They did focus the format for online play infrastructure. But they also added a service charge which now everyone is going to adopt. Sony already has.

SEGA started to focus on online gaming with the Dreamcast, the Xbox was just the natural evolution of things.
Xbox 360 did however for better or worse create achievements. I personally think it was a good idea even though I rarely go for them.
