It doesn't need many subs. Patches are spaced out by 3-4 months so they don't invest a lot in it, it's a paid subscription MMO with a higher than average sub fee and most of the money doesn't even go back to the game, Square uses it for other games mostly.

What bothers me those are clickbait titles/articles.
They stated over 5 million "subscribers" but the truth was only 5 million accounts, not active accounts.
Similar to SONY using their ps4 rentals as sales.
