A monk punches stuff. A fist mage is like a sword mage, they cast spells on their fists before punching stuff. Fists of fire is the most basic spell.

To be honest, that depends on the setting. There are settings where magic is as natural as water.

mages are the carry's of the D&D world
at low level they're garbage, especially in old editions where cantrips arent a thing, come high level though they can solo entire encounters by themselves with ease

Warlocks in 5e are pretty good at this given they get all their spells back on short rests rather than long which means 1hr breaks inbetween fights is all you need to unload your entire arsenal of spells every time combat comes around.

At that point, denying magic becomes as silly and stupid as denying the air because you can't see it, and it becomes extra stupid to not turn magic into yet another part of the sciences.

Unless the setting has a really good reason why magic can't interact with technology and are intrinsically connected, all signs point to it being stupid.

I've always thought of it as more of the capabilities of technology rivaling the capabilities of magic, not just outright denying magic. From what I've seen, the reasoning is normally because magic is some kind of supernatural/inter-dimensional force that can be "summoned" and utilized, but not everyone can do it so then technology comes on the rise to deal with magic for those who can't use it.
