I had never done it before as I usually go for a Nintendo 64 look with lowpoly but decent textures. It's amazingly quick to work with also.
Yes, this level is just one enclosure but other levels will have many entrances for enemies to come through, some will even have different heights to get to before you can build.
The flying carpets will explode on walls, destroying a good bit of a single panel. If they just pass right past the wall, you'll have to shoot them down. This forces you to keep an eye out, or to focus on a part of the wall so that they'll only pass through a certain zone.
