
I love this meme
I did like I did with wnirar and paid for it
This game has such a great soundtrack.
How DO people have the patience to do this? You basically have to set through 30+ hours of boring gameplay (if the game isn't particularly good) just for the sake of some usually cookie cutter anime tier plot.
(You)
At last I can finally realize.
Thank you for your insightful opinion
Fuck, there's a version with a music CD? My copy didn't come with one.
First printing only. Radiant Historia was actually pretty rare until it was reprinted.
It's not worth it.
I got the soundtrack edition.
Opened it up, listened to the entire ost.
Then later that day my dad died in a car crash.
Should have gotten the basic edition.
>tfw bought game on first print and nobody talked about it for years
Find somebody that is a Persona 2 fan and ask them
Chrono Trigger's story wasn't its strong point.
Persona 2 fan here, I quite enjoyed the gameplay.
Lavos was pretty interesting actually, and Frog's story was also good.
