I actually know this person and come into contact with them frequently.

Under my own breath, I wonder similar thoughts everytime I see them pass by.

I've come to the conclusion that as an indie developer having a great game just simply isn't enough in order to shift units. The other axis that makes up the total area of your success is distribution strategy (i.e. how you get your product to your users).

For people who can't (or have some moral objection) to buying up tons of ads to acquire users (or if they're unwilling to heavily monetize those installs f2p style) it's a pretty effective strategy to come across having an alternative lifestyle. Creating discussion or controversy is intrinsically a distribution strategy and I'm sure this person realizes the intersection between their bizarre lifestyle and the free press that it generates.

How does this person wake up in the mirror and say they look good? Well, looking at this person up close, I think if they tried to be fashionably plain they would be unremarkable, at least this makes them stand out in a way that solicits some attention.

I'm also an indie developer and it's troubling these individuals get the majority of the press. Talking to them (or just overhearing their discussions) shows a less engineering focused approach to the craft of making games, there are undertones of appropriating the currently martketable sphere of indie games as a vehicle for social change.

Channel for social change? Fine. Who honestly cares though? Are there that many edgelords on Sup Forums who get offended by a vaguely non-cis looking person who's living a dream that they (secretly) wish they'd have of being an indie dev?

There are more productive ways of getting your dreams than sitting on the internet and hateposting someone's life style who happens to be more successful than you.
