What are some examples of bad localization?

What are some examples of bad localization?
I only think of Megaman 8, X4, TMS # FE, Fire Emblem Fates, Castlevania 2, Legend of Dragoon, Tri Force Heroes, and Bubble Bobble as truly bad.

>listing some games where the gameplay itself wasn't impacted

You're either underage, stupid, or just haven't done much research. Not saying that a localization can't be bad just for non-gameplay reasons, but seriously no Suikoden II?

>extra bugs
>script breaking
>music just doesn't play in some areas
>untranslated lines
>one character has his name change spelling for one part of the game for no reason

For a game with a fantastic story, that's just not okay.

There's also that one NISA game where one of the big sidequests just doesn't fucking work due to a bug.

Not really bugged, but Persona 1 on the PS1 has an entire alternate plotline/route removed because they got lazy.

Dragon Quest IV DS removed the Party Chat that the remake added, losing about 80% of the game's dialogue or something insane.

Lufia II SNES has text errors in the menu that become obvious like 2 minutes into the game, game breaking bugs added, certain locations have garbage data for names, and one of the cutscenes is invisible because the area it takes place was corrupted somehow. I don't even KNOW how that happened.

>music just doesn't play in some areas
This only adds to the charm tbqh

Not when its a gigantic fucking battle and the game suddenly mutes itself.

If they added a layer of rock there, it begs the question how R2D2 managed to fit inside.

Once i discovered i go so mad.

>localizers should be able to do whatever the fuck they want so long as they don't change the game's core mechanics
go away, treehouse.

Maybe it's the angle that makes it look so tight. BUT WHY DID THEY ADD ROCKS?

...

>MM8, MMX4

Those games only have silly voice acting, not removed content or censorship you retard.

What did they do?

Bad localization is more than just censorship and removed content. Look at Xenoblade X, that game is known for bad localization because of modified content, shitty renaming, and terrible VA.

But I don't agree with that.

Dragon Quest IV DS removing all that dialogue was fucking stupid. Fire Emblem Awakening adding memes and censoring things was fucking stupid.

That being said, localizations that add game breaking freezes and stuff are worse. While I'm not saying that "oh this game is fine because the other is worse", I do want to point out that there's worse things.

Ideally, neither of these issues should be a problem and I hope they stop being problems.

>"The Japanese version of the game contains an in-game encyclopedia where the player can view various information on the game's characters and technology. It also features anime-style video e-mails with full voiceovers from non-player characters, which can be replayed in an inbox, as well as anime cutscenes."

google told me.

Keio Flying Squadon.

>Japanese scenery and loli
>"I could really use a burger! Oh this is good!"
>She says as she starts to eat some ramen and w/e else
>Sailor moon tier VAs that are so bad they're good

Real fun game.

Fuck that's shitty. I guess they couldn't afford voice actors for those characters and a translator to work on extra information.

Only 36 missions vs 52 of the japanese release.
Entire plotlines and story branches gutted
Less aircrafts but not as critical like 2 or 3 missing.
FMV sequences completely missing.

No Hundred Knight, which can actually fuck up your PS3 beyond recognition?

"What is a man?"

shit i forgot about that one.

Wasn't that the same game that just randomly ejects you from the game, forcing you to save all the fucking time?

youtube.com/watch?v=BAtC1SzWSXg

i still can't believe this is real.

Pretty much any Square or Enix game since the PS1 era. FFVII and Tactics were just hastily done. But as time went on, they started to change and alter stuff. on purpose.

FFXIV makes sense since that dialog takes place in Limsa which is a pirate nation.

>changing japanese name into engrish
>turn dialogue into 'muh american teen' style

WHY

There's an option to switch to the un-Americanized version, IIRC.

The image above is a rogue story quest. Which those characters speak in a way thicker accent than the Limsa residents. For no other reason except they're from an expansion quest.

>that fucking shit tier voice acting and localized script
How can a game that is so good have so many bad things to it?

I like it when I can understand what the fuck someone is saying without saying it out loud.

Maybe keep the more flavorful version optional for the autists that actually want it?

FF7 is filled to the brim with errors but because the fanbase is full of autists who refuse change we haven't gotten an accurate translation that doesn't fuck you over during your first boss fight yet.

>okay okay, we have this musou clone but with more over the top shit
>let's remove half the stages, some playable characters, and break the difficulty selection
>don't bother doing QA on the game, the performance will be fine if we haphazardly remove things
>we also need to say this game is tied to Devil May Cry despite having literally nothing to do with the series so no one calls it a Dynasty Warriors clone

Capcom is beyond retarded for some series.

Konami.

Sonic Adventure

American version also lacks a mission where you attack a space station

Zero Wing

SCORPIO

They kept Zero Gravity for the US release, actually, and to be honest it's not that good a level in any case. It's fun to play once, but there's no replay value.
Removing all those other missions and getting rid of the branching was really shit though. Replacing the plot wasn't a great move either.

oh, my bad but I'm sure that they did remove like half the game

A lot of Neptunia games. They make it very clear that someone else would translate, and then someone like Doerr would come in and shit all over literally every fucking sentence.

MY NAME IS BOLO SANTOSI

Man, I've been kinda wanting to go back and replay these games. How badly have they aged?

SA2 holds up just fine. SA1 looks like an early 3D game, the cutscenes look bad and it's a bit glitchy, but it's still a great game.
Play them with jap voices though.

Not bad at all. They play just as they did in 1998. My personal favourite is sa1 bht sa2 is just as good in its own way.

At least most of those bugs in Suikoden 2 were fixed in the PAL version.

>NISA still isn't bankrupt
