One of my favourites

If you into emulating you can start from Shin Megami Tensei for Super Famicom (never released in US but there are fan translations). If you're a normal person you can start the mainline series with Nocturne for PS2 and move on to IV and so on. You won't be lost if you start with any of those.

The spin-offs like Persona have little to do with the mainline games. All the Persona games have been remade for modern consoles. If you have a Playstation Vita or PSTV you can play all the Persona games in order. Once again you don't have to but I recommend you start with Persona 3 if you want to skip the older ones.P3 and P4 are both on PS2 classics on the Playstation store but they're the vanilla versions.

There's some other series like Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor. DDS and Devil Survivor are worth playing and are for the PS2/DS respectively
