They set the voltage way higher than it needed to be for whatever reason, maybe something to do with their binning process. People have experimented with undervolting and found that you can save around 30W and get better performance to boot

my friend works in microprocessor design. he says the power issues are a clear indication that AMD top brass did not think the clock was high enough, and forced them to increase the clock extremely late in development (basically after everything was already done)

This also means something like a 460 is coming because they just had to throw away like 50% of the chips since they couldnt meet the 480 bclck the executives wanted.

He said AMD employees should be "terrified" after this because it represents the company going under.

In some games that support DirectX 12 it will edge out a 980.

The 480 was always supposed to be a midrange card, but people where hyping it up a couple of tiers. AMD's marketing didn't help either.

That and some of the usual hardware issues with launch hardware such as high heat, limited overclocking abilities and power draw issues.

The only disappointing thing about this card is it's power consumption. AMD said that the Polaris architecture would provide 2.5x power efficiency, but it only ended being 2x, which is anything impressive since they switched from 28nm to 14nm.

I only have a 450W PSU. In theory it sounded like it should be good enough for the 480, but now I'm hearing that it uses more power than they advertised.

The problem is that it draws more power from the PCIE slot then what's allowed. As long as your mobo isn't some discount brand/part it should be okay. Maybe.

It's not damage control. AMD has really strong advantage in DX12. Nvidia does well too but the new threading model "unlocks" Radeon cards' true abilities. Not to mention that current Nvidia cards actually hit an unforseen wall because of this. Their hardware cannot be "unlocked" with the new API and none of the cards can make use of asynchronous shaders.

Bsically, AMD already owns the DX12 era.
